Favorite and least favorite versions of a character
Favorite and least favorite versions of a character
This doesn't necessarily mean "transformations." I'm really intending it more to be chronological.
My pick to start this off: Gohan.
Favorite: Buu saga. He's got the Son naivete, but not as stupid as his father. He's got a kind heart and working brain who is nevertheless occasionally befuddled by the big city and Videl.
Least favorite: Cell saga. Whiny, disagreeable, indecisive and pacifistic. While normally I admire someone for standing by their beliefs, sometimes you just have to fight; even Gandhi admitted non-violent resistance wouldn't have worked against Hitler. Becomes stronger than more likable, "deserving" characters (Piccolo, Mirai Trunks, arguably Vegeta).
Anyone else want to throw their two cents in about what I've said, or talk about someone else?

Trunks & Goten forever
Nice thread. Should I assume we're not counting GT, as everyone sucked, character-wise, in that?
Anyhoo, let's see. Vegetto... Oh, wait.
Well, how about my thoughts on Goku, then?
Favorite - The part in the series at which I like Goku the best would be on Namek, starting with his arrival. He's gained so freakishly much power, and is schooling the Ginyu Force all over, and thus has now truly been shot up from tough-but-nothing-special, low class nobody, to one of the most powerful forces in the entire galaxy. Yet throughout it all, he's just being his normal, happy, challenge-loving self, fighting Ginyu and company as if it were no big deal. And of course, the whole thing climaxes with Goku becoming a Super Saiyan, quite possibly his single most badass moment.
Least Favorite - Goku during the Androids/Cell arc. I know he kinda played second fiddle to just about everyone else during this, but even throughout it all, Goku's character just kinda seemed weak, what with him making all kinds of bad assumptions and decisions.

Vegeta.
Vegeta at his best: Namek and Freeza Saga. He doesn't constantly get his ass kicked all of the time, and manages to be ruthless but still kind of likeable. He's not really a villain, more of an anti-hero. I also like how he helps the Z Fighters but still maintains a strong dislike for them.
Vegeta at his worst: Android and Cell Saga. Gets his ass handed to him severely by 18 and Perfect Cell. Plus, he makes the same damn mistakes he made in the Freeza Saga. There is a thin line between arrogance and stupidity; Vegeta crosses it numerous times in this Saga.

"Remember to believe in magic, or I'll kill you."
Piccolo
Favorite: Saiyans Saga -> Piccolo is a doubtfull character, because he REALLY hates Goku, but he kind of like Gohan. Despite of everything, he is an evil character, but he knows that this is wrong and he 'rebels' with the wills of his 'father', when he finaly finds a friend.
Least Favorite: Boo -> Piccolo playing voleyball...

I like all of the Gohan characters, especially Mystic Gohan. He wasn't nearly as naive and merciful as Goku, which is how it should've been.
Anyway, I'll do mine on Vegeta
Favorite: Android and Imperfect Cell saga. He was such a badass during this saga, what with how he easily disposed of Android 19. Sure, he got the shit beat out of him by Android 18, but then, after he came out of the ROSAT, he was just a badass killing machine who beat the crap out of Cell. Definitely my favorite version of Vegeta. Sure, he made some dumbass decisions, like how Friezafan pointed out, but he was still awesome.
Least Favorite: Buu saga. Even though Majin Vegeta was cool, after he came back, he was just the guy who's sole purpose was to get his ass handed to him. I mean, Kid Buu kicked the living (or in this case non-living) shit out of him twice. That's pretty bad. Plus the fact that he lost one of the major elements of his character - an intense dislike for Goku.

Re: Favorite and least favorite versions of a character
Ah, I strongly disagree with this. Do you think Gohan doesn't deserve his power ? He's been abducted and left alone for 6 months in the desert at only 4 years old, and spent most of his life training, not because he likes it, but because he has to. Vegeta, Goku and even Piccolo like to fight, saving the world is only a bonus.Thanos6 wrote:

Ok, he's gifted, but I don't think you can enter the RoSaT weaker than Freeza, and leave it stronger than you father without some efforts.
Well, speaking of Gohan, my favorite version is the Ultimate one. Not only because he's strong, but he's what I think he should have been at the beginning of the Buu saga : not too much of a badass, but just a little more serious and mature than after the fight against Cell, and still as kind.
And my least favorite version is...Ultimate Gohan too. Why ? He's much stronger than his opponent, but doesn't take him seriously and screws up. Just like against Cell. This guy never learns.
Well, I meant "in terms of likability by the audience." Young Gohan who fought the Saiyans and Freeza was likeable. The Gohan who fought Cell, IMO, was not.Ah, I strongly disagree with this. Do you think Gohan doesn't deserve his power ?
And Mirai Trunks also did not like fighting and went arguably through even more hell. He started out with more potential, but ended up screwed as the least powerful of the four Saiyans (STRONGER than Vegeta, but unable to use it as well) even though at the time he was the most likable, IMO.

