Dark Vegeta-Sama wrote:Honestly, FUNi ended this set at a really stupid point, literally just a few episodes shy of the end of the Goku/Freeza fight. I mean, they could've at least ended it at episode 107 when everyone is wished back by the Dragonballs and it's revealed that Goku doesn't want to return to earth yet. That at least has some sense of finality, whereas ending it close to the end of the fight is retarded and sort of a kick in the balls to fans. They're labeling these as "season sets" when in reality they aren't following any particular "season" at all; they're just randomly cutting off the episode count at around 30-something episodes.
What the hell are you people talking about?

Comprised of 33 episodes, the Season Three set kicks off at Episode 75 and does in fact end with Episode 107, so I don't see the problem here.

The Season Four set (Episodes 108-139) will start with the Garlic Jr. filler, introduce Trunks and then segue into the conflict with the Artificial Humans proper, ending with the discovery of Cell's time machine. This also feels somewhat logical IMHO, because then the next "season" will focus on the mystery of Cell and his evolution into perfection.

FUNimation isn't quite following the original broadcast "seasons" as they aired on Cartoon Network, no, but I think they're doing all right with their choices on where to end each set (with the exception of Season One, which was just stupid).

I had read otherwise.

If this set does infact end at episode 107, good for them.

It does. Of that, I can assure you.

If the set actually did clip just a few episodes short of an ending to the Goku vs. Freeza battle, I'd be upset too. That would be almost as moronic a decision as the 16:9 aspect ratio. I mean, come on:

Freeza: The planet will explode in five minutes.
Goku: I'm waiting.
Freeza: Well, it's another three months until the next Season Set. Keep waiting.
Goku: Fucking shit.

Well . . . it's either that, or just that I'm anal-obsessive like most everyone else here. :D

On another topic, what's with Tanooki's dissection? Is that happening this time around, or it's late enough where people can get their own that he's decided not to indulge?
I was unsure of that myself. I figure when I get it I'll just post some stuff in this thread instead of making a new one. It would be pointless to have two season three threads. :(

I've been on a big Freeza redub kick, so here's a bit more info. Linda Young did in fact redub some of Freeza form 4. Dende's Demise was the only episode that I've seen to have a redub of the final Frieza. When I watched it, I noticed that the voice was higher in pitch, closer to Freeza form 1 and the voice used during GT and the end of Z. I immediately felt momentarily saddened that we wouldn't have the older Freeza voice. Then, in the next episode, I heard it again. I was again saddened, this time because I missed the redubbed voice.

After that episode, the only major characters (Oolong and a couple of the others on earth were redubbed, for the record) to receive a noticeable redub were Vegeta and Krillin. I know it's been said before here, but Vegeta's death scene is *perfect* in the redub, especially with the Japanese music. I know it isn't the same as the J-version in terms of lines, but Sabat's performance is brilliant. Then, the next episode, the very next episode, has what I am convinced to be the original 1999 version of Vegeta's death in a clip in the recap. The scene where Vegeta is holding his hand up toward Goku, saying "Stop him ... please" I can't prove it, but I'm so positive that this is the 1999 version.

That leads me to another point regarding the recaps. They redubbed all of the recaps in this set, and thankfully took out some terrible lines (the recap of "The Ultimate Battle" in "Clash of the Super Powers" had a baseball reference that was nausea-inducing). If they went to that trouble, why not redub the brief pieces of character dialog that they went to the trouble of redubbing in the full episode? I was actually offended that they had the narrarator talking over Vegeta's death in the recap, but more than that, I was utterly disgusted that they didn't use Sabat's redub of the same scene.

I have a final thing to mention (I know- long post), and that's the audio quality. It's well known that the Japanese music is too quiet, but there's something that really stands out. Goku's lines are not just mediocre, there is a noticeable sound quality difference between his lines and any redub line. It's hard to tell while he and Freeza are fighting, but in an episode where he and Krillin, or especially he and Vegeta talk, even briefly, there is a noticeable sound in the background of Goku's lines that is abscent from Vegeta's. I don't want to nit-pick about this, and I realize that Schemmel didn't return to redub Goku, whose role was thankfully improved during season 4 and fine after that, but I did want to point out this little technical issue.

Anyone notice that despite the fact that it's DVNR'd, it doesn't look nearly as blurry/smeared/mangled looking as the previous sets on my TV. It looks really sharp this time. It actually looks as sharp as the Dragon Box when you watch youtube clips from it. I wonder why...
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Because YouTube further blurs everything to Hell with its atrocious compression. You can't exactly use YouTube as a gauge in any type of comparison for anything.

I meant that when you watch clips from the set on youtube, it looks as sharp as the dragon box clips already on youtube (not the ones fucked up by compression though).

Every single clip on YouTube is fucked by compression. FLV (flash video) compresses things horribly, completely forgoing quality to give an easy-to-stream video.

Except Stage6 videos. That site is awesome! Barely any quality is lost, and aspect ratio is retained. YouTube, like Mike said, can't really be used to compare anything when it comes to quality.

Should have this set on Monday...

That's because all Stage6 vidoes are DIVX, which is a real semi-decent video codec rather than a lousy compressed flash stream.

Um *Cough* Tries to resit joining in with the 9000 jokes Well getting back on subject could anyone upload a clip from the Dragonbox set of where Goku transformes into a Super Saiyan so we can compare it with the one which was uploaded from the Funimation season 3 boxset for comparison.

I'd really like to see how close it was to the original

It seems FUNi forgot to fix stuff in the "Last time on DBZ" recap things. I just saw the Recap at the start of the episode right after Vegeta dies. When you hear Veggie talking in the background it sound like 1999 Sabat.

Those sorts of mistakes aren't (particularly) new, Lavender. On the Season Two set, you can hear a number of fighting exhertions from 1999 Vegeta mixed in with 2007 Vegeta dialogue . . . and that's during the actual episodes (73-74), not the recap.

Though admittedly, what you found is a fair bit worse.
