DBZ and France:

Has DBZ been mega popular in France for a long time?
Because I think back when the Butoden games were being released for Snes they only came out in Japan and France if I remember correctly.

When did the series arrive there? Way before North America?

DB has been in France for ages. The French Daizenshuu 7 says it was first broadcast in 1988.

I wonder why France got it and no one else did?

Or am I wrong and other European nations have had it for a while too?

Also Spain and Italy got it pretty early. I believe Italy even before France, because the Italian dub wasn't based on the French one.

To make it short, in the late 70's, some guy had the smart idea to broadcast some japanese series, which were pretty cheap back then. It started with Astro Boy, Jungle Tatei or Captain Harlock, and then came Grendizer, Saint Seiya and... Dragonball.

I'd say that 90% of the animated series which were featured between 1980 and 1995 were Japanese. Maybe 95%.

True, here on Portugal we had our share of Japanese animation, in the late 80's we had Saint Seiya and Captain Tsubasa, and then in the mid 90's we had Sailor Moon, Dragonball, and in the late 90's Rurouni Kenshin, Evangelion and some others.

Here on Portugal? No not really, I don't know about the other European countries, but around here there seems to be just a small comunity (that I know of).

Not as much as in the 90's, but somehow, yes. There is only a small community of real fans too, but the videogames are at the top of the charts, and I've been surprised to see an 16 or 17 guy drawing a Goku in his textbook in the subway. So there's still hope !

I think that anybody who's born after 1975 knows a little about Dragonball, at least the name of the manga. But it's far to be as popular it was 10 years ago.

The first time I ever watched Dragonball it was French dubbed, and I still own all of the movie k7's that came out in France. Not a bad dubbing work actually...in contrast to Portugal's one! God, my country can suck sometimes!

Correction! Thanks to France, in Quebec we have the Dragonball mangas WAY before the rest of North America.

But Yeah,Dragonball was VERY VERY popular in France! I used to read video games magazine from France back in the beginning of 90's and it was a very very very big phenomenon. What make me sad it is that I read many spoilers because of that so Vegeta/Bulma pairing was not a secret at all to me

But don't forget a thing: In Europe (and Quebec) we know anime since the 70's.....So the ¨Japan Mania¨ boum right now in the states is very late!

Well, the States did get some early Japanese animation as well... Mach Go Go Go, Jungle Taitei, Tetsuwan Atom, Uchû Senkan Yamato, Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman...

Well, French companies really didn't mind changing names and such so that they wouldn't sound Japanese anymore either. ^_^;
