Hah, because who likes Tenshinhan.
Also, I really hope the pacing of this episode isn't going to apply to the rest of the tournament. The tournament should at the very max be ten episodes long, I can only look at BANK animation for so long.

Yeah whoever is cutting the NEPs this arc are using the worst/least interesting bits and in turn doing a better job for example the recent Freeza vs Assassins episode they missed out all the interesting stuff incl Shida which the last eps he was on the NEP cutter spoiled Shida's involvement.

I didn't mind the bank animation because they were used differently than the original scene for different story beats and most of it felt pretty natural. I understand why people would dislike it because it was pretty excessive though.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Makes sense that this episode was only 1 minute. Their goal was to make us understand that everything is a mess and 80 people beat each other on a small arena. Their idea and execution is correct.

Now for the episodes. I think that the next 2-4 will be around 15-20 in universe minutes. The battle will last mostly 15 episodes (including the winning ceremony and Goku finding a way to save everyone)
Jiren vs Hit will take 1 episode with Vegeta interrupting the fight to challenge Hit.
Hit vs Vegeta will be 1 episode with Vegeta winning.
Gohan and Piccolo combo attack vs Trio the danger will be one episode.
Vegeta vs Kale, Caulifla, and Cabba (Vegeta wins) 1 episode
Vegeta losing to Ribrianne due to stamina issues from his fight with Hit will be 1 episode.
Krillin, 17, 18 triple combo move that will beat the Ribrianne team will last 1 episode.
Tien and Roshi's battle with Thanos and randos will be 1 episode.
Toppo vs Goku with Toppo almost losing and Goku earning his trust only for Jiren to enter the battle. 1 episode
Jiren vs Goku (Goku loses) 1 episode
Jiren vs Vegeta (Vegeta off) 1 episode
Freeza facing Jiren but instead of fighting he jumps off the ring just to fuck with Goku and Beerus while team 7 and 11 lose most of their members 1 episode
Goku vs Jiren (over the limit mode) 1 episode

Rest of the episodes will be dedicated to the wining ceremony and battles between randos

After watching the episode in HD, while I still found it decent, the reusing of animation is certainly waaaayy more noticeable.

Yeah.. The first time i watched the episode, even i noticed the reused animation and i don't tend to notice these things.. I kind of don't like them using OP animation either, but i'll just go with the argument that the OP is just a bunch of scenes taken from episodes, even though i know that's not true.

Honestly, the OP has some really good bits of animation in it, that I would be more surprised that the didn't recycle it for later purposes. This episode has just such a Dragon Ball Z vibe to it with how they repeated frames and recycled animation. There's nothing wrong with it at all, as it's a common practice, especially for long running animated show, to save time for animators. It's just in this episode it was far more blatant than usual how much they re-used cuts of animation from previous episode. I counted about three episodes where cuts of animation were taken from and thrown into this episode and used as BANK animation. And NEP shows they're doing it again and it doesn't look any better, unfortunately.

By far the most annoying thing for me this episode was Basil's Shinning Blast reuse. The same animation was repeated around 5 times in a few minutes. I thought it looked familiar, so I went back his other fights and no surprise, it's the same animation from the fights against Buu and Kuririn. I mean, it doesn't bother to see the same shot from time to time, but this is ridiculous.

At least part of his fight with butterfly girl was new, and great.

I'm very happy that they are using stuff from the OP. Being grown with the italian opening, which basically only showed stuff from the show I'm used to it and I love how the OP stays true to what happens in the show.

I agree for example the green energy thing, for one it was a different colour the shapes were different and the guy shooting it was from a different angle to Buu.

And yeah If someone just watched this episode without the rest of arc there is no way they'll be able to tell what was Bank. When watching the first time there I didn't spot as much as there was, so they did their job. Narratively too there wasn't much to the episode to warrant the effort so using bank like this was smart.

I mean, defend it all you want, but you can't come out here and tell us it's looking promising when the NEP is composed 95% of recycled shots.

Even if NEP are not representatives of full episodes, when you get 5 different scenes and all 5 are recycled, you might as well believe it's not a coincidence and they're just recycling as much as they can.

