It's because the the financial year ends in march, so it's the 1st quarter of the financial year that ends in March 31 of 2014.Kishido wrote:BTW stupid question...ArchedThunder wrote:Dragon Ball's growth is insane. Q1 of Fiscal Year 2018 results.

So is this just a forecast for 2018 or is the first quartal 2018 starting from April 1?Dai-Saiyajin wrote:It's because the the financial year ends in march, so it's the 1st quarter of the financial year that ends in March 31 of 2014.Kishido wrote:BTW stupid question...ArchedThunder wrote:Dragon Ball's growth is insane. These are not ratings figures...Kishido wrote:But they said that DBS will be canceled cuz of shit ratingsArchedThunder wrote:Dragon Ball's growth is insane. Q1 of Fiscal Year 2018 results.
We still don't know the exact reason why they opened up their streaming and licensing to pretty much every service known to man. One of two things could have happened, 1) Super over performed and they wanted to capitalize on various revenue streams or Super underperformed in traditional channels and they needed to capitalize on various revenue streams.
To explain this better, keeping the license to themselves would mean all the dollars go to them. Licensing out means they get less dollars as they share it but more exposure. Think of it like Game of Thrones, it's exclusive to HBO because they produce it and get all the money for it. They could license it out to Netflix and get a smaller amount of they wanted to which is good for shows with ok popularity. A good example being Disney on Netflix. Their A+ movies such as the Lion King, Cinderella, etc. aren't in Netflix because they are so popular and in demand that they can be the direct seller and get all the dollars direct. One the flip side you can get all the Disney "flops" like Atlantis and every single LILO and Stitch movie ever made. Anyway, as I've said before until we see their actual ratings projections for Super we will never know if it's under or over performing, but we do know it's going fine and giving great financial success to the Dragonball franchise. Especially the licensing.

Lol I remember someone was arguing a few months ago that Super was actually damaging the Dragon Ball name... Bet they feel foolish nowArchedThunder wrote:Dragon Ball's growth is insane. Q1 of Fiscal Year 2018 results.

More and more irrefutable evidence keeps pilling up that shows Super is an overwhelming success.
Not surprised by the domestic figures, Super seems like it is plastered all over Japan!

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
I'm not sure how many times I have to say this but these are the licensing numbers. The top film number is more indicative of actual performance as those are direct dollars, it's also not coincidence the film ranking line up with the tv rankings as it's more of a direct measure of popularity.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:Lol I remember someone was arguing a few months ago that Super was actually damaging the Dragon Ball name... I don't think you know what you're talking about. Shows like Dragon Ball and One Piece don't make money off of how well they do in TV ratings and "Overseas Film" just tells us how well that franchise is doing in theatrical and home releases outside of Japan, which is also not the most important part. Licensing is the #1 money maker, the numbers listed are the money TOEI themselves are making off of merchandise that companies like Bandai make, not the total amount the IP is making in licensed products. Anime studios don't make a whole lot of money, but DB is making a tidy profit for Toei and Bandai is getting the most money out of Dragon Ball and it's their number 2 money maker, right behind Gundam.TheMikado wrote:

Dragon Ball is doing amazingly right now and Super is a big part of that.

They produce the show for the express purpose of licensing it to distribution channnels. Bandai possible also gets a cut as a sponsor, it would be based on what they negotiated in contracts. The point is the distribution channels would include television and streaming services which is the licensing. A distributor is only going to get a license for a product if they think it will be advantageous to attract viewers, if it's public tv it will be supplemented through advertisers who the distributions and producers of the show estimate what they think the audience numbers should be and sell advertising space based on that. Streaming will obviously be different based on the model. The point is licensing from Toei will be based on the number of eyes the distributors think it will hit. I'm not sure what you're talking about or trying to say. The point I was making is that they have licensed it out to large number of services but we have no idea what their projections were. It's more advantageous to license to a small number for large sums and then license it to many at smaller sums later if possible and as demand decreases. You could argue licensing it to many for large sums would be best but that devalues and splits your audience and naturally decreases the audience size of your distribution channels which puts you in a bad spot and if they pay a large certain amount many distributors will request or require some exclusivity contractually. Anyway the point is we have no idea what their projections or business model is at this point to make a judgement as to whether it's a wild success for Toei or its underperforming. That doesn't mean it won't make money I just think making claims like it being a wild success based off a chart are kinda off.
