Do you find it weird when people say Saiyan as Saiya-jin?

I only find hearing Saiya-jin weird when it's pronounced slowly like the person is focusing hard on saying it correctly. If it's slower than their normal speech speed then it sounds off to me. As for myself, I'm an odd one. I perfer to write Saiya-jin (largely because it makes the SSJ abreviation make more sense and I refuse to use "SS") but I still pronounce it Say-in because of my extensive exposure to the dub and the video games.

Out loud I tend to say Saiyan but when typing I tend to say Saiya-Jin.

What confuses me is why people who say Saiyan rather than Saiya-Jin still shorten Super Saiyan as SSJ when the J stands for the Jin part of the name. If you're going to shorten Saiyan rather than Saiya-Jin why include the letter you don't use in the full word.

As for hearing the word, I've never felt weird hearing it.

Let's see. Since I've mainly heard "saiyan" being that I've had most exposure to the dub, that's what I typically use. When I first found Fanfiction on the web, though, I noticed a lot of authors were using saiya-jin, aditsu, Etc and to avoid looking like an ignorant dubby I used a lot of the more Japanese-sounding terms in some of the first stuff I put online (Kulilin with 'l's... but I think I still used "Master Roshi"...). Then I realized how unnatural it sounded to be calling Raditz Raditsu an how I'd never even heard Saiyajin aloud, so eventually I wound up sticking to the dub names in most cases (as for the H-man, I guess I go back and forth, but lately I've been convinced that Mr. Satan is the correct way, what with now having a few uncut Buu-saga episodes... sometimes Her'cule still sounds cool. I think I've avoided calling him by name in my "I shouldwork on it as soon as I finish my homework" audio fic-thing...).
Lezee, I attempted to record a fandub of Toyble's DBAF, and I tried using the Cy-yan pronunciation and such. While it's correct, it just felt unnatural simply because I never use that.

But when I hear Saiya-jin from someone else? Nah, I hardly notice the difference anymore. I tend to notice Tenshinhan Vs Ti'en and Chaozu/Chiaotzu more... and neither of those bothers me.
Now, Vegerot, on the other hand...

Well I think that it might be that it sounds like one is talking about nazis when they say "SS".

Well, most places that abreviate it use ssj, while you're more likely to find people that say it aloud as saiyan. So SSJ stuck as the abreviation, and it stayed divided for the full term?
Or maybe I'm making stuff up. But yeah... I don't know how many places I can recall ever hearing ss as a shortened form of super saiyan.

I've gotten used to using and saying "Saiyan" but pronouncing it correctly. Ie, not how it is in the dub.

This is probably because I've gotten so used to Steve's subtitles as my frame of reference for everything.

Though sometimes in the past, before my mind settled on one pronunciation, I would often see "Saiyan" and read it as "Saiyajin". Weird, huh? Anyway, safe to say I have absolutely no quarrel with hearing Saiyajin spoken aloud. Afterall, it's what's said in the show.

Actually, something else that is weird is the fact that my dad, who is someone that's only seen a handful of dub episodes and nothing more, pronounces it "Sigh yan." But I think it's weird in a good way.

But as an addition to my last post, even though I prefer to translate it as "Saiyan" with the Japanese pronunciation intended, I still use "Saiya-jin" in both vocal and written conversations.

Saiya-jin though, is a title is it not? Jin is the word for "people" or a "group of people" I think. So really if it weren't for the Japanese need to add a title onto the name of the race, they'd probably be calling them Saiyan's as well wouldn't they?

I mean, if we translated Saiya-jin literally we'd be calling them Saiya-people.

I don't even know what I'm trying to say anymore...

Eh, I find it weird when people use FUNi dub terms

I don't watch the American dub, I don't discuss the series in person with people who're more familiar with that dub than the original, so I'm really unfamiliar with all these weird, wrong names and pronounciations.
I remember listening to one of the podcasts and someone was pronouncing "Videl" in some weird, wrong way that I assume is the how the FUNi dub says it, and had to listen to that passage three times before I understood what he was saying.

Well, English is about the least logical language in the world, which is of course why it's risen to become the most commonly used.

But the point still stands. "Say-in" has no root in proper English pronunciation -or- the original Japanese.

For what it's worth, the Daizenshuu use "Saiyan."

They also use "Nameccians" and "Namekku Planet."

I'm one of the weird types of people who pronounces it as Super Saiyan, but abbreviates it as SSJ. It's just seems more "correct".
