The 18th of this month, but if you search around (Best Buy, etc.) you could probably find it a few days earlier than that.

The Z-Store starts shipping these in a matter of days, actually.

Does anyone know what program was used to rip the lossless comparison video clips that ect5150 posted here?

Yeah, I sure do know what I used to make the clips.

While there are several programs that work, I personally use SmartRipper to grab the streams from the DVDs, then I use mkvtoolnix to make the MKV files. MKV fiels will take the decrypted VOB streams from the DVDs as inputs.

Just for comparison:
(WARNING: I grabbed these screen VERY quickly, and the program/method I used doesn't give the images the proper luma-channel adjustments that we should normally look at. So the colors of the DBox may look slightly 'washed'

Wasn't able to / unwilling to find all exact scenes, and the DBox images should have a slightly greater level of contrast (has to do with how I pulled them).

Those actually look pretty acurate to the DragonBoxes. It's obvious that the Season Sets are brighter, but the colors themselves seem pretty acurate.

Whatever FUNi's doing with this, they're getting better at it.

Yeah, another odd thing is I also am not noticing that it appears more cropped on the bottom than the top. Odd.

I was actually impressed about this set until I was pulled back into the reality called the Dragonbox.

Ok, something else I think I'm noticing. Could it be that since Funimation zoomed in on their masters that the gain seems so insignificant? Because looking at these comparison shots to the Dragonbox it seems as if the gain on the sides is more like 2% than 5% or whatever the original number was.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

For Funimation, those colours are great.

If only they could have given us that on the previous boxes.

These aren't no Dragonboxes, but to me, those captures look quite good (cropping aside), the backgrounds are still getting that pastel-washy effect, but nowhere near the extent of the previous boxes.

I'll have to purchase these anyway (Bilingual dvd's here in Australia kick in when Trunks arrives, and even then I think it's intermittently) but at least these shots haven't caused me to be completely bummed out about it like I was when I bought the Season 1 set.

Can you show us the Season 3 version of this:

Sorry for the interlacing in the screen capture. I was forced to use another computer that didn't have the software that I usually use.

When Trunks arrives? Are you sure? I'm pretty sure Madman didn't start bilingual DVDs until the Goten vs. Trunks fight at the 25th Budokai.

http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalo ... ethod=view

After a quick check, the first Bilingual dvd starts at episode 107, however Madman lists the extra track and subtitles under "special features"
Madman weren't consistent with this, as far as I can tell they dropped the ball constantly.

I just skipped ahead in the catalog and found 3.08 (Imperfect Cell) to be the first to drop the Japanese audio track, they continue with the Uncut bilingual dvds for a little while, before it drops off entirely (and I couldn't be bothered checking to see when it kicked back in :P)

Thankyou Madman! for making the Season sets my only option!

Oh yeah. But wasn't it a sarcastic joke? desirecampell actually said that it would like that. Here's the pic I'm talking about:

Reharding this image, atleast we can say that it's much clearer. I never noticed how much grain was on the older releases until I was looking at this. The Season Sets do have some nice looking, clearer footage.

How much has Vegeta's death scene changed? Is it any better or worse?

the Reason that the Season Sets have more area on the top and bottom than the mockups people did before they came out, is because said Mockups were done using the original Fullscreen DVDs, and whoever did them wasn't taking into account that the Added footege on the sides (small as it may be) offsets exactly how much is cropped from the top and bottom. IE, if there's more on the sides, you have to crop less to make it 16x9.
Personally, I understand why FUNi is doing the Cropping, (even if they insist on lying about it)
It's because of the damage, and this is cheaper than digitally fixing it on EVERY frame, and it's better than cropping the frame All around and blowing it up. so It doesn't Bother Me THAT MUCH. if the sets cost a lot more, I'd probably care more, but I've been watching through them, and I've been enjoying it. the only time I really saw something that was REALLY bad, was when The Ginyuu Tokusentai lined up, and Butter's Head gets cut off. other Than that, it's ok for me.

Amen...

Also, its noteworthy to mention FUNIs original Freeza singles were actually decent quality to begin with (i.e. - I don't think their masters suffered from the same damage and whatnot as other sagas). So, when they didn't screw up their own work with Nappa Toothpaste effects, the clean images actually do look pretty nice minus the widescreen. I could actually live with the brightness issues seeing how most of the colors are right on.

However, look at these two screens

There is a great deal of smoothing on the dirt on the ground.

Hmm...so in short the masters used for the Freeza arc are in much better condition than the previous? All right.
I'm actually interested in seeing how this would compare against Funi's earlier DVDs. Could someone post a comparison between one of the Super Saiyan Goku images (Particularily this one) from the Season 3 set and the earlier Freeza DVDs? It'd be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Please do not kill me, but I like Funi shots better. I do not like the cropping, but I do like the color and the smoothness...

I'm'll have to buy this just for Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation. I forgot how badass that whole sequence was, especially with the funky aura and hair. It's like he's become a god or something.

You'd really need to see them in motion to make an accurate comparison.

I was "sort of" impressed when I first saw the funi screencaps, but when I watched them on my non-forgiving HDTV, they looked like crap.
