It's not like FUNimation Dubs of Dragon Ball series are Best because they clearly aren't even their Kai and Super Dubs aren't Perfect and doesn't even Compare to Dubs of Deathnote, Naruto, Bleach or Code Geass in terms of overall Accuracy and Voice work. Also, I personally prefer Peter Kelamis Goku over Sean's, in my opinion even Lawrence Simpson knows more about Goku the Character than Sean. I wish if Viz was also given License for Dubbing Dragon Ball to that we would have a faithful Dub side by side. But FUNimation's Voice Actors need to know that they should not think of them as the only voices of Characters.
I can't imagine how many people would be pissed off if FUNimation lost their license to Viz. Sure, I'd like to see someone else dubbing Dragon Ball (I'd go with either Bang Zoom or Ocean for a redub of DB and Z), but Funimation has improved immensely since Kai and the recent movies. Fans would feel betrayed if these people were replaced.

And I strongly disagree about Schemmel not understanding Goku as a character. He had terrible scripts, but with the more accurate ones, he now understands Goku perfectly. When I first watched the Kai episode where Goku tells Frieza he's a Super Saiyan, that's when Schemmel became my favorite English Goku.
I really don't see Funimation losing the licence anytime soon, Dragon Ball is what made them and the sales for Super Part One are a sign that the money is going to just keep coming, especially when they release the new content which will have even more hype behind it.

As much as I love Schemmel's work as Goku (and he is my favourite English Goku by far) I do think the one aspect of the character missing, even in recent dubs is the hick side of his character, although that is partly due to the script. An "ain't" here and there, for example would really help push Schemmel that one step further.

Agree with this.

It would go over like a lead balloon with most of the fanbase, but I would love to hear hear an english Goku with a "country" accent.

I wasn't implying that would happen. I was just stating what probably could happen if they somehow lost their licence for Dragon Ball, and if they did lose it, they could still survive as a company.

Schemmel's Goku having the hick side would be great.

Schemmel I will agree is a good screamer but I don't see him as Goku at all..he gets the Serious parts really good but when he has to make goku sound Goofy and odd then he sounds like he sniffed to much Laughing Gas but Nozawa captures his Goofy Side Perfectly. Sean's comedic moments as Goku were never that funny. The subs much more consistent with that.
now in Kai and Super dub I like Schemmel as chilled out Goku, but anytime there is a fight, he makes his voice way to angry sounding. I mean even Nozawa deepens her voice when goku is serious, but Schemmel just gets so overly angry sounding all the time.
I mean not only Goku but Even for Black Goku he differentiates his voice too much and compared to other goku Voice actors he's got a Deep voice so when he deepens it further it sounds less goku like more like some gruff Western hero Who is angry even The Latino Goku hasn't got that deep voice in SSJ3 form and also Masako's Goku sounds like a deeper version of the high pitched voice she gives goku in base form but in Sean's Case it's like a deeper version of an already deep voice and that too without Hick Tone.
Atleast Peter Kelamis Dialogue Delivery felt more like a Hick than Sean's Ever does. But, they should atleast try giving goku a Mountain Side Type of Tone because even In Japanese Version the Hick tone is a Big Part of his character.
I prefer Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, DB/Z/GT Movies, Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball GT in Japanese.
For DBZ Kai and two new Movies I like both Dub and Sub. I Prefer Shunsuke Kikuchi Soundtracks over All other Composers.

I don't find Schemmel's voice to be that much deeper than other Goku actors. It's not as high as Kelamis, granted, but the rest are all lower in pitch than he is. His initial Goku Black voice was more a result of not knowing the material he was working on originally than having a deep voice for the character and going deeper. In all honesty its not much different than the Super Saiyan 4 voice he uses, and even Nozawa herself goes very deep for that transformation. Having said that Schemmel is in a very fortunate position as unlike the rest of the dub Gokus he has had well over a decade to learn about Goku and develop his potrayal.

Yes the "wanna's" are spot on. As I've said the use of "g's" is not a necessity or a dealbreaker but they would be a nice tweak.

I'll never understand how people can think that Schemmel's Goku voice is deep. David Gasman's voice is the one that is deep, and he'd be much better as Superman with that voice.