That's what I always hated about Gohan when he was stronger than everyone. He turned into an even worse version of Vegeta.Shenron wrote:And my least favorite version is...Ultimate Gohan too. Why ? I don't think Trunks has more potential than Gohan, but he can use it less haphazardly, and his personnality is not as much altered by his power. He started out with more potential, but ended up screwed as the least powerful of the four Saiyans (STRONGER than Vegeta, but unable to use it as well) even though at the time he was the most likable, IMO.
But yeah, Gohan is a bit too whiny during the fight against Cell.
Ehh, I guess it depends on which view you take regarding the fanon re: fathers passing along power to the kid.
I think Mirai's main problem was his lack of training. Mirai Gohan taught him the basics of fighting, but the basics seemed to be about it; he never learned about the whole strength/speed tradeoff; and when he finally had the chance to learn how to really master the Super Saiyan from Vegeta, and learn some more of the advanced techniques as well, the Prince of all Jackasses basically left him to do his own thing, if I'm remembering the RoSaT scenes correctly.
Gohan, meanwhile, got much better training and more thorough training from Goku and Piccolo, especially in the 3 years training and then again in RoSaT.
Your milage may vary, of course.

PICCOLO
At His Best - From the 23rd tournament - the defeat of Cell.
At His Worse - Buu Saga.
Why you say? His whole transition from evil to good happens between that timeline, and even in the Android saga, he shows some of his original side. When Tenshinhan, Piccolo, Vegeta and Trunks are recuperating from their skirmish with #17, and #18, Kuririn asks Piccolo what they should do, and Piccolo turns to him and says something along the lines of he doesn't care, and he's still going to take over the world, so it doesn't matter and flies off. I thought that scene was pretty cool. Anyhow, Piccolo is useless in the Buu saga really, and it seemed like he was suppose to be on the comedic side with Gotenks. He doesn't do anything in that saga...for the love of Kami, there was another tournament, there should have been some more classic fighting scenes going on...FIN.
EDIT
Another example, I just took a look in the "Favorite Deaths" thread, and clicked the link on Super Buu's human extinction attack. Look at how Piccolo cowers before Super Buu. Piccolo doesn't cower before anyone! He wanted to fight Nappa right off the bat, he attacked Turles, Broly, and Frieza even though he knew they were much stronger. He got scared after sensing Cell's power, but still ended up attacking him as well. Sure he got beat by all of them, but it's his courage that makes him cool. He doesn't mind getting beat the hell up, he just wants at least one attempt to kill the fighter before him.

I think that switch in his personality has to do with him fusing with Kami. Lord knows, Kami wasn't exactly the most action-oriented character to begin with... and now his presence taints poor Piccolo's view of things. I agree he doesn't seem quite as badass after the whole affair has gone down and he's had seven years to get used to the old guy sharing a body with him. (Though you've gotta admit, for someone who has to deal with that, he still manages to command some respect. So it's not like he's gone all downhill.Drunken Master wrote:PICCOLO

Now that you're mentioning it, i's true that Mirai Gohan never really trained seriously after the fight against Freeza. No wonder he couldn't train Trunks properly.Gohan, meanwhile, got much better training and more thorough training from Goku and Piccolo, especially in the 3 years training and then again in RoSaT.
Though in the Movie Special, his fighting skills seem to be more than decent !

The 18th post may as well be for 18.
Favorite: Trunks special/future timeline. I love villains, and she's a seriously evil bitch here (I liken her to Hitler's wet dream). Her and 17 make an awesome douchebag duo.
Least: Buu saga. I just liked her design and personality (not so glacial) better earlier on, plus the whole having very little screentime thing.

Anyways...
Vegeta
Favorite: Saiyan-Freeza Saga. Remember when Vegeta employed strategy, like waiting for Zarbon and Dodoria to be alone or playing dead vs. Recoome or stealing the Dragonballs from right under Freeza's nose or forcing a zenkai to power up?
Least favorite: Android-Cell Saga. Remember when Vegeta's strategy turned into RAR I HIT U then RAR I LOST RAR?

Broly
Most Favorite:
Where hes beating everyone ruthlessly and does his awesome laugh everytime. He had some good lines in the first movie and I liked how he mocked the aliens making it look like he was aiming for them but then blew up their planet. In Second Coming, he was stronger and laid the smackdown on the heroes again but I wish it lasted longer.
Least Favorite:
In Bio Broly when he gets covered in the sludge and isn't as fast/strong as before getting beat by water. Made the real Broly look like a disgrace.
