I don't like Future Trunks and present Gohan (Cell saga, Buu saga, DBS), their only purpose is to be "the cool-angsty teenager hero" just to bring in more young fan. Many fan want them to replace Goku just because they are cooler without even thinking of the importance of Goku for Dragon ball as a whole.
I prefer Goten and present trunks because they are more capable of fulfilling Goku's role than Future Trunks and Gohan.

Did Gohan's character change in Super ? Boo saga Gohan is nothing like that.Guesswhoo wrote:I don't like Future Trunks and present Gohan (Cell saga, Buu saga, DBS), their only purpose is to be "the cool-angsty teenager hero" just to bring in more young fan. Gohan is more on the cool-badass teenager side and Buu saga Gohan fulfill this role (minus the Great-sayaman filler, my 2nd favorite part of Gohan in all DBZ).Soppa Saia People wrote:Did Gohan's character change in Super ?Boo saga Gohan is nothing like that.Guesswhoo wrote:I don't like Future Trunks and present Gohan (Cell saga, Buu saga, DBS), their only purpose is to be "the cool-angsty teenager hero" just to bring in more young fan. Gohan became a caring father and husband in DBS but Toei/Toriyama is changing him again into a cool-badass teenager dad just to hype up Gohan fan. Many fan already think that Gohan will be the man of the tournament, the last man standing, the one to beat Jiren by pulling a transformation out of his ass.

Don't know if this is unpopular but I would like Kid/Teen Gohan to have more screentime after the Cell Games, we just got Movie 9 and nothing more.

You're definitely in the majority on that one. A LOT of people wanted Kid Gohan back. Especially after his appearances as a SSJ2.jeffbr92 wrote:Don't know if this is unpopular but I would like Kid/Teen Gohan to have more screentime after the Cell Games, we just got Movie 9 and nothing more.

Family man Vegeta is incredibly boring. He's making the right choices, but he's become so bland for it. I have no interest in VegeBul, it does nothing for me. I don't like reminders about EoZ because I don't care for the way Z ended. I find myself unable to enjoy the baby Bra scenes where before Super began I was excited about her.
I'm probably one of the few who loved watching Vegeta and Gokû train together and watching Whis teach them. "The Gokû and Vegeta Show" made me happy.
I don't care about the pride troopers, but I do finally care about Caulifla after seeing her in #88.
I'm half heartedly watching Super now. If Gokû were to leave I'd drop the show.

Super did slightly change Gohan, especially in this arc where he says his saiyan blood is making him excited to fight in the tournament. Something he has never acknowledged as a positive before, let alone ever a motivation for him.Soppa Saia People wrote:Did Gohan's character change in Super ? Agreed. Family man Vegeta is very boring. As repetitive as his vain need to just surpass Goku became, his character has become either that: or nothing, and his family life literally makes him do nothing for himself. As it did to Chi Chi, and as it did to Gohan. Even Bardock got the same treatment in Minus. Thats the thing with Dragonball I think holds it back greatly. The characters are never able to just be both, they're just a coin flip depending on filler or fighting circumstances. Its a very dated, and amateur way to give a superficial image of character development.Chuquita wrote:Family man Vegeta is incredibly boring. I also think the Pride Troopers are overhyped for what they're worth as well. It could be me but I'm starting to notice the very stock Shounen Archetypes & dialogue starting to consumer Super. The rehashed Super Sentai parodies that stopped being funny, and the over use of stock "I fight for (generalized) justice" character resolves kind of make me groan. Future Trunks does it now, Toppa does it, Great Saiyaman does it, Gotenks does it, Cabbe Does it... There is no significance to any of it just being the standard of what makes a surface good character sound like a good guy but no real context or characterization to it. Cabbe gets on my nerves the most for it because Vegeta just threatened to blow up Planet Sadal, even though he doesn't know where it is or anything and Cabbe was immediately in the "I will never forgive you" stock hero threat. Hopefully if Caulifla is different enough to be cool or acts similar enough to the old school Saiyan personality, I might relax over this.

