Your max pay per Dragonbox?
Your max pay per Dragonbox?
I'm considering this HUGE auction with all 5 Dragonboxes... However, it is at 350 000 Yen (average 600 USD per box) , is it worth it?
What would your max pay be?

That's not too bad, assuming all the boxes are in excellent shape with all the extras. I think I paid about $3000 for all 5 boxes brand new (preorders). It's all subjective though, what are they worth to you?sangofe wrote:I'm considering this HUGE auction with all 5 Dragonboxes... Eh, I'm sure they'll hop on the HD bandwagon eventually, but I wouldn't bet on it for quite awhile. I wouldn't be surprised if such a release didn't happen until 2012 or so, if at all.sangofe wrote:Well, I got my friend to bid on it... That's more than a fair price in my opinion! I'd say go for it, Just think, they need to finish the Dragonball singles, then do GT, possibly followed by individual releases of the movies and specials. Then they'll have a few years of downtime to see who won the HD format war and THEN maybe release an HD version. I think MVXV is veru accurate in his prediction for an HD release.
Since sangofe brought the HD issue, how do you guys think it will play out? Will they do it like FUNimation did it and crop the picture to 16:9? I'm assuming that is the only way to do it, unless maybe pillar-box the footage?
I would think [and hope] that Toei would have that little thing FUNimation lacks: "Common sense". Besides, there are some 4:3 Blu-rays and HD-DVDs out there. I'm not sure what they use, but I'd be willing to bet it's pillarboxing.SatoSky wrote:Since sangofe brought the HD issue, how do you guys think it will play out? I'm 100% positive that Toei will preserve the original aspect ratio via pillarboxing. Unlike FUNimation, Toei knows the way that the footage was "intended to be seen" because...well, they made it.SatoSky wrote:Since sangofe brought the HD issue, how do you guys think it will play out? If they do however mess with the OAR, they'll get it both barrels from me (and the Japanese audience ever moreso, since they're fanatical about their anime).

Edit: From a quick look, it appears most HD releases of 4:3 material are being preserved via pillarboxing, and the ones that aren't are being decried as being by companies with little common sense to begin with (and typically they're from pre-existing masters, ala FUNimation's "1080p" telecine that they're using for the season sets).

Re: Your max pay per Dragonbox?
I paid around $1500 for the Movies Dragonbox, the 1st Z Dragonbox and the GT Dragonbox. And they were all used, but still in almost brand new condition. I didn't care though. I had to have them. And I must get my hands on the rest.

I sold off my movies dragonbox a while back, but I plan to rebuy the entire series as R2 singles since it's more practical. The boxes are quite frequent on Yahoo Auctions/Celga/etc.
You can get all 49 of the Z singles off Celga/Yahoo Japan Auctions for $600 + arm and a leg for shipping.
Still cheaper than getting a single dragonbox.

I have a sister or two I'd be willing to trade for the DragonBoxes...

I spent roughly around $240 for my movies Dragon Box from Amazon Japan which I thought was a great bargain. I entered an Auction for the first Z Dragon Box and bid roughly $600, however the bidder had no obligation to sell if they didn't believe the bid was high enough so it went to re-auction. As it happened someone else won the auction with a bid of $70 less and this time it was accepted. So you can imagine how pissed I was. I'll be keeping my eyes open for a GT Dragon Box though if anyone could give me a heads up in the future.
