Toriyama used to do a lot of wide mouth shots in his manga to demonstrate pain, which I really like. Also, no the one in DBZ are not from the same animator.

#93

The character acting in the first half is pretty nice, even though the art is slightly inconsistent. Also, Caulifla's and Cabba's transformations into SSJ is definitely bank.

The second half is actually really solid, though the animation wasn't particularly fantastic, I absolutely adored the exaggerated mouths that were used through out the Cabba vs Kale fight. There were definitely a lot of amazing keyframes in there. The rest of the episode was perfectly okay.

Overall, a solid if a slightly inconsistent first half, with a pretty good second.

There really isn't much to talk about from the NEP, it could be Karasawa, it could also be someone else.

Note: The backgrounds in Universe 6 look flat.

NEP is Nashizawa. Perhaps Karasawa is with him, but I doubt it unfortunately.

looked a bit sloppy this time around for me. Although there are some Cabba vs Kale shots that are pretty good.

Also, the CGI noise maps they use in these blast need to be reworked or something. They're just so jarring to me.
I feel like a flat color with some eccentric trim would look better as a blast.

I rewatched the episode in HD and I'm now never watching it on stream again. Shots that I thought looked pretty rough were mostly just drawn by someone with a style I wasn't familiar with, that coupled with the low quality stream undersold the art. It was still inconsistent and not great but better than I thought.

I think 'homage' is the more appropriate word to use here.

I knew something was up when I saw that fight. I was thinking to myself "This all looks so damn familiar".

I honestly thought this was one of the best looking episodes. The scene with Cabba, Caulifla and Kale honestly was one of my favorites of this arc already.

Here's the full Cabba vs Kale fight, with some of the dialogue removed for your viewing pleasure.
Pretty solid fight scene, though definitely nothing particularly special.

It's an obvious homage, though. It's not as if it were disguised as original work, or even out of place like the U6 tournament homages. Whether or not some personally like it, there's nothing wrong with this, so I sure hope they wouldn't be ashamed.

I don't have a problem with it, but the term the guy used was correct is what I'm saying. An artistic homage would be a little more oblique in using a point of reference, this however is pretty much copy-paste.

A copy-paste would be to literally trace over shots from the original Broly film and use them here in Super. That's not the case though. The storyboard artist was obviously making references to the original Broly film, but I certainly wouldn't call the animation itself "copy-paste" or "shamelessly ripped".

They did a similar thing with Vegeta's Final Flash in the Champa arc back in Episode 36. The storyboarding is just like the original Final Flash scene from DBZ. That doesn't make it a copy-paste though. It's a simple homage to the original scene.

I mean think about it. We all know that Kale is literally just a female Broly and so did the storyboard artist. The artist played around with that idea and homaged the original Broly film through its storyboarding. There's nothing shameless about that.

Very enjoyable episode. As soon as Kale got into the action I was like "Oh, I guess Manabe was on this episode". Surprised that Kitano was nowhere to be seen. Great direction, so really nice character acting and Manabe's fight was very enjoyable. In general Manabe continues to become one of Super's best. I am a little sad to see him before the ToP, but this was an important episode so I get it.

That NEP is gorgeous, are you guys sure this isn't Karasawa?
Image
Sure looks a hole lot like him to me.
It's hard to make out the details of the shot that was used for the preview image because of the blur, but you can make out unique cheek shading that isn't Nashizawa or Shimanuki.
Image
Similar cheek shading is also seen in other parts of the NEP;

If it's not Karasawa, I think we might have a new supervisor. Or Karasawa + someone new I guess.

EDIT: I totally forgot to include the Goku shot I was talking about with the cheek shading. It's there now.

Well then, it depends on the person I guess and how far you're willing to say something is a homage or rip. I consider this a rip, again I don't have a problem with it, Broly is one of the coolest characters in the DB franchise, it's just how I feel.

Next week looks exciting.

I think that Krillin, Piccolo, and Frieza is Karasawa he's seems to always give characters that chiseled look, well not always, but sometimes.

Actually that Krillin looks like that guy from episode 16. Shuichi Iseki. Probably not him though.

- Episode 93-

Good episode.

Kale's fight was nice, but the post-production work in Goku/Freeza scene made that scene stood out the most. Love it so much!
Goku's facial expressions was also a delight to see. So far this arc has my favourite portrayal of Son Goku's character ever.

I also liked the storyboard. A lot of focus on characters faces/eyes.

-NEP-

Can't say I'm disappointed that Karasawa may not appear next week because I didn't get hyped with that preview image. Even though the Krillin's shot reminds me of him.
Hit!! wrote:If you were watching a low quality live stream, you shouldn't give your opinion until you've watched the 1080p full quality version of the episode.
Doesn't need to be a 1080p version, but the point stands and unfortunately I have to agree with this.
It became a norm in this thread some people comment right away after watching a bad stream that the episode looked rough/bad, and then acknowledge it look better than they thought after seeing the episode in good quality.

If each episode had a different thread to talk about its animation, I would suggest to only open the thread when the official stream was out, but since we only have one thread to everything it depends of each one's common sense.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
