What is it with power and half breeds?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

What is it with power and half breeds?

Seems like in most anime, not just Dragonball, that characters which are of mixed blood either have the potential to kick ass or actually do kick ass, far more so than full blooded characters.

Is there a reason for that?

Goten and Trunks obviously are shown to have that great power and potential pretty early in the Buu saga and do manage to kick him around pretty good. I see their immaturity as their main drawback but even that didn't stop them from tearing him up pretty good.

Gohan kicked Cell around like a toy and even prior to that, we got all kinds of hints at his power throughout the series, just only really got to see it in action in the later sagas.

Vegeta mentions that blending Saiyan and human blood "begets a powerful hybrid" (at least that's how my manga translated it) in the early manga but my question remains:

Why does being of mixed blood seem to open the "infinite power" doors?

Loosely based off science, I guess; my biology professor taught that hybrids tend to by hardier than their pure-blood parents.

Umm... It could have something to do with anti racism?
... Yeah, or maybe the bio explanation works. :D

Meh, it's like purebred dogs versus cross or mixed breeds. The pure ones always tend to have more health problems and not be as strong as the mixed. More varied genes, means exactly that.
