So the tournament is already too Goku-centered, why bring the older cast back?

Discussion specifically regarding the "Dragon Ball Super" TV series premiering July 2015 in Japan, including individual threads for each episode.

Goku was the "main character" in DBZ and he sat out that series for large portions of time and did absolutely nothing for like 50-60% of it's total episodes.

Yes because Toriyama become overly obsessed with the plot device keeping Goku out of the main plot to build up tension. For all the good it doe the other characters for screen time, what it really amounts to is turning large chunks of the series into "lets wait for Goku". Rather then have him grow and progress against a current threat, like he did in the DB era, GT and Super, he is taken out of the story then dropped back in to save the day. This serves to disconnect from the very story he's part of and worse, makes all the hard work the rest of the characters put in look like a waste of time.

Basically the situation is the reverse of what you describe. Goku is not taken out of the story to give the other characters time to shine, they did well enough with him around before, he's taken out of the story to artificially build tension which only serves to disconnect him from his role in plot, which for the reasons I've pointed out hurt the story and other characters rather then helps. Infact its stuff like that that added to the insane power creep that has plagued this series since the Frieza arc.

Sorry but NO, complaining about Goku's more active involvement in a series were his is the primary protagonist is the single most petty complaint I ever heard in my life. Especially when we have just had 19 odd episodes dedicated to almost every individual member of the team, Goku himself dose nothing to outshine his team mates aside from breaking the grip of a guy who was trying to ring them both out and we are in the very first episode of the tournament. Thats actually the single most hilariousness thing about this critic.

Episode 99 seems to be focusing on the others so that says something

Actually, we have seen on at least occasion the roles being reversed with Goku acting as the proverbial damsel in distress who is awaiting for some gallant knight to rescue him. In this exact situation, though, it's Goku being relieved of his torture session courtesy of Oozaru Vegeta by Gohan and Krillin. No one can say that the the Saiyan arc Vegeta fight wasn't a team effort because everyone contributed in a meaningfully tangible way which made a difference all throughout. What separates that occasion from, say, Vegeta momentarily distracting Cell for Gohan is that the main fighting force of the time, Goku, was pretty much down for the count. The second half of that fight was committed to everyone still alive besides Goku doing everything they can to stay alive while improvising ways to chip away at Vegeta's seemingly unstoppable might. It's true that Goku helped steer this segment fight along with incidents like bequeathing Krillin with the Spirit Bomb and directing Oozaru Gohan's attention towards Vegeta, but all of that was strictly tactical in nature.

You don't see such levels of proactivtiy from the subsidiary characters in overwhelming an antagonist except for Zamasu who was brought to his knees and executed by Future Trunks.

Vegeta was responsible for taking out half of Universe 9 along with Goku, and Freeza was even responsible for an elimination. The NEP looks like it will focus on Krillin and 18. It seems to me that every member will get their moment in this arc, whether good or bad.

The main character is centered? in his own show? that is clearly about him because he started all of this BS? and all of this based from just 2 eps in the current arc? BLASPHEMY! get Goku out of here! main characters shouldnt get the spotlight!

The OP is wrong, but so are you, and your sarcasm is misplaced. This tournament is THE opportunity to make some episodes centering on other characters entirely (which it totally is going to do, by the way).

The sarcasm was meant to be cringy, and why are you making it sound like I'm implying other characters shouldnt get a focus?

You're the one who implied complaining about the "main character getting focus" is wrong. Well in this case it's quite justified, as the team consists of 10 people, so there can hardly be a better opportunity to showcase them all.

That such complaints are basically hysteria is another matter - other fighters are coming in the following weeks, so yeah.

Thats the only thing I implied with my comment, beats me how you jumped to the conclusion of me making it seem like other characters shouldnt get a focus, unless you assume that a main character getting a focus means other characters wouldnt get one.

Yeah, only I didn't, you're the one making assumptions now  I just called you out on making fun of something that is actually a legitimate concern (however misplaced).

You outright called me out that I was wrong because the tournament is THE opportunity for other characters as well, thats the same as telling me I was implying that other characters shouldnt get a focus. I'm not making fun of anything (you're making it sound like I'm such an evil bastard   ) Except its not a concern, Goku getting center episodes here and there is a given, he's the MC for Gods sake, other characters getting it would just be a bonus.

No, that's not the same. You sarcastically made fun of a dude just because he complained about Goku getting as much spotlight as he has. I said his complaints were unfounded (because next eps are going to deal with the side cast), but he had every right to feel the way he did. Whether or not Goku is the main character is irrelevant, since it's an artbitrary designation. Just take Naruto for example, lots of supporting and secondary characters got more than a fair share of spotlight in that manga, and I never saw anyone complain "but y no more Naruto, he the main character ffs!!!!"

I don't think it would be a "bonus", it would in fact be a requirement. Unless you want another GT.

I totally agree with you. So far the tournament has been too Goku-centered with Vegeta kicking in as well.
Obviously, your question is pertinent. Why bring the older cast back if they aren't doing anything?
Well, i think that they only wanted to trick everyone into thinking that this would be an arc with diversity and bring all the fans of each character to the show, but we already seen that it is total bullshit. Currently, i'm only watching super, in the hope that Hitto and Frieza can be relevant in the tournament, but, honestly my hopes are very low at the moment.

He never saw Naruto, One Piece or Saint Seiya and obviously, he wants another GT failure.

I'm not a Goku fan but he IS the main character, and as the main character of the show he is bound to get the centre stage over and over again, the only character who has ever managed to surpass him in that regard was in fact his son Gohan.
I can see Gohan once again becoming the star of the tournament saga, great for the Gohan fans around.
They will save him for last, that's for sure.
Vegeta will have some moments in the tournament only to be surpassed again by Goku and Gohan (or the other Saiyans or the teletubbie lady for gods sake :problem: )
Krillin will be the underdog and will have some awesome fights, but will get beaten eventually.
17 will be the surprise of the tournament.
18 will put up a good fight
Freeza is the big unknown

And the others?....well, they helped.

I'm not making fun of anything or anyone but sure whatever floats your bubble.
Goku being the main character is relevant and him literally starting this whole mess grants him the center stage, its others getting a focus thats the bonus, and I dont see the need to use the Naruto one since Naruto still gets arguably the best scenes and roles in there (yes, better than Sasuke, and I heard a lot of people complain that it lacked Naruto when there was too much Sasuke in it), its weird complaining about the main character getting the center stage when he's the MAIN character.

Its a bonus, the term MAINCHARACTER is there for a reason.

Yeah, and not everyone likes Dragon Ball for the main character specifically. Nor does the main character have to appeal to everyone. Also, Goku is not a titular character, so focus can be taken off him with impunity, unlike Naruto or say, Harry Potter (btw I know no person who would say that Harry Potter is their favorite Harry Potter character).

Also, Goku was used very sparingly throughout the entirety of Z. No one said his role couldn't be shifted to a more background one if the writers insisted on it.

Just because he is the main character doesn't mean he needs to be in every episode and the show is called Dragon Ball not Goku series.

I don't know in what world you are living, but, the bald midget is getting destroyed very soon and there is no way in hell, ultimate Gohan can beat Hitto.

Jeez the tournament just started. Plus he's the main character and reason the tournament is happening. Shouldn't he get the most focus. :p
