Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Already starting off better than the inconsistent bad writing crap that is the Anime. I cant wait for the recruitment arc so we can actually see what Toriyama helped Toyotaro create. The manga is closer to what Akira Toriyama wants as its been stated he works closer with Toyotaro. All these strength debates and whats what can be settled.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
With the Grand Priest purposely avoiding telling Goku about the destruction of most Universes, I fully expect he won't tell anyone. Meaning everyone will think Goku doomed them to destruction making him the bad guy.
This will either end with Goku coming up as the hero at the end, after there's a revelation. Or it could be built upon and Goku becomes the hated guy throught all the Universes(those remaining).

People exaggerated Beerus "wrecking all the god's." He clearly just dodged and schemed them for a moment.

I've had this complaint for several chapters now, but only now are people starting to catch on?ekrolo2 wrote: Toyotaro's fighting choreography is very limited in terms of variety and I swear he's reused several poses there a dozen or so times by now.
Good chapter, though, really liked the extra characterization on the GoDs.

Or maybe they just forgot about the details? That seems like a more likely scenario.dbgtFO wrote:As has been pointed out already, Belmod mentions being a God of Destruction for 87,910,715 days, which converts to 240,691.4 years, less than Shin's age, which guidebooks established was at least 5 million years.
Apparently someone took offense to that. However it just might be, that what Belmod considers days are different than Earth days, which makes sense, as surely his home planet is not Earth, lol. For example on Venus, a day lasts longer than a year, as it takes 243 earth days for the planet to complete a full resolution, while it rotates the sun in 224 earth days.
Furthermore Zeno's King's Calendar had on the day of the tournament 3,135,500,603 days, which if it were Earth days would be 8,584,709.1 years or less than Beerus' supposed age of +100 million years. I suppose Zeno only started counting way after that?
Whatever the case, given that they also have at least 157 hours in a day, it might just be the case, that we shouldn't assume that characters' mentions of days convert directly to Earth days, unless directly stated to do so, like the Grand Priest helps clarify, when he used terms unknown to Goku and co.(5 tiks = 40 hours, 100 taks = 48 minutes).
How i predict the tournament will end:

In all honesty, Toyotaro can be real good when he does give a fuck. I still say manga Goku vs Merged Zamasu is one of the best fights that's been put out from the new material.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

As an addendum to what I said, it's neat to notice to some of the differences in characterization. Vermouth is a cunt and Sidra/Rou are really empathetic here (well, I guess the scene with Freeza was meant to show they were).
Even Toriyama fell into the pitfalls of repeating the same stances and moves. The difference is that he always drew them from different angles and they were far between so you hardly ever noticed. Toyotaro draws them sometimes multiple times per chapter and always from the front. He really needs to work on his angles and perspective (and speaking of which, there was a nice panel with the Grand Priest and Goku with the POV coming from below).ekrolo2 wrote:We're the DB fandom, not exactly bright or fast

The manga is not any close to what Toriyama wants. It's already well documented that Toriyama works closely with both Toyotaro and the anime staff as he oversees everything related to Super. Not to mention that Toriyama has given Toyotaro and the staff under Toei's umbrella carte blanche to write the story how they feel from one plot point to the next.JazzHands wrote:Already starting off better than the inconsistent bad writing crap that is the Anime. Champa is a dick in both anime and manga. So sad.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
It really is depressing that both portray Champa as an asshole for no reason despite the fact that he now owes Beerus one. I thought it was just general incompetence coming from the writers (since Champa and Beerus' rivalry has been portrayed as a friendly sibling rivalry and it never got into the realm of wishing death upon each-other) but perhaps it really is Toriyama's vision for the character and, if that's the case, I can't help but feel disappointed (or maybe Toriyama's incompetent too, which isn't that far out there either).Legion wrote:Champa is a dick in both anime and manga. Champa wasn't ever really portrayed as being anything but a dick so it doesn't surprise me.
As for the chapter, good chapter. The characterization is great, and I like seeing the differences between this and the anime version. It's fun to see how each takes their own spin on the story. I prefer the Exhibition fights involving Majin Boo VS Basil, Gohan VS Lavender, and Goku VS Bergamo, but I felt this chapter was quite entertaining. I agree that I found the fight choreography fairly uninteresting to me. The actual fight was probably my least favorite part of the chapter.

