Not much to talk about. He is one of my favorite characters but his reintroduction as a fighter is forced and unnecessary. He passed the torch long ago. The fact his techniques are still so effective against strong opponents paints him as a coward, that for decades didn't want to risk his life against the enemies faced by the Z Fighters.

Kame-Sennin's participation in this tournament is a mistake by Mr. Toriyama.

I wouldn't really call him a coward. He tried to stop King Piccolo and died (I don't know why he didn't try to fight in buff form though), he asked Goku if he wanted help with Raditz but Goku said no because he was already revived once, same reason would probably apply to fighting Nappa and Vegeta. He wasn't on Namek so he couldn't help there, and after that all the opponents were way above his pay grade.

I think people are just over-hyping the strength of the people in this tournament. Most of these no names and fodder could easily be as low as namek saga tier and Roshi has been training (ya still kind of dumb he got that strong).

He shoudn't have to ask Goku. Piccolo fought the Saiyajin, and so did Chaozu and Kuririn when Vegeta and Nappa arrived. All three could not be revived in case of death. He wasn't on Namekusei bacause he didn't want to. Instead, 5-year-old Gohan was.

My point is, none of that is a problem when the story implies that there was nothing Roshi could do. But then we have Super showing that he could still help, just didn't.

Honestly, could they do much? I mean, lets be real, Nappa could have killed everyone in 2 seconds if he really wanted.


And of course him being here is forced but honestly, everyone besides the saiyans would feel that way. Piccolo hasn't done much, tien has't done much, 18 hasn't done much, 17 hasn't done much. Most of their efforts were downright well insignificant.

Easy solution to to that. Give love to the characters and make them powerful enough so they AREN'T useless.

Black only monolog about justice a few times. The most he did it was in Episode 61. Compared that to Future and Merged Zamasu who gave a motive rant every time they opened their months to the point that the show lampshaded it.

And he did. Remember that he one-shotted Piccolo the moment he became remotely serious. He could have killed him even earlier when he knocked him unconscious for several minutes. The Saiyans even took a three hour break to wait for Goku.

Roshi being there would just be another log to the fire.

It would also be OOC for Whis. Despite what the fandom seems to think, Whis doesn't train random fodder. Vegeta literally had t bribe Whis to get training and he never showed any care about Gohan despite his latent power. The only fighter Whis showed any real investment with is Goku, who he took as his student just by Goku asking.

Nope. If Toriyama can whip god forms out of thin air, come up with Namekian fusion out of nowhere, etcetera, etcetera, he can come up with reasons for the others to get more powerful. It's just that he doesn't care to do so. Hell, let the damn earthlings try to master the use of kaioken or something like that since anyone can use it. Have them get their potentials unlocked by Elder Kaioshin, more Namekian book of legends bullshit! anything! It doesn't have to be Whis. Just get people to the point where they can at least somewhat compete like they used to be able to, damn it!

And sure, Whis might not care, but you'd think Beerus would at least want his fighters to all be strong for the tournament with the entire fucking universe at stake. And ya can't say there wasn't enough time to prepare since the room of spirit and time exists.

When I read over the mechanics of Roshi's Thunder Shock Surprise, I'm surprised at how it appears to incorporate certain aspects of biology into its framework -- i.e channeling the electrical impulses of nerves into his hands and then discharging it at the opponent. It would be understandable if the dermal burning and electrical current transference through the chest were rendered impossible thanks to Nappa's greatly higher power level shielding his external body, but the head should still be vulnerable because of the organs and cavities leading inside like the ear. A high enough voltage should have induced peripheral neuropathy which would have effectively crippled Nappa anyway by damaging his neural framework and general motor functions.

These characters all fighters by nature. How they contribute best is by playing to those strengths and fighting enemies who would mean them and the world harm. But with the limited amount of enemies there tends to be coupled with the short-standard limitations of how to apply their talents, they oftentimes come out looking humiliated because they couldn't measure up to the same standards as someone like Goku or Vegeta. How do you diversify the applications of these characters in ways that may not require huge amounts of strength? Do you change the nature of their personalities by turning them into non-combatants or do you somehow assign a meaningful role to them on the battlefield that ultimately provides essential support, be it offensive or supplementary in nature?

Gohan and Piccolo are fighting Doctor Rota (U6), but he's (Doctor Rota) suddenly shot by someone else. Tenshinhan uses "that special attack" to try and locate this mysterious attacker, who even Vegeta is trying to beat.

It looks like it isn't a crossover, so it's likely an adaption of the Jaco/Yamcha manga if not a flashback for one of the univeres.
