Apologies to keep this so off-topic, but how are they treating him this way? By bringing him back twice? Regardless, it may be a good idea to keep in mind that he is the face of DB villains - out-of-universe, among fans. He's one of the most iconic characters, so it only makes sense for him to be pushed in the series if they want to make more merchandise. If it makes sense in-universe and (more importantly IMO) is executed well, it can be done.sintzu wrote:Now for some reason they're treating him like the face of DB villains.

Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
He was brought back in Fusion Reborn, in GT, and twice in Super so 4 times. If they bring him back to life then maybe he'll just get defeated, go back and train, fight again, do it all over again which will make things even worse.Anime Kitten wrote:

This is the problem, fan service. Super needs to stop relying on it and instead be its own thing.
DB was a story first, merchandise second. Merchandise should never come first or you have the risk of ending up with another batman&robin.
Of course it can be done but wouldn't it be better to see original characters and concepts introduced instead of relying on the same old ones over and over again ?

The same thing's happened with the Alien series with Ridley Scott himself coming back to do new movies (and Prometheus) after even more time has passed, but those aren't nearly as well received as Super seems to be.sintzu wrote:That's what happens when a series tries to continue after being done for 20 years.

Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
I'm feeling Nay. I dislike how it contradicts earlier material.
-Super Dragonballs? How did the Namekians get a shard of it? How did Kami create his own set of dragonballs with no shard? Why is there a thing called the Dragon Clan if the Namekians didn't make the Dragonballs?
-Zuno? Wow someone like him who knows where everything/everyone is, So...why didn't the Supreme Kai ask where Babidi was in space
-28 Species in Universe Seven? Freeza conquers and sells planets, and probably half of his entire army comes from those species. How is he making scratch when there are only 28 species in the entire universe
-There are still dinosaurs on Earth.
-You give Potara Fusion a time limit and a power limit. When Fusion Dance exists.
-Trunks is an amazing fighter. But he's not a prodigy. Especially one that learns new moves via godtube
I could literally forgive everything else. Remaking the first two movies. The really lame fights in the U6 tournament. The last third of the Zamasu arc. But when the official material can't even take notes on their own work, everything is lost.

Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
I can definitely say DBS is the worst anime I've ever seen. Everything is fanservice, everything is lazy, it has a very poor production, not talking only about the animation (movimentation) itself, but in char design, photography, colorizing, OSTs. And it's good to remember while GT could estabilish a lore in just 64 episodes, Super has already 4 sagas, 94 episodes and just gives us more fanservice. Besides it ruined the characters we knew and it presented dozens of incoherences.

You mean how they said that Beerus made them extinct, but they clearly weren't?FoolsGil wrote:-There are still dinosaurs on Earth.
I agree with you about the contradictions. The biggest one so far for me is that Goku's already told Vegeta about Uub, when Vegeta clearly has no idea who he is at the end of Z. Hell, I haven't seen that part in a good long while, but isn't Dende there at the tournament, and he doesn't know about Uub either, when in Super he just told Goku about him?
I know most people like Toriyama's forgetfulness and think it's endearing, and for the original run I totally get that (I love the panel where he forgot what Kaio's hat looked like so he drew him wearing Chaozu's hat!), but with the new material I feel like it's been on overdrive, along with him doing retcons such as shoehorning Beerus into every past event like the destruction of Vegeta, Kaio's planet and the old Kaioshin being sealed in the Z Sword.

Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
I'm saying I knew about that scene in Super, but I was asking if he was at the 28th Tournament at the end of Z (which I looked and found that he was on the wikia of all places). I recall there he doesn't realize who Uub is, even though in Super he just told Goku. I remember him looking at Piccolo in confusion, and Piccolo is smiling because he understands what's going on.Trickster wrote:It's very easy to find hahahaMetalwario64 wrote:I agree with you about the contradictions. Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
Yay, but only once, if you have enough curiosity about Toriyama's vision for a continuation of the series without his idiosyncratic execution. As a Toriyama fan, this'll be a one-time watch for me. It's a frustrating ride that I wouldn't recommend to anyone but curious die-hards, though if you fall into that camp, it's not without its occasional rewards.
The manga gets a less reserved "yay," but it's not must-read material. Consider it an offering of more enjoyable one-offs in the vein of the two recent movies.

Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
It's a yay from me.
The retellings aren't worth your time. However, watch episodes 16, 17 and 18. They're fantastic. After that, just go straight to the Champa arc and watch from there. The Champa arc is great, I loved the Future Trunks arc and the Tournament of Power arc has been pretty good so far.
The show is also worth watching for its downtime episodes. Episodes 42, 43, and pretty much most of the episodes leading up to the Tournament of Power arc are wonderful.
I agree with the previous posts saying that Super would've worked better as movies. I honestly would've preferred a movie version of the Future Trunks arc. That would've been perfect. Though I don't see how the Champa and Tournament of Power arcs would've worked as movies, I'd be curious to see how they would turn out.

Re-read the manga version of the Universe 6 arc in a single sitting. It lays out a pretty practical version of how it could operate within the run-time of a movie, and I think it's actually a more coherent pacing given the material.Super Saiyan Swagger wrote:Though I don't see how the Champa and Tournament of Power arcs would've worked as movies, I'd be curious to see how they would turn out.
Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
Super will be rewatched by fans for years to come. The problem is Super got off to a bad start with pointless movie adaptions and crap animation for the first 30ish episodes.
However after that Super had a huge upswing in quality, and while it still has obvious flaws, it's been enjoyable to watch. One of the other biggest problems is how it handled it's main characters, mainly because it was just the Goku/Vegeta show for a long time and the other main characters just became background material, but it's something they appear to be fixing now. I don't know how consistent this will be, but hopefully it remembers people like to watch the main cast outside of just Goku and Vegeta.
I also think Super will be remembered more fondly when it ends, as this is likely going to be both Toriyama and Mosaka Nozawa's last Dragonball related series. So if you want to watch the last series where you'll hear Goku's original VA, and likely the last one with Toriyama's involvement...this is pretty much the "last hurrah" for the original staff.

Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
Probably a yay? and nay at times, just be ready for some WTF moments because their reactions and how they handle the situation is inconsistent at times, tho if you're a fan of DB fights I recommend watching Ep11-14 then go to U6 arc (by all means skip Goku V Botamo, it was horrible) Black arc was somewhat enjoyable but completely ruined Future Trunks as a character for me, Black and Zamasu on the other hand were amazing. I say if you have the extra time then go for it, the manga is also a lot better (-Goku Black's character)

It's just that I find that having an entire tournament in a feature film would become tiresome to the audience. Kinda like how Man of Steel's third act was nothing but action, which got old really fast.
Re: Super: Yay or Nay?
For me, its Nay so fr, some episodes are great, but overall, Toei is too afraid to get out of Z territory, and even if they have new idea, they have to immediately rehash old elements, seems like GT flop haunts them to this day

Yeah, either the magic is gone, we realize the series or movies were a product of their time, or the writers don't push the story and characters forward. Of all the recent continuations, the only ones I can think of that I've enjoyed were Veronica Mars, Creed and before that Rocky Balboa.Metalwario64 wrote:The same thing's happened with the Alien series with Ridley Scott himself coming back to do new movies (and Prometheus) after even more time has passed, but those aren't nearly as well received as Super seems to be.sintzu wrote:That's what happens when a series tries to continue after being done for 20 years.
