I totally agree, but on the other hand, I've never been overly fond of Schemmel's voice anyway. I like Goku's original voice, it's more "goku", even if it's done by an older woman. Worse, I've always hated Kyle Herbert for adult Gohan. That voice always creeped me out.Vekurotto wrote:You know what Schemmel should have done? Played Goku like how he did in the 23rd Budokai. What do you like/dislike about the Season box sets?

yeah, why stop there? I want a more ;cinematic' experience, and since cinematic means widescreen, why not just make it a 2.35:1 release? Who cares so long as I can sorta make things out!jjgp1112 wrote:I have one thing to say: Screw 20% of meaningless footage being cropped out. Also all I ever eat for dinner is tomato sauce! Who cares if it's the same thing over and over again and not nutritionally beneficial, it's tomato sauce!!!!
Now I have to go and buy some HK boots because WHO CARES ABOUT VIDEO QUALITY ANYWAY.

Personally, I'm way more bothered by the absolutely horrible subtitles in the HK-bootlegs than the video quality, but you have a point there. The 20% of lost footage does indeed matter. Besides, in order to get the colors look good, one would really have to modify the settings for EVERY SINGLE SHOT, as some of the scenes already have pretty nice colors on the Season sets, while others look downright awful. Which is why I'd much rather get the old single-DVDs... if I can find them at an affordable price.ETC123 wrote:Now I have to go and buy some HK boots because WHO CARES ABOUT VIDEO QUALITY ANYWAY.
Just picked up my first season set - pretty pumped about it. One thing I'm unsure of though.. In the setup menu, it says that the Japanese audio is in 5.1 surround... But it doesn't say anything about the US audio being 5.1 surround. It just says "US Broadcast". So does anyone know if the US audio is also 5.1 surround, or is it just basic 2.0 sound?
The old single disc releases did have a 5.1 mix, along with a 2-channel version. I don't know why they opted to remove that 5.1 mix from the season sets. I really don't care about the 5.1 English dub, nor do I care about the season sets, just sharing what I know. Maybe you can try and petition FUNi to putting them back on the DVD's, though I highly doubt they'll care.

Well, it's a mixed bag. All of the Ultimate Uncut Special Edition discs had the English BGM remixed into 5.1 surround, but aside from that the rest of the series (from Ginyu Assault to Kid Buu - A New Beginning was presented in 2.0 only. Several of the DBZ movies contain 5.1 English BGM also (such as the FUNi re-release of Dead Zone), but their use of that feature is less than consistent.Vegetasan wrote:What the eff??? Didn't they have a 5.1 mix for the old single disc releases? Why wouldn't that trend continue for the new releases?
Or have they never mixed the US audio in 5.1???
With a 5.1 mix and its inclusion as an option for the dub track (the latter a longtime request of many fans), it's clear that FUNi chose to give special attention to the Japanese BGM this time to market it as one of the Season Sets' big selling points.

Hmmm... That's a little disappointing I must say.. I was under the impression that the US track was going to be remixed in 5.1... Not sure where I read that. But, in any case, beggers can't be choosers I suppose. I'm just glad to have Faulconer's music retained for these season sets, even if it's only included with the basic 2.0... I love that man's work.

I believe it was quoted at one time or another, possibly incorrectly, that Faulconer himself said that his music was going to be remixed for these releases. Whether or not this misinformation came directly from him, the rumor of it is probably from where you remember hearing this-- it was fairly big in its time.

It's Hebert! HEBERT!
And it's pronounced "A-bear". ._.
Eh, don't hate on him. You may not like how he voiced Gohan, but it's not like you know him as a person, at least not well enough to pass that kind of judgment. :/
Well, it's nice to see that the more, uhm, choleric people on this thread have calmed down/stopped posting for the most part. I'd contribute what I like and dislike about the season set I have, but then again every complaint and good attribute I can think of for it has been mentioned already. I will say that the way the footage was remastered is by far the worst thing about these sets in my opinion, though.
... Aaaaand I'll leave it at that. ._.
EDIT: You know, I've just noticed that the four of us have been necro-posting... >____>;
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

I'm curious... One of the major selling points for these sets is the "revised dialogue", which I must say I have enjoyed immensely in scenes such as Vegeta screaming "See you in Hell, Recoome!!"...
So I was wondering, did Funimation re-write the scripts for only season one and two, or did they go back and re-write the entire series? I find that unlikely... since that would involve bringing back all of the voice actors from the androids saga, cell caga, buu saga, etc.... but that would be soooo awesome if they did.
If they didn't re-dub the rest of the series, that's gonna suck because we'll have two seasons of pretty decent dialogue.. And then with season three onwards the quality of the dialogue will be noticeably decreased due to the kid-friendly policy they had when the series was originally dubbed.

I think that by the time Season 3 comes out we'd know if they're dubbing more than just the first two boxsets. Because, the last few episodes of season 2 had the same dialogue as the original release except that they redubbed, Vegeta, Ginyu and the Narrator.
Personally I'd kill for a dub like season 1. I thought it was pretty decent, even thought I don't watch the dub, but we'd just have to wait.

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Insofar... you have Season 1 which was re-dubbed from it's Ultimate Uncut dub in very minor ways. For example, FUNimation went out of it's own way to make sure things got mispronounced when before they were just fine.
Season 2's dialouge is a half-assed re-dubbing because probably not everyone was available for do everything over again.
I think Season 3 and beyond will be like Season 2 or worse.

I've once again flip-flopped on these things. It's nice that DBZ is avaible consistantly for a cheap price, but I just can't get over that they only had three Vegeta Saga II volumes left and they stopped it. If they had finished Vegeta Saga II, Funimation would have the whole series out in the same format. I really would have liked it better if they re-released their saga box sets rather than starting the season sets.
The cropping really bothers me as well; so does the little bugs I've heard about. I just thought I'd get my definitive opinion out there. I haven't bought any of the seasons yet and I won't until later this year after trying my luck at getting the Namek-Kid Buu episodes that I don't have on Funimation's previously released DVD format.
