You know, this reminds me: some people seem to get the idea that widescreen in general is a problem and villainize the 16:9 format like this whenever they criticize these sets.

It's not. More specfically, the problem here is the compromise of an original aspect ratio, which is this case just so happens to involve the cropping of a full screen television show to a widescreen image format. But some folks I've seen blow this out of proportion and go even further to say that "OMG WIDESCREEN IS ALL BAD", the same kind of folks that go out and pick up pan-and-scan full screen releases because they just plain don't like "black bars" on their 4:3 television screens.

Support one form of cropping and yet boycott another, even when they are both the exact same thing in principle? Oh yeah, that makes sense.

But anyway...

I used to hate widescreen too back then. But when the Back to the Future DVD's came out, I learned a whole lot and the difference between full and wide screen.

But for DBZ, there's no excuse!

My bad, I should just say I hate the cropping of anything. Widescreen format is decent, but I want my screen full of color, especially since I have a LCD HDTV. And yes, I do like not having two black bars taking up space on my system.

About my other post towards the people I quoted, you can go ahead and reply if you want, but I'm done on that subject. I'll just ignore everything, because I'm not going to help get this locked. I said what I needed.

I think the sets are pretty crappy.

There is no denying that, it's a flawed product, but I'm buying them because I have to, it's not the old days, FUNimation aren't going to listen to hardcore fans and videophiles, they can sell these things just fine with outright lies and misleading advertisements, people need to stop acting like if we stand up for ourselves it's going to make a fucking difference.

What personally pisses me off, is being told "FUNimation got you" "You fell for it" like I'm some dullard consumer who loves to be ripped off.
I live in Australia, our bilingual dvds kicked in (consistantly) during the Buu saga, I don't have another fucking option, what am I supposed to do?

Try to import out of print US releases?

Import the Dragonboxes?

I'm a student, to me money is that thing I have for twenty minutes, then have to give it away to stop from being crushed by debt, I simply don't have the cash to spend on something like that.

Now, people are biting each other over who's being smug and who's being elitist, regardless of their actual intentions, here's my take on it, We know the Dragonboxes are fantastic, we know they are the best possible way to view the show, but making asinine little jabs at someone every time they say they like the sets, does come off as smug.

I use the term loosely, but I guess you can say art is a subjective medium, it's in the eye of the beholder, some people prefer the way the sets look, that doesn't make them blind and it doesn't make them stupid, it means they like what they like, and who are you to tell them that they are wrong?, I personally don't like Funimation's sets, but as I stated earlier, it's my only option.

Anyway , this post wasn't an attack on anyone in particular, I was just voicing my frustrations, sorry if it comes off as a little touchy :)

It's called photoshop.

Anyhow, how much does Season 3 go for? Still haven't seen it around, and I know it's been released just about everywhere, but not here it seems.

$30 at Wal-Mart. Probably cheaper online.

Use the Zoom function instead of ruining releases for people who'd like the entire picture. Thank you.

Besides Corey's ever present and entertaining wit, this discussion is a horrible painful deja vu. Can't we just...not do this?

Two nights ago, I jumped in on Corey's behalf and wrote:
Toniofalcon wrote:All I ever wanted was complete seasons on DVD for an affordable price. Didn't really need or want the widescreen or remastering, but it doesn't really effect the quality of the series at it's core.

But if you really want to act smug because you have something that isn't available to most of the American public anyway, go ahead.

-To MVXV
Wow. Seriously, I have a real problem with people picking on Corey like this.

Never once has he been smug toward the people who buy these sets. Not. One. Time.

What he's smug about, if anything, is that he has the superior PRODUCT, wherein he is indeed 100% correct. These sets, while all that some of us may be able to afford (despite that even this isn't quite an "excuse," as the clear lesson in DragonBox vs. Season Sets is You Get What You Pay For), are laughable and an insult compared to what DBZ gets for treatment overseas, and the fact that people go so far out of the way to defend them on the most baffling levels ("the widescreen isn't that bad; it makes things look cinematic except for the part where you lose Nappa's head, LOL") is demonstration of the fact that they themselves likely know the facts and go out of their way to ignore them as part of some sort of pissing contest with the faction of consumers who voice legitimate complaints against the same product . . . or hell, just to convince themselves that they didn't make a flawed purchase. Ignorance runs incredibly deep in some aspects of the DBZ fandom.

Corey has never done anything but A) give us pure facts pertaining to the DragonBox releases and B) point out the unquestionable reasons why their American counterparts are flawed by comparison. The key word here is "comparison". When you mix the two things, you're gonna get something that some of us might not like-- it's called the truth, and it sucks. But Corey isn't responsible for that; FUNimation is.

~Da Lemmy
Given the turn this thread has taken, I can't help but blame myself for having jumped in to defend Corey two nights ago-- conceivably, it's what caused the skunk to spray here, and for that I am so very sorry.

I take full responsibility.

Any sort of salvage for this thread would be nice, but otherwise it's like what Mike was once known to say: if discussions about the Season Sets can't progress appropriately without an embarrassing de-evolution into bickering garbage like this, then perhaps they just shouldn't be allowed on this forum at all.

Agreed.

So... I think we should probably keep the topic open for the sole reason of having somewhere to debate the season sets, seeing as we've totally raped the third set of its virginity.

While everyone wants this thread to end, I'll end my posts with this one:
Drunken Master wrote:Dude, who are you? I wasn't even quoting you. Okay, since you want to get into my convo and make me type more, I'm going to show you that you don't know what's going on. You quoted me saying this - "Real Dragon Ball fans wouldn't be complaining about all this FUNimation stuff". Wow. Oh man, I'm such a tool. Can you read? My WHOLE quote was - "Real Dragon Ball fans wouldn't be complaining about all this FUNimation stuff, you should know better by now". As in FUNimation screws up everything all the time. Good job! Also, I hate wide-screen releases, so who are you? Do you know me or something?
Nice rant...

Your conversation? I did read your entire post last time. The issue is where the fuck do you get off telling anyone what a real fan should be doing? That's where I pretty much draw the line on getting involved.

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

That's about where I see it, too. It's when people starting calling each other out on who is and isn't a "real" fan.

By standards like that maybe I'm only a half fan because about half the time I'll watch the show in Japanese and the other half of the time I watch the Ocean dub of Seasons 1 and 2.

Hey, people attacked me out of nowhere, and I'm not going to sit back and watch people utterly and completely twist my words, then let others have the sloppy seconds with attacking me. People seem to use my words as if I was trying to start a war. I said real fans shouldn't be complaining about FUNi's mistakes, rather than Toei's mostly horrid animation to begin with. That's the way I see it, and just a opinion of mine that I threw in. Unlike most people, I read the manga before I watched the show (well, not the Buu saga) and I can't even compare the two, thus it's MY opinion. Well, whatever. You guys are saying you can't believe people were attacking you for talking crap about the season sets, but then I just come in and say they were decent, and they had nice bright colors, and bam. I get attacked for saying they are decent. Now all of a sudden I'm the bad guy.
