New Toriyama Interview in US Shonen Jump

Post by DaemonCorps » Mon Sep 24, 2007 7:35 pm

The Toriyama interview, titled "Interview with the Majin (Revisited)" is continued in the November issue of US Shonen Jump.

Here's the link.

The questions do a pretty good job of questioning things that Toriyama has always brought up in the series, like strong women (at least when they first appear), and characters that look weak but are actually the strongest character at that time. SJ finishes the interview, with the general question that's basically done to ensure that their complete interview wasn't a complete waste: "Is there a question you've always wanted to be asked?"

So yeah, enjoy.

Glad to hear that one of my favorite manga-ka is as forgetful as I am. Now I don't feel so alone.

Also, he likes Enter the Dragon. Enter the freakin Dragon! Awesome!

I liked his first interview too. It was interesting knowing that he always wrote things on the fly instead of planning things out.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

He stopped liking manga and anime after the age of 11?

I guess it is easier for one to create a manga than it is to get the funds to create a full-fledged summer blockbuster.

I like that he wrote on the fly. I find its actually more pleasing to write that way than to have it sit in your head too long and start growing mold 'n such.
On hiatus.

Don't forget Puipui! I immediately thought of the Xenomorph when I first saw him. It's very interesting that he's more into movies than his own profession. Makes me wonder if he'll ever think about going into that field.

I would have never guessed that one of Toriyama's favorites is a Tim Allen movie, but ok. I think it's cool that he's into film and it definatly reflects in the manga; all of the Hollywood references he makes are always fun.

Thanks for posting, DaemonCorps, I'm looking forward to this issue.

That movie was hilarious! Although it's kind of sad to see that he's not too passionate about manga. :( Nowadays, you have lots of artists that are way into it like Eiichiro Oda, and you can clearly see that passion translated into the page. Don't get me wrong, Toriyama is top tier but it's sad to read.

I think I've read past interviews where he's said he's a big Sci-fi fan. But Galaxy Quest gets people excited? Since when?

Well, I'd feel pretty honoured if he said he liked Jackie Chan in "The Myth". I did work on the DVD release of this movie, y'know?

Ditto. It was a fun movie, and not something I'd particularly expect to hear Toriyama cite as one of his favorite movies alongside a big classic like Alien.

All my friends hate that movie, and I really enjoyed it, I am now totally justified in my love of Galaxy Quest.

"This movie sucks!"

"But Akira Toriyama likes it!"

I think that;s probably why his is so unique, he wasn't copying anyone.

Another case of Toriyama-itis.
