Your favorite moment in the show?
Here's mine.

I love the Japanese version!

English just doesn't compare.
I'm seriously wondering how anyone can prefer the English over the Japanese. (For this moment at least)

Re: Your favorite moment in the show?
I think I prefer the English-dub moment...I find the Bruce Faulconer music better than that Japanese Song! Well, it differs from people to people, ofcourse. This is one of the best moments in DBZ, ofcourse, and so we tend to like the version in whihc we first experienced this moment. So I loved this moment when I watched the English dub, but just can't get myself to like the Japanese one.Humpski wrote:Here's mine.

If there's ANY bit that's better in the dub than the original, it can only be this:

I also love this one, in either Japanese or English:

I hated how they added an inner monologue to Gohan in the dub version. It works better with stunned silence.Shenron wrote:In French, the music is the same, except it's the instrumental version.
It's my favorite moment too, I can watch it over and over again, but only in Japanese, I can't stand the English dub.

I don't think the animation lent itself well to an inner monologue such as the one there, either. Seemed more like a stunned empty look.Humpski wrote:I hated how they added an inner monologue to Gohan in the dub version. It's dub policy to add random speech where speech is not present. They gave Integrated #13 a few lines, which were completely stupid and pointless, just because...? As far as moments go, there are only a few in the original first two seasons that I might say I prefer the dub for. As for Gohan there...that is one of the greatest moments in all of the Anime.
The first time Vegeta uses his Final Flash. Epic.

I would have to say when Gokuh finally arrived on the scene in the Saiyan saga and totally owned Nappa, and likewise with Recoome. I just love those now-it's-your-turn moments... I also really liked the reunion before the 23rd TB. It was exciting to see how much everyone had changed, or hadn't.

Even after watching the Japanese version, I still prefer the English one. Gohan seems so empty in the Japanese version, where as he's going through intense inner turmoil. Unless the dialogue changed that much, his lack of desire to fight is fighting a losing battle with his sense of right and wrong. He's struggling to gain control of his emotions, so the monologue helped convey that struggle, leading up to the point of him letting go. Besides, Gohan's *thinking* to himself in the dialogue they added, not talking.Humpski wrote:I hated how they added an inner monologue to Gohan in the dub version. Like I said, I don't know if the previous 5 episodes were changed dramatically from Japanese to dub, so that's how the whole scene plays out to someone who watched the Gohan and Cell fight pre-SSJ2. Maybe the silence is better for other people, I just prefer the dub.
I thought the Japanese music, Ummei no Hi, was perfect. It's a song that perfectly relays hope after the death of a friend. Funi's music was just a repetitive beat. In the Japanese, the song embodies a long awaited release, hope restored due to tragic circumstances.raz1337 wrote:Even after watching the Japanese version, I still prefer the English one. I also find Gohan's silence in the Japanese version more tasteful, as opposed to Funi/Ocean's inner monologue. It's more tasteful with the dead silence with the bird chirping, we don't need words...it was literally a speechless moment. A one, sudden snap. Gohan's english monologue just overcrowds everything, you don't give yourself a thought out analysis on the situation when you snap like that.
Plus you can tell that the Japanese voice actress really gave her all to that scream. It's a scream of pure and utter rage/despair. The English voice actress... I just didn't feel it from her.

I agree that the Japanese version was better without the inner monologue thing, but the bird pissed me off. I would've rather had it with nothing but the music until Gohan screamed. The chirping annoyed me.Humpski wrote:I thought the Japanese music, Ummei no Hi, was perfect. It's a song that perfectly relays hope after the death of a friend. The music in the Funi Final Flash scene is awesome. Faulconer's best work was defintely in the Cell Saga.

One of my favorite moments. Cell's voice is awesome here, and so is the music.

I got tears from watching certain moments like Gohan's SSJ2 transformation, Goku sacrificing himself, and the people of Earth giving their energies for Goku's genki-dama (I think) at the end of the series. That was a long time ago, but it only happened through the Japanese version. The dub was fun early on, but I never got that emotionally involved.
You make it sound like the bird's chirping lasted an eternity and sound more like a screeching sound that the volume was blasted way up on. o_OEx-Dubbie369 wrote:I agree that the Japanese version was better without the inner monologue thing, but the bird pissed me off. As for the inner monologue, FUNi seemed to not notice that the whole scene was merely time slowed down. It was like time slowed down for Gohan and that the bird in the background was a reflection upon #16's request to protect the life of the animals he loved. Time zips right back into where it should be at and Gohan snaps.

The Kamehameha vs Gallic Gun for me. It was freaking cool, and I love the Kaioken.
Vegeta's ape-shit "YOU WON'T ESCAPE MY WRATH" scene would be my next choice... that just never gets old.