I think it's a combination of things. People associate Schemmel's Goku voice with being Superman-like due to how the character was written in the original Funimation dub. Superman is associated with heroism, heroism is associated with manliness, manliness is associated with deep voices. It's the image of that chain of association alongside the fact Schemmel took over from a higher pitched actor (Kelamis) who, for that reason he will naturally be compared to. Since Schemmel is lower pitched (and not by much I'd add) than Kelamis and Kelamis was already respected for his performance (especially in the Pioneer trilogy) the standard was set for an English Goku and how high pitched he should be, a standard which many think Schemmel didn't meet.

I'd say Schemmel's range is pretty spot on, high for the goofy and chilled moments and lower for being serious and combat sequences, not too different from Nozawa actually.

This guy's argument is like saying that Sabat and co who work on the One Piece dub can't make fun of the One Piece 4kids dub because they're not the "only dub out there". Schemmel's recent approval of Lex Lang as Goku in the Bang Zoom dub should be an indication about how he feels about the whole thing right now. Schemmel gets a lot of shit from people about stuff that doesn't matter so it's not hard to see why he's just a little on edge about the whole thing

Well, one should never associate the voice with the writing. Although Goku was written like Superman in the Funimation dub, Schemmel never sounded like Tim Daly, George Newbern or any other Superman voice actor I've heard.

That isn't what they mean. They mean he sounds like the character. Superman sticks up for Truth, Justice, and the American way. He's stalwart and true and defends the innocent.
Kelamis was already respected for his performance... the standard was set for an English Goku and how high pitched he should be, a standard which many think Schemmel didn't meet.
By who? I remember nothing but complaints about his performance. It's only in recent years, much like the in-house dub cast, that his performance has been given high marks, and undeservedly. If your view of what GOku should sound like is his pitch, then that's an irrational standard.

I have a hard time with it, but that's hardly the point. Kelamis was not well liked years ago. And if you are judging a performance mainly on pitch, that's an asinine standard.

Never claimed he was. It wasn't a "my guy is better than your guy". I was pointing out that Kelamis was not well recieved initially. The difference is Schemmel got better, which is one reason his performances have been well recieved, at least his later ones.

Umm... Source?
This was a popular UK Dragon Ball fansite. Browse around there a little if you like, they in general crapped on the Funimation dub, and praised the Ocean dub; from what I can gather, this opinion was fairly common, as that site seems to have been pretty popular at the time. There's even two interviews with Peter Kelamis on the site, the first of which has this in its intro:
When FUNimation changed the cast, Kelamis was replaced as well. Sean Schemmel was the new Gokuu va, who tried to imitate Corlett's toughness instead of Kelamis' charm and innocence. We were disappointed.......
Anyway, putting aside how things were years ago, let's focus on the now; go to any YouTube video showing of Kelamis's Goku, and you'll find two warring sides: Hardcore Funimation dub-fans who find anything that doesn't use the Faulconer score utterly repulsive and un-Dragon Ball, and fans of Peter Kelamis or the Ocean dub in general. The kind of people who'd search for this stuff are usually the more Kelamis-loving side, so you'll probably see a lot of Kelamis love in those comments.
ABED wrote:his performance has been given high marks, and undeservedly.
Can you hear that noise? That's the sound of me bashing my head against my keyboard over how often I encounter the problem of people on the internet assuming their opinion is the absolute truth of the universe.

The bottom line, ABED, is that a lot of people like Kelamis. Regardless of whether he was always popular, or if it's a more recent trend, he has a lot of fans. Maybe you don't like him, and that's okay; differing opinions is what makes life interesting. But if someone(Or a lot of people) doesn't share your opinion, don't get all antsy about it, it's very frustrating to deal with people like that.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Your sources are hardly what I would call academic and are still someone's impression. Both our sources are anecdotal. I was around the fandom when Kelamis was FIRST cast and his performance wasn't well recieved.

And it is in fact ridiculous that anyone puts pitch as the most important aspect of a performance. How is that a rational criterion for such a judgment?

ANd I don't care about Youtube comment sections. It's pointless to try and have a rational discussion there.
