Dragonball Crossovers: Opinions
Dragonball Crossovers: Opinions
I remember seeing a thread about Dragonball crossovers a few years back but wanted to bring it up again. I don't know if it's been brought up since then; if this is a really repetitive thread, I apologize.
Now, I personally find crossover fanfictions to be a very interesting idea. I have to wonder though, what makes someone decide to put two different anime together? Attack power? Similar situation? Personality of characters? Same creator, what?
Me personally, I tend to go by the similarities I see between two anime and then play with the differences. Just a little of my ramblings on the topic and some crossovers I've seen or think might be possible…
Most crossovers that I've seen are humorous or meant to be a parody. Lots of Dragonball/Sailor Moon crossovers follow this stance. I'm a fan of both anime so I think that's a waste of their potential. Most people seem to write just the dumbed down American version of the Senshi but if one's seen the Japanese version, especially the last few seasons, the Senshi mature quite a bit. I've not seen a lot of crossovers that utilize the Outer Senshi either who are emphasized over and over as being far more mature and powerful than the Inner Senshi with the exception of Sailor Moon.
This in mind, I tend to see the two anime meeting as something that could have some interesting situations arise. Power wise, most of the Senshi are far behind the fighters of Dragonball Z with two possible exceptions. Sailor Moon seems to hold most of the power but she doesn't like to use it. Sailor Saturn on the other hand is one I always pictured as being able to hold her own if need be, being that she carries the power of death and rebirth. Being able to blow up a planet is still a pretty formidable feat, even in the later sagas of Dragonball Z and Saturn need only say three words to accomplish it. She's probably the most underused Senshi I've seen yet to me, carries the most potential.
It also depends on whether one is using the anime or manga version of Sailor Moon as the two versions vary dramatically with the manga being much darker on the whole. Most fans seem to only know the anime version which is a real shame. Usagi in particular reminds me more of Goku in the manga than she does the anime. As the series goes, you see her figure herself out more as a fighter. Never quite reaches Goku or the others' level in her way of fighting as she still resists killing immensely but then she is supposed to still be a teenager while most of the Dragonball Z fighters, with the exception of Gohan in earlier seasons, are adults with quite a few years of fighting under the belt.
Also, why does everyone automatically put the two groups as rivals, against one another? I find stories where they team up to be more satisfying but then that's just me…
Another crossover that I personally am attempting is an Inuyasha/Dragonball Z crossover. Probably one of my favorite mixes. Why? Well, mainly because of the characters' personalities which I'll admit is what drives most of my writing rather than the fighting though with DBZ, you have to put that in there too. Goku was always one of my favorites because of his gentle, carefree personality and seems to pretty much trust anyone unless they give him reason not to. Contrasting it with Inuyasha whom has always been outcast and shunned and therefore doesn't really trust anybody was always something I felt would be fun to play with. I'm a fan of fiddling with Goku's paternal side too so that might have something to do with it. I'm an emotional person so I like to play with emotional situations…
I'm also one that doesn't feel that you have to be more powerful than someone to win a battle so the power differences doesn't make much difference to me. I tend to think the Backlash Wave of Inuyasha's is pretty powerful in its own right. That aside, teamwork seems to win battles more than brute force does for that group. Then, if you wanna throw Sesshoumaru in somewhere, he can kick some ass around and is probably the only one that comes to mind that might rival Vegeta in being a hard ass…
I also see some similarities between Inuyasha and Gohan, aside from being mixed blood. I'm a big fan of Gohan so I'm bias here…
If Inuyasha is in danger, he turns into a blood thirsty beast that doesn't even feel pain.
"His heart will be consumed by the demon power. He will no longer remember who he is. He will battle without end until his flesh wears out."
Gohan doesn't like to let his full potential out, out of fear of losing himself, like he did in the Cell Games
"I think I'll let him suffer some more."
Not quite the same extent but similar nonetheless which is intriguing to me.
Plus, for some reason, thinking about a technology loving Bulma winding up in Feudal Japan is very amusing to me… hell, that entire group in Feudal Japan is very amusing to me. Course, you know country hick Goku and ChiChi'd be just fine. Eh, I like odd situations and I like putting people in new environments, breaks the routine…
Those two are the two that currently catch my interest, mainly because I know the anime involved pretty well, but more people are also using One Piece and Naruto, which I can't form an opinion on either way because I'm not familiar with either though Naruto is catching my interest. Just pondering why and how certain characters interact and either form alliances or new enemies make crossovers fascinating for me. The best ones for me are when the two (or more) anime are more or less equal with characters balancing one another out, with no author bias either way. Otherwise, it tends to turn into a "this anime is better than this one because…" story.
Okay, I've babbled on for a long time…anyone have an opinion one way or another on crossovers?

Power is often my problem with crossovers. Even Saiyan Saga Vegeta could blow up the Earth with one blast. 'Teamwork' does jack against someone who can punch planets in half, or even with them.
I don't mind being proven wrong, though.
Humor is exempted, of course, and I've read a DBZ/SM crossover that had me crying on my keyboard I was laughing so hard.