That's especially disappointing as we've been waiting since February for this tournament to start, after coming from 10 weeks of fillers. They outsourced most of the episodes since 77. I don't really feel stupid for having high expectations out of this tournament, I've waited way too long to see this amount of bank animation.
I really hope that at least starting from episode 99 we will get some great action and that bank animation from older episodes will be gone.

Guys, come on now. This is a big tournament with way too many characters and Super is Super with schedule problems. What did you expect exactly? I think it's a smart move to use resued animation, especially on the first episode when the fighting is not the most intense, they managed to blend the reused animation pretty well, and there are some new animation too and it overall looked JUST FINE. It was intense, the repeated frames were good, the art was pretty good most of the time and I liked the effects other than those zoom out explosions in the background, but honestly it was still fine because it's supposed to be in the background to show that there is a lot going on and the eye is not focused on those little effects that much.

I'm amazed that people are calling this episode garbage or episode 33 level. It was well executed in my opinion and the episode itself was epic, some comments in this thread make me a little upset with that lack of appreciation.

Someone on Twitter was calling Shin Youngsoon a liar who had promised good stuff for the tournament and the guy was swearing too, very rude and uncalled for. This is not the animator's fault, it seems to be a decision by directors. You guys remember earlier Ajay posted a tweet by one of the animator's who was saying that there were problems with the time scheduling of the tournament? This is it I think, he was right, the directors in charge are trying to save this tournament animation from collapsing by using ridiculous amount of Bank animation for the beginner episodes, it's like one of those DBZ episodes where the characters just stare each other for long periods to stretch episodes. I myself am annoyed by the amount of noticeable banks but it will probably be more stable after most of the characters are kicked out of the arena, when there are moments for important characters.
Feel free to correct me if I say something wrong.

They really need to hire some people in this thread to animate this arc.

That's not what was said, from what Ajay said it sounded like he was basically saying he didn't expect work to get tough on the tournament so quickly, and that was like 6 or 7 weeks ago.
With the big gap between Kitano's episodes and Tu's comment I have to wonder if the Toei half of the episode was finished 2 or so weeks ago. That would certainly help explain why the art was as strong as it was.

Tu said he was getting good vibes from Nagamine and we should raise our expectations and Shin said on Twitter a few hours ago that he knows that at least a few new people are coming to the show in the tournament.
I have no doubt in my mind that the reuse of animation is a tactic by Nagamine to help push the production forward, to give animators more time on the early episodes without hurting later ones and to potentially buy time until more animators show up. It's not to everyone's liking, I get that, but hopefully the results will speak for themselves in a few weeks.

Huh, OK. I can't remember what exactly the tweet was but Ajay seemed worried at the time about it. Let's hope Nagamine has something under his sleeve for the climax.
Also, since the NEP is mostly bank, I can't tell who's the supervisor, do you have any idea?

Shimanuki. Interestingly a lot of the bank in the NEP is from episodes of his as well, wonder if that's a coincidence.

It was probably done on purpose to have a consistent look throughout the episode.

This is horrible. I have seen all these people continuously spamming Shin Youngsoon with questions like "tell us about the schedule" and then getting mad when the guy doesn't give straight up answers..... I don't understand their mindset...Either they are idiots that think that Shin Youngsoon is like an inside guy or something (like they found someone that reveals secrets via social media...) instead of an animator or they are clueless and don't understand that companies don't allow their employees to talk about stuff like schedule or internal organization of the production... They don't get that animators are people, who work for a company and nothing more. They are in no position of revealing secrets.

Also insulting?? Who is that guy?
When did Shin Youngsoon hype anyone?
I remember posting a comment, where he was saying that he had a bad feeling and that there were serious issues. Yes later he said that he was getting good vibes from Nagamine but he never retracted that the production was facing issues. Maybe after seen all this chaos, Nagamine decided instead of going "full original animation", to initiate bank animation processes early, to secure that the good stuff in the middle/end will look good instead of mediocre. The NEP means nothing. Last week's NEP had cheap explosions, which were fixed for the episode's broadcast. This people work like crazy all the time.
