Characters On Son Goku's Gi?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

How many times do they change through out the series? I'm confused when the character changes via Ginyu saga on..... pictures and such would be helpful!

Let's see, the first one is the Kame one (Turtle, obviously).

The next is Kaio's symbol, which I believe means either "Good Luck" or "Good Wishes / Best Wishes." This could either mean "Good luck in your next life" or "It was a good wish."

And I have no idea what the one on Namek means. Either that or I mixed up Kaio's and the Namek one.

The symbol on his uniform from the 21st Budokai all the way up through the fight with Raditz is the "Kame Symbol". It is representative of the Turtle School and implies that one wearing it is a student of Master Roshi. Goku wears this throughout his tutalage under Roshi and for many years afterwards as a sign of respect towards his master. Both Goku's first and second uniforms bear this symbol. Here are the differences between the two:

First Uniform variant: Orange jumpsuit, Black Kame Symbols with yellow background, black belt, blue wrist bands and shoes. First provided by Master Roshi himself for the 21st and 22nd Budokais. Goku also had one sewn up at a clothing store to be an exact match when his uniform is destroyed in a battle.

Second variation of this uniform: Goku seeks training from Kami after defeating Piccolo Daimao. Goku also ages three years during the training and grows up. Kami creates a new uniform for Goku that is similar to the original variation, but has new additions to enhance Goku's new training methods. Orange shirt and pants, Black Kame symbols on white background, blue belt, blue wristbands that are 5 weight units each, blue boots with yellow edges and red laces that are twenty weight units each, and a blue undershirt that is 50 weight units. (I believe those are the correct amounts, some versions of manga/anime say kilograms, some say pounds depending on translation, so that is why I say weight units.)

Goku trains with North Kaio and recieves a new uniform before returning to fight Nappa and Vegeta. The uniform is nearly identical to Goku's previous one, with only two differences. First is that the symbol on the back is changed to match Nroth Kaio's symbol, while the Kame symbol remains on the front. Second difference is that the fabric is ki blast retardant and would repell smaller, weak ki blasts.

On the way to Namek, Goku dons his own variant of the classic uniform. It has the same colors as the previous version, but has two differences of its own to differentiate it. First is the symbol on the front and back, it is Son Goku's own personal emblem. Second, the orange overshirt is the weighted one on this uniform, and as far as I can tell, the entire weigh down is in that shirt alone.

Finally, there is the generic orange uniform that Goku wears first on the way to fight the Androids, and then in every battle all the way up to the fight with Kid Buu. The differences are as follows: None of it is weighted (to my knowledge), no emblems, a blue waistband instead of a belt, the boots are blue with red edges and yellow laces (which is the opposite of previous versions) and the orange fabric itself seems to be lighter than the previous versions which were seemingly a darker shade of reddish orange.

If you were interested in further information, I believe there is a significance to Goku's Blue uniform as well.

The orange uniform was the symbol of Goku's student status under Roshi, showed everyone he was from the Turtle School, who his team was, but eventually became synonomous with being an elite fighter from earth, as Goku himself states when he refused to wear Saiyan battle armor in favor of the generic orange uniform for the battle against Cell. This was to continue to fight alongside his teammates wearing similar orange uniforms.

The blue uniform is the uniform of Goku's family. Son Gohan had Goku dressed in a blue uniform with a white belt and red wristbands as a boy. Gokue wears a similar uniform at the end of Z, Blue with a white belt. It has gray pants and yellow wristbands. Goku wears a similar uniform in GT, if you wish to include that. Except then it is yellow pants with light red wristbands.

That's about it when it comes to Goku's uniforms. If I can get some pics later to add in I will.

That's the first symbol, kame, which means "turtle," and obviously refers to Kamesennin (亀仙人).

The second symbol is a combination of those two kanji, kai and ou, which mean "realm/world" and "king," respectively. Referring to Kaiou himself (界王), obviously. (I forget the term for this, but combining existing kanji is exactly how new kanji are created. But it's definitely not a real character.)

The third symbol is simply the go from Gokuu (悟空). It refers to "enlightment" or "understanding." Incidentally, the same character is also used as the go in Gohan and Goten's names.

It sounds like you're thinking of 福 fuku, which refers to "good luck" or "good fortune," but it's not used on any of Gokuu's outfits. But it is the symbol you see on his house.