Re: Dragonball Crossovers: Opinions
I like that crossover, too. I don't think it works so well with Sailor Moon because if you include any action scenes, well, the styles of fighting just don't match up. With Inuyasha, it does. It is important that they make some kind of sense together. I'm not bashing Sailormoon/Dragonball crossovers, I just think I would personally find it difficult to do because the logic of it, how the world and powers are supposed to work, don't mesh well together. Not impossible, though.ulisa wrote:Another crossover that I personally am attempting is an Inuyasha/Dragonball Z crossover. Probably one of my favorite mixes.

As long as its well writen and doesn't give a black haired character from the other series the power to be Super Saiya-Jin (However that does make good fanart) I might be interested in Dragon Ball crossovers. Like everyone says power is a difficult thing and everyone wants the Z era cast.

Oh good. I was thinking that you was going to mention Sailor and the Seven Ballz and Star Ballz.Rocketman wrote:I remember it was on fanfiction.net, I'm sorry to say I don't recall much more than that; it was years and years ago when I read it.SonEric84 wrote:Would you happen to recall what one this is and where I can find it?

Hehe...I know you guys are talking about fanfics, but this came up so I couldn't resist. I did this lil quickie a long time ago, totally forgot about it until this thread. I haven't read many crossover fanfics, but I must say that I loved the Dragonball/Onepiece crossover, my two fav series ever!

Oh man, I only skimmed several of these posts cause they be looooooooong. But that aside, I loooove crossovers that are done well. If you have a reason for the crossover to happen (a plausable one is even better!) and the two series make sense with each other (even the two most unlike series can do this when the story is written well) then it can be pure awesomeness.
I, myself, haven't done many attempts at such stories yet. I've only written and finished one so far. That story being Adrift, a DBZ and AU X-men Evolution story with the Z characters being post Buu saga. I'm currently working on the sequel, Adrift 2 (yeah, real original, eh?) that'll add another X-men universe to the mix and, possibly another series as well.
I'm also working on a story called War of the Realms which is just one massive crossover featuring a handful of originals along with Chuunin Exam prelim era Naruto, Sakura, Rock Lee, and Hinata as well as Goku (21st Budokai era, literally) traveling from one universe to the next trying to put a stop to an inter-dimensional evil empire that's invaded all three of their universes. The story will hop around to original worlds and worlds based on other series as well as AUs of their own series.
As for crossovers I've read and liked? Oi, there's a few. IMO, the greatest DBZ/SM story ever written is Specter of Revenge. It isn't finished and hasn't been updated in over 2 years, sadly, but it is awesome.
Another good one is The Kakarotto Saga. It's part of a large series of crossovers, but the only one related to DB, featuring the New X-Men and Tenchi. Really god story but a number of chracters feel way off. Such as Gohan being overly angsty, even considering the story plot he's too angsty.
And, er, well, it's not DB related, but I think Duo would agree with me on this particular story. The Ultimate Cruise is a must read for anyone who's a fan of One Piece or Teen Titans. Or good stories in general, cause it kicks ass.

Whoa. Super-extended-power-posts. @_@
I did enjoy NMZ and Cross Epoch, but I generally don't crossover characters. Everyone in dbz is just way too strong; none of the other series I watch contain any characters who could handle them in battle.
Actually, to Kunzait_83; Naruto reminds me more of Inuyasha without the time-travel and with a much larger main cast. But then I've never seen/read Flame of Recca.

Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball are two of my favorite series ever, but the fighting styles are just so different. Even if they had equal amounts of offensive power, the girls just don't have the physical defense to take the hits, or the speed to avoid them. Though if written well, I suppose anything's feasible.
And now I feel obliged to link this terrible gag crossover I did way back in 2001.

Random side note: I remember when Recca used to be HUGELY popular amongst hardcore anime geeks during the mid/late nineties, and was a staple of the fansubbing scene at the time. Yet even though it now has a domestic DVD release, it seems to have (like too many other anime) fallen into obscurity these days in this post-Cartoon Network generation. Which is a crying shame, considering how awesome it is.
You know I do remember hearing about Recca back when I was a newbie, but it was mainly just advertisements in those comic-format dbz monthlys. I have no idea what its about.
I'm terribly limited with my Naruto knowledge. Several of my friends from DA fell head-over-heels with it back when Shippuuden started, but I stopped watching the series months before Shippuuden began. (episode wise I stopped once Konoha was broken into/ambushed by Orochimaru) I've seen one or two eps here or there and I only started to watch Shippuuden because of said friends mentioned prior.
I like it but it's near-completely void of any comic relief.
And comic relief's one of those things I thrive on, series-wise.
When everything's all serious/angsty practically all the time I get depressed reading/watching it and that defeats the purpose of entertainment.
I'm not sure if I have it in me to completely tackle huge Shounen series like that nowadays. ^_^;;
How long is Flame of Recca? I really did enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho.
