Are you excited or overwhelmed with all this Dragon Ball content?

Post by Xeztin » Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:13 pm

Basically, are you overwhelmed or excited? We have all this content for the franchise: Dragon Ball Super anime, Super manga, Heroes, Super Heroes game, Super Heroes manga, Yamcha manga, the movies, Dokkan Battle, Fighterz, all these video games etc... It is indeed a good time to be a Dragon Ball fan but I was wondering if some of you where underwhelmed? As someone who collects official and doujinshi/unofficial things it does get to be a lot sometimes for myself but it is exciting and fun nonetheless even though all of this is going on at once.

I've been a bit overwhelmed trying to balance out a budget of nabbing each Kai: The Final Chapters set as it came out, and the first Super one next month, but other than that, I couldn't be happier. Super, even with it's various issues and misses, is still an enjoyable enough continuation of one of my favorite franchises, so I couldn't be happier to have more of it to check out. Getting one new episode of it a week is a great nostalgic feeling too, taking me back to one of the few things I really look back fondly on from my time in school - even if then it was dubbed episodes, obviously.

The wealth of new official content has made it harder for me to keep track of the couple of fan-made things I was keeping up with before though, like Multiverse, and even harder to get around to checking out other fan-made things I want to experience.

I'd say overwhelmed. For years Dragon Ball was Dragon Ball for 20 years and the only new stuff to have were video games and new releases for the manga and TV series.

Then the 2008 Jump Special came along, and Kai, and new guide books with new information that I still don't know much of, and new movies, new TV series, new manga, Heroes and Xenoverse, new story-lines, new characters, and all of a sudden it's too much to take at once!

It's really only Super, and whatever videogames you buy.

Dragonball Heroes is nothing more than 2-3 minute video clips on youtube, at least to me.

Honestly, for me the new Dragon Ball content is easily more exciting than overwhelming, but I guess people who're use to a franchise with a solid conclusion, and has been that way for a very long time all of this new content could be overwhelming for them. Of course it doesn't help that its such a fast, sudden torrent of new content.

Excited, even though I don't follow everything. I wish there were english of french edition of the DB Super Heroes manga, though.

I am a bit of both, all this new content, I can't be happier, but the problem is, I am not comfortable with having half knowledge, so I keep looking up every last detail to its source and keep trying to process it all...

It gets pretty overwhelming, not everything can be remembered in such a short amount of time even when I keep myself updated with every little detail as it's Leaked..

I don't have to worry about not keeping track of blue rays or figures though, I have just enough cash to get by each month, can't be spending it on this now unless I am really in the mood to punish myself...

It's weird for me. I don't want to keep buying stuff. I'm tired of collecting things. But I guess that's my weird collector's disease because I feel the need to buy everything. Well, not everything, but certainly Kai and Super. It would be nice if Viz lit a fire under their ass for the colored manga too. I just never imagined that I'd be approaching 30, going into a store and buying something that's related to a cartoon. I'm not saying anything is wrong with that -- as I, myself am doing it -- but I really just wanted my closure with the series. I don't want to buy anything physical again with the advent of all of these streaming services that I pay for (for God's sake, I pay for Hulu, Netflix, WWE Network, have HBO, have Showtime, FunimationNow, Apple Music -- I really don't need to buy anything media-related ever again unless it somehow doesn't show up on any of those places and I really love it). And yet, my pocket is about to take a big dip once I actually start buying all of the new stuff.

So from a financial standpoint, I hate it. From the standpoint that I want my closure with the series and just want it to end (like all of the superhero shows that I have on DVD), I hate it too. But as far as being a fan, I'm interested. It's pretty excited. If I were under 20, I'd probably be through the roof.

I'm really excited. Honestly, I've never been more excited with Dragon Ball content since I first started following the show. But to be honest, the only real new content has been Super and, understandably, the videogames.

Heroes is also a V-Jump manga if that counts as well.

Not to mention the card art we collect on the super heroes thread. I love all the content but it is drastically to keep up with such as episode titles and stuff. It's hard to keep up with everything at once and balence doujinshi as well.

I'm impressed with the last 2 movies and Super's manga and can't wait to get more from both but the anime has been disappointing overall.

The Xenoverse games have been really good and FighterZ also looks great so those 2 have breathed new life into the video games and can just get better moving forward. Heroes has been a great place for what ifs.

I love Kai for giving us an accurate English dub and cutting Z's episodes down and so far the new figures and statues have been really good.

The manga's full color version was also a nice addition to the franchise but I wish Ziz would release them faster.

Overall, I think the franchise's modern revival was a successful one.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

It's definitely still exciting! :D Though sometimes it does get a bit overwhelming like recently I hit a lull and wasn't around much on here and that's happened on a few occasion but I can't imagine me still being invested in the series like I am if modern DB didn't get kick started.

I'd be lying if I said I haven't been consistently excited since Battle of Gods' announcement, continuously through today.

I'm not sure that 'overwhelmed' would be a good word, though. I've definitely become much more selective about the content I consider worth spending money on, at least. There's a lot of new content coming out, across several forms of media, and it's growing increasingly difficult financially to keep up with. As such, I've had to decide which of this new content I actually want to own, and which of this new content I'm fine with merely viewing a couple of times, legally and for free, as it comes out.

I am only keeping up with Super and the occasional Video game. So I'm not overwhelmed in the slightest, though what I do keep up with is very fun.

I'm not overwhelmed because I'm only following Super and sometimes the home console games anymore.

All Heroes has to offer me are fun alternate costumes (Gokû's DBH exclusive outfit is so cool!)

I'm done with re-releases of the manga and anime. I'm mostly done with figures (waiting to see more wcf stuff get released). I'm done with guide books for now.
On hiatus.

I'm not overwhelmed, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't kinda just want it to end. I don't want to have to buy all this crap.

In theory, I love that Dragon Ball is continuing on, and that we'll probably have new Dragon Ball stories for as long as the franchise continues to make money. DB is the kind of franchise that this comes naturally to.

But in practice, the Super anime is okay, the manga is good but not great, the games have always been pretty fun, the Heroes manga will probably be okay, the Yamcha manga is a fun diversion...
Nothing is blowing me away, and I have a hard time recommending a lot of the new content to friends.

I was talking to my brother about this recently, actually. He was a big DBZ fan way back, and quite liked GT. I was explaining to him that they're basically retconning GT in Super, and we're both pretty bummed about it; it's a massive slap in the face to the guys who worked hard on GT, and even if we look past that, Super isn't that good anyway. Granted, GT wasn't the best thing on the planet, but it was entertaining, the Evil Dragons arc was great, and it had an incredible finalé. And to put all that aside for something that's just mediocre is pretty disappointing.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

There's really not much to buy as long as you don't care about toys/merch or stuff like that. Super is legally streamed online so you don't even have to buy DVDs, and aside from the occasional videogame, there's what...the extremely short manga that comes out?

I have to buy the manga and Blu-rays, and I still don't own all of the original show. It's a lot to catch up on, especially when I feel obligated to always buy the Blu-rays