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Is that opinion about domesticated Vegeta unpopular? If there's no conflict, there's no story. Don't tell that to shippers, though.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Exactly! They should be capable of being both; and in a better handled series they could. Vegeta was still a layered character when it was just him, Bulma, and Trunks. Now that they have Bra he's just turning into this bland house-husband who reminds me a lot of poorly-written paper-thin male love interests in shoujo manga.SingleFringe&Sparks wrote:Agreed. I'm tired out with "justice" characters. I don't think having the Pride Troopers come right after we had a whole arc about "justice" ala Zamasu was good timing at all. The only fun thing that's come out of it so far that I saw was that fan-made edit where someone spliced the Omni Kings cheering the word "justice" overtop of clips of Future Zamasu and Rosé.
Cabbe never interested me beyond his possibilities as a free ticket to visit Planet Salad and that hasn't happened yet. Caulifla really reminds me of the Uni 7 style saiyans and I'm excited about her now. I want to know more about her gang and her backstory if her personality is what they eluded to in #88.
In the circles I travel on tumblr and twitter almost all I ever see anymore concerning Vegeta is people being overjoyed at how domestic he is; all the "oh what a great dad he's become" and "oh look at all this VegeBul fanservice" and people cheering about Vegeta changing a diaper as though he'd defeated the big bad of an arc; I could count the number of people I know who, like me, are dissatisfied with domesticated, (imo) bland Vegeta on one hand. I feel like earlier Super was better at balancing Vegeta's priorities and better at making him feel like an interesting character. He's becoming a male version of what happened to Videl and just like with Videl it breaks my heart to watch it happen. I don't know why some characters like Videl and now Vegeta just become vanilla post-family, while others get to retain traits that made them interesting (Bulma, Gokû, 18, Krillin),ABED wrote:Is that opinion about domesticated Vegeta unpopular? It doesn't help that for as long as I've been in the fandom, I've found VegeBul the least interesting of the popular canon and non-canon ships. Having it prioritized over both Vegeta's development as a fighter and prioritized over all other ships in Super as of late leaves me frustrated. I was always neutral towards that ship, but it's bothering me now that it's interfering with Vegeta's personality and place in the story. It's like where's his sense of individuality anymore? His sense of self worth? If it's possible for Bulma to still be herself after Bra, why can't Vegeta still be himself?

Maybe it's just a social media thing then?
I actually haven't seen much talk about Vegeta here on Kanzenshuu's forums, but that's mostly because everyone's talking about Gohan and 17 at the moment so I can't gauge this place's popular current opinion on him.

What's keeping you? You already have quite a backlog by now. Are you waiting until it ends? Do you not have the time? In any case, I do recommend you watch it if you can, it's an interesting progression of the series, if nothing else.ABED wrote:Having not seen it, I can't comment on how much Vegeta is still himself.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Gohan's character (As far as the original manga, and DBS anime is concerned) has only been getting better since his debut.
The DBS manga should've stayed in the original summary format (How it did the BoG arc) and should've adapted the RoF arc (despite Toyotaro's earlier RoF movie promo).
DBS should end with the Universal Survival arc.

The main Super thread earlier today was full of Gohan and 17 fans arguing with each other about the two characters. I didn't read too much of it since I'm not interested much in either character, but the posts should still be there.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I agree with 'Family Man Vegeta' being boring, but I also find 'Family Man Everyone' a little boring. Krillin, Gohan. We get it, they have families and they care about them. That's great. But if they don't do anything else, what's the point of even keeping them around? "Wanting to be a good dad" isn't really a compelling character arc for me. Probably because this isn't the kind of series that would use that in any sort of complicated way. They're always going to be Best Dads now they have children, and there's no conflict there.
It was why I wasn't that excited for the last episode of Super, because I thought it was just going to be Gohan yelling about how he needs to protect his family and getting stronger because of that. Luckily, that didn't really happen. Heck, Piccolo kind of deconstructs that whole idea. I hope they keep that up.

I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.
