it was carefully planned out by the god of destruction of that universe because he seen how powerful goku was in the exhibition match. he would select a strong fighter to do a suicide ring out, telling the fighter everything he knows about goku to give him the best chance at taking him out. seems reasonable to me. in fact, i found this scene to be very thrilling.

meeeeh, goku, he does love a good fight, he dont care if he have to do hes fights at hes weaker forms, assuming the fights are good. hei s overconfident like nothing else. he almost got a ring out against the ogre. but he went SSB at the last second, luckily for him. i hope he gets more serious from now on. also i hope the fighter remaning fighters are stronger than gokus base form.

It was done for cheap drama and artificial tension. Nothing more and nothing less.

The suspense was immense. I really thought that was it for Goku. Never expected him to transform or anything like that. That green guy looked tough!

This was easily many least favorite part of the episode by far. This scene could've been used to show other fighters in the tournament, we all knew what was going to happen and it was animated soooo ugly when Goku broke the hold.

I agree with the others. It may have garnered a more engaging responce if Goku was actually dragged down into the abyss but had used his opponent's Ki signature to escape at the last second only to appear in the spectator segment of the arena. Some further elaboration on the boundaries of access for the contestants would have been appreciated. Make us question if Goku is technically still eligible or not. Although I could understand why some would take issue with this proposal by comparing it to the filler scene where Goku and Pikkon touched the "ceiling" of the Otherworld Tournament area.
