Someone attempted to remaster a DBZ episode into [16:9]!!!

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Someone attempted to remaster a DBZ episode into [16:9]!!!

Post by PrincessVegeta » Sat Oct 06, 2007 11:51 pm

On youtube I found this member called jma128 has attempted to remaster one of the future episodes that Funimation will releace in thier Season 5 Remastered set and I must say that he's done a very good job on it.

See for yourself:

This is the original Funimation version

And here is the Remastered one done by jma128

I must say that he's done a really good job on it. What do you think? Also it would be strange seeing Goten and Gohans hair cut off by those black bars of death but then again I'm kinda used to it by now

Expect that if he took this off FUNi's singles releases, then he couldn't have accounted for the overscan thing. I know it doesn't affect it THAT much, but he's probably got a bit more cropped off here than there will ultimately be in the box set. Otherwise, yeah, it looks nice, and a good advance idea of what the Remastered version of this saga will look like.

Plus, the way things are shaping up, this chunk of the story will be in Season Six, not Five. Four is confirmed to be going up to the "revealing" of Cell, who will likely afterwards have Season Five all to himself. Maybe the Otherworld Budokai will be included, but I seriously doubt they'll included the Great Saiyaman saga, much less the Tenkaichi Budokai training after it.

You sure? Because if you noticed at the beginning he's somehow restored a huge chunk of the right side of the screen and a small bit at the left side, see here:

I didn't notice that. Still, I think FUNi will manage the cropping a little better.

Am I the only one that finds it a little weird that the dragonballs are in different positions on the English and Japanese title cards?
Just something I wanted to point out. I mean, I know they made changes, but isn't that a little ridiculous?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Could be the textless title card is also Dragonball-less as well, or something. I don't see them removing all the DBs just to add their own.

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

Sheesh the cropping does odd things. Am I the only one looking at Videl's left hand and reading more into that than need-be...? I mean, she was looking at Gohan in that, and the cropping kinda changes the intention of her sitting stance from my point of view. Kinda like shrouding Kui in mystery in the Namek saga flashback on the invisible ship after he'd already been introduced.

Well at least it's better than other lies floating around the youtube community like a members poorly done effort or remaster a scene when all they did was add Japanese BGM in it... like this:

Haha, that was terrible. You could still hear the Faulconer music.

Really? Maybe I'm missing something but how hard can it be to put two black bars over a video at the right resolution? No sarcasm here, just wondering.
It's all GOOD
