I think given how much Toriyama doesn't think much of Yamcha at all, if he had been asked some sort of (bad) gag or joke would have occurred leading him to dropping out at the last second.

I'm pretty sure they talked in the Buu saga and at some point in early Super. In fact Yamcha runs up to Goku when he first comes back in the Buu arc after being dead for 7 years.

It would have been something if Yamcha quietly asked the Old Kai to unlocked his potential off panel shortly after Goku left Bulma's 35 hours ago and his base was increased to around Frieza's natural level (120 million), and then revealed during the tournament that he could use the Kaioken up to x25 so he could punch at Cell Game levels, all without telling the audience as a way to reverse troll us on Yamcha by making him a powerhouse that saves the day in the tournament by pulling out a few key wins.

They definitely did in the Baseball episode. Yamcha's been pretty out of focus outside that.