No, he wasn't, but this goes beyond that. He wants his brother dead. Their rivalry was portrayed as a friendly one with both sides (though mostly Beerus) having a soft spot for each-other.Jigurashi wrote:Champa wasn't ever really portrayed as being anything but a dick so it doesn't surprise me.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
That is nonsense. They were rivals, but still brothers. Champa obviously accepted Beerus's favor with a flair of tsundere. But now? Champa is another character.Miracles wrote:What is wrong with that?Legion wrote:Champa is a dick in both anime and manga. So sad.
Literally beelining toward eliminating his brother before even other universes does not feel right.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Vermouth hands down best God for me, he and his angel really pair well like Beerus and Whis.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
How would any of that change Champa's personality tho? Jerk is a jerk regardless.Legion wrote:That is nonsense. They were rivals, but still brothers. I like that Toyo is drawing a battle royal right out the gate. Next chapter will show us if he can make a good battle royal or not, because despite being the ToP, the battle royal aspect is barely there in the anime. It's always tag battles or one vs all, the most hectic fight was U9 vs Goku/Vegeta
Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
I love this chapter. Everything feels a bit rushed, since the chapter starts with Goku not even at Zeno's place, yet halfway trough the Exhibition Match is already underway, but it does further the quickness that is supposed to take place in Universe as well. The characters even comment on it, so I think the point that everything happens so sudden is well conveyed.
Absolving Goku of any fault for the Tournament from the start doesn't sit that well with me, since I loved that bit of drama in the anime, but knowing that it doesn't really amount to anything, it's probably for the better.
I absolutely love seeing some of the other Gods in their Universe, especially Arak's place which looks amazing and Quitela playing video games. Helles' is a bit bland, tho. Sad to see Vermoud doesn't have his own harem it being just some random planet, but it does add some character to him. Sidra's scene is quite uninteresting, though. Hopefully Rou will showcase his angrier assholish attitude further down the road, but he does work well here.
The gag of Universe 3's Kaioshin being late due to taking a piss is so much Dragon Ball
Used quite well as a reason to give some exposition there, before the action begins.
Beerus being hated by everybody for having caused trouble in the past is meh... The reason is quite stupid too, though the godly hide-an-seek game is quite fun to think about.
Also, the first half of the chapter is so well constructed visually! Waaaay above what we usually get. I think it's only rivaled by some stuff in the first two chapters of the Black arc.
Those double page panels when the Gods arrive on the scene are so good! Not to mention the reaction shots of the Hakaishin when they're summoned on the stage. The Zeno chess match is also full of cool angles that makes it unsettling, fitting for two guys talking about universal destruction! All great stuff!
Too bad that all goes to shit when the action begins. Everything is so safe and linear and unlike some of the other bad fights where those issues are also present, the coreography doesn't help soften it. For example, the Vegeta vs Black fights, while kinda bland and linear as well, are at least full of generally quick movement that at least gives some semblance of dynamism.
There are also some "continuty errors" I noticed that took me out of the fight:
One is when Vermoud kicks Beerus into Mosco's hands. The scene plays out with Beerus dodging a bunch of guys, then dodging Vermoud's right kick, then next panel Beerus is just flying out of nowhere, Vermoud still in the same position. An easy change to fix that would be have Vermoud kicking with his left leg in the second panel and it would be fine.
The other is when everybody attacks Mosco, Champa kicks the robot down with the others, but then Champa is up in the air, Beerus apparently kicking him off screen to create a fake out. I get the point that's trying to be made here, but it's just not constructed well, therefore the surprise is unearned. A quick fix is having an impact effect and Champa's head being blown back in the panel where everybody is in front of Mosco. It would be a small detail that people wouldn't really catch on at the first reading and not ruin the surprise of Beerus' fake out.
I'm not nitpicking this stuff often and I expect people to especially disagree on the second one and I do think these are small problems, but they were enough to take me out of the action. No matter how bad I thought some other fights were, something like this never happened, so that's why I stand my ground on this being the worst fight of the manga.
The Gods' fighting styles were very boring too, but I won't harp on that too much, since the fight isn't over and they might showcase cool things next chapter.
However, this isn't really an action centric chapter, so I am able to give all that a pass, since basically everything else I really really liked. Those last two chapters have been great and coming of the great couple of ones in the Zamasu arc finale (except the very last one), the manga has been very solid lately.
Hopefully, unlike the last arc, the middle is handled well in this one, since that started great as well, but everything between Trunks going back and Vegetto Blue nearly killed the story.

Anybody else think the ToP will replace Earths tournaments? For some reason I think Goku will talk Zen-Oh into restoring all universes and creating more so they can have a yearly ToP. I'm sure Zen-chan would be all willing for that. He has more of a personality in the manga doesn't he? (Uhhh... they!)
