Is Dragonball GT entire filler?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Is Dragonball GT entire filler?

Post by Cosmodious » Sun Sep 16, 2007 5:01 am

Would Dragonball GT be considered entirely filler or since it is it's own series entirely canon?

Well, it certainly doesn't match the literal definition of filler, since the manga was done, so there was nothing to fill. (Except maybe Final Bout?)

As for being canon, that's been debated for years. Back in the day, only the manga was considered canon among fans, but saying that nowadays is likely to get you knifed in a dark alley.

By Toei's standards, it's obviously a part of their anime continuity. But it makes reference to far too many anime-only or movie-only elements, so I don't think many people, if anyone, consider it a possible part of the manga continuity.

Personally, I don't really consider it canon, but I'm a manga purist. I just think of GT as a sequel to the anime version of the series.

GT is pretty much a crappy sequel to capitalize on Z's success. Kinda like what Disney was doing left and right with their animated movies.

I agree with what Rachel said. Though I'm not so much of a manga purist, so that's slightly different for me. However, I personally don't consider GT anime canon. Way too many plotholes and rehash plots and ideas taken from the original Dragonball and DBZ. Also I'm not sure what it is about GT, but there just always seems to feel like there's something "missing" from it. Perhaps it's missing the "Toriyama touch", though he did give his full approval for it.

I've never thought of GT as canon. I just think of it as an interesting side story (okay, maybe scratch the interesting part...) But I consider everything else canon, like the filler in DBZ.

In essence, GT, much like the movies, is a fanfiction that Toei fledged out into a sequel of sorts for the anime. Since it would carry the Dragonball name, Toriyama did approve of it.... Still, it's really nothing more than an interpretation as to what happens after the canon story line came to a close.

Although it can be fun at times, a fanfiction is simply a fanfiction.

At least it wasn't as godawful as some fanfiction I've seen.

It's not really filler because there's nothing to fill. "Fillers" simply a few episodes made to fill a gap between sagas. There's nothing that comes after GT. In truth, they're usually made because the anime is being produced faster then the Manga, so they have some extra time to kill.

I've never considered GT canon, not even in the slightest bit. Toriyama neither came up with the story, or was the primary designer of the characters, therefore it's not his work, it is simply a licensed imitation of his work.

If you actually look at Neko Majin Z (which is OOU for Dragon Ball, but it's still Toriyama's work), it takes place sometime after Z and before GT. Uub wears a gi similar to Goku's yellow one, Pan doesn't wear the same clothes, Goku has dark green pants instead of the GT yellow, Goten's hair is quite different then in GT.

Yeah, you really need to be careful with what you read. There are quite a few gems out there though - many much more satisfying than GT itself.

You can also come up with your own, which is a lot of fun! ^_^

Toriyama said he placed Dragonball GT as a "Side Story."

1) Is GT Filler? No, for reasons already explained.
2) Is GT canon with the manga? No. Too many inconsistencies and references to anime/movie-only elements (as already said), plus Toriyama considers it a "side story".
3) Is GT canon with the anime? Open to interpretation. Personally, I believe it is canon with the anime. Toei clearly intended it to be a direct continuation of the DB and DBZ anime series IMO; it has Toriyama's approval (as well as acknowledgment of the original universal dragonball hunting and major character designs), has direct flashback and dialogue references to the DBZ anime, has a spot in an anime timeframe in one of the Daizenshuu (I think), etc. etc.

Definitely have to disagree with you here Conan. As I said, way too many inconsistencies and plotholes with the first 2 series. If Toei wanted it to be canon, they should have definitely put more effort into not screwing up details and previous history so badly. And of course you can argue that it had Toriyama's full approval so he didn't have a problem with it, but honestly, the man probably thought the stuff was all correct given that memory of his. >>

I agree, GT was far from perfect, but the main reason I consider it canon (with the anime) is probably due to how much I loved the ending, and how much better it was than the ending of Z.

GT to me was worth it because of that.

(Also DAN DAN is my favorite opening theme :P)

There's also the fact that Toriyama gave full aproval (and design input) for Brolly. But I don't see anyone using that as a basis to claim Brolly is canon to the series.

Anyway, yeah, GT's not filler but I don't consider it anime canon either. Movie canon, sure. Anime? No.

TORIYAMA AKIRA SUPER INTERVIEW
From Daizenshuu Vol. 6: Movies & TV Specials
. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interviewer: How would you position the animated movie Dragon Ball?

Toriyama Akira: I consider the movies to be a 'different dimension' from the original, printed comic edition. With the movies, I become part of the audience.
As you can see Toriyama consider the movies non-canon because he was part of the audience.

The Fusion with Animation

In talking about the story of Dragon Ball, the TV animation should not be left out. It has widened the fan base, and even now, many anime fans continue to send their support. The TV anime has developed with the author, Toriyama Akira, and now, he himself speaks about this aspect of Dragon Ball.
The way I see it, Anime should be considered Canon since it was developed with the author himself. That's left up for interpretation

Again, the Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z movies are anime as well.

Also, Toriyama had some involvement in the movies, just like he did in some of the TV series filler, so what do you make of it?

There is a difference between TV series and the movies ya know? Toriyama considers the movies (Brolly, Janemba) out of continuity.

The TV series was developed with the author, it is also stated that Dragonball is a "Fusion" with it.

Yeah, but just try and remember they're both "anime". ^^;
