Episode #0097! VegettoEX and Meri record live from MangaNEXT 2007. During our panel ("DragonBall Manga: A History"), we discussed every release of DB manga from Japan and the US, along with interesting bits about specific censoring episodes the Viz translation has gone through over the years. Some brief talks about DB crossover manga, some parodies, and the future of the manga close out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the bizarro *ninety-seven* episodes, now.
As always, big special thanks go out to friends and family of the show that came out to see us... you're the bestest!

It was about time you had an episode dedicated to explaining the manga's history. Though I'm pretty sure that when you guys were talking about Viz's larger print graphic novels, you said that they didn't include Toriyama's little "About Me" stories. Well, I dunno about your guys' copies, but mine have 'em. The only difference is that the first volume for DBZ moved it to the back of the volume.
And yeah, I do think it's kinda creepy that we're reading those little entries as if they were just written
.
Also, you briefly mention the Daizenshuu in the episode, but don't really go into much detail about it. I know they're not the actual manga, but since they're guides to them, I thought you would've gone into a little explanation on them.
As for what to expect from Japan DB manga-wise, I'd like to say a re-release of the Daizenshuu. It's happened with the manga and the ani-manga, so why not? Also, it's not like the fandom's simply stopped, so they could also update some of the books with new goings-on in the DB fanbase. The same could be said for Viz; they've already released art books and anime/manga guides for One Piece, Naruto, and Kenshin, so I don't see why FUNi and Viz can't just team up and allow a translated version of the Daizenshuu.
And, out of curiosity, who attended the panel? Based on what was said, it sounded like only a handful of people were there in comparison to the other panel you did a while back with the Dragon Ball trivia game thing.
Anyways, awesome podcast (you're almost in the triple digits!).

Very awesome episode. Wish I was there!
Too bad that it's very hard to come by the old issues of Weekly Jump featuring Dragon Ball. The only bet is off Yahoo Auctions Japan, and unless you live in Japan, it's gonna cost you.
Some pictures I dug up:

Very cool. I'm also happy to say that I somewhat own a large amount of Dragon Ball manga history. I own atleast one volume of every "release" if you will that you mentioned besides the original, larger American releases and the ani-manga. Hooray for me

Very good episode. That panel seemed very relaxed making for good discussion like a normal episode. EX, you said you knew most everyone, so that probably contributed to it.
I'm more informed now. I'm definatly going to pay attention to the part of the book where it says which edition it is before I buy it.
I have one of those Viz comic book issue format ones, I think my brother gave it to me. It's a DBZ one that covers when Goku shows up on Namek and fight Reccoom. I also have one of the large format "graphic novels" and a few Shonen Jump issues featuring DBZ chapters including the "Trunks: The Story" chapter with some glossy full color pages. I'm definatly going to hold on to all of it.

This is an extremely funny, yet educational episode. I have actually seen the spread-out of everyone flippin' off Cell. I thought the spread was a fan-made image, but it has been confirmed to be official in this episode. I've got to stop missing out on these conventions!
kvon is an alternative name to Kevin
Regarding the whole Toys R Us incident, it was actually because the mother caught a glimpse of Bulma offering Goku to cop a feel in exchange for the Dragon Ball. Though like any parent who feels they must leap before thinking, especially when they go apeshit over things they bought for their kids without having knowledge of, she didn't quite read the part where Goku then says "Why would I wanna feel your dirty butt?"
Great episode, btw.

Yup. I was really surprised by the small audience (MangaNEXT itself is very small), but the more intimate setting was nice. ^^ Uh, there were less than a dozen people in attendance. My cousin and I went, and we sat next to the Great Saiya-man cosplayer who was one of the contestants on the DBZ Trivia panel at AnimeNEXT. She and I probably knew of the others from AN.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:Yea, Iam a bit confused about that... As always, I'm blown away by the knowledge and professionalism that Mike and Meri (and of course Julian, who was there in spirit) bring with them to these panels. I've come to expect it from listening to the Podcast and from seeing, in person, the way in which they hold themselves, but I'm always kind of *struck* by them...
Ehhh, done being a fangirl now. ^^;; Great panel, Mike and Meri~!
The Resident Tenshinhan Fangirl.
That was quite awesome. I recall buying those bigger versions of the tankobon for like $15 back in the day; and I remember how I enjoyed the early Viz volumes that tried to individualize the characters' speech/dialogue. It was so cool.
I have:
-some japanese tankobon
-some kanzenban
-some of both the bigger and smaller Viz copies
I stopped buying Viz's Shounen Jump after they took dbz out of it. If you want to talk about extreme marketing, Viz has GIGANTIC super-advertisements for Naruto in BOTH Borders and FYE at Quakerbridge Mall at the moment. (*Was up there earlier today*)
Their advertisements for the series in these stores though are actually so in-your-face that I find I'm put off by them rather than intregued.
It makes me think of those "Head-On" ads. >_O
I actually never remembered seeing advertisements of that scale for dbz at all. Then again all they really needed to grab my attention in the first place was having a ridiculously convenient 5pm weekday timeslot. XD
P.S: NOOOOOO! I have to wait til next week to get your reactions to the live action movie announcements!! I waited all week in excitement for a well-thought-out Mike rant! TT___TT

On hiatus.
Is that Kochi-Kame manga available to read or download anywhere? I heard about it back when I joined the forums and haven't been able to find it anywhere.

He (Gohan) is weaker. He has the fighting spirit of a wet noodle soaked in water until it barely resembles a noodle. A pebble is tougher than Gohan, because you could conceivably trip on a rock and stub your toe, while Gohan would yield like so much melted pudding. Vanilla pudding. Because he's too pansy-ass to have a strong flavor if he was pudding. Pure water has more flavor than hypothetical Gohan-pudding.

To anyone who went to MangaNEXT: I was the girl with the cat ears and tail, and the pink teddy bear. :3
I was late for the panel! DX The room was really hard to find. I was told by staff on the first floor that it was upstairs, and then I was told by staff on the second floor that it was downstairs, and I couldn't find it. @_@; Luckily a staffer was tryin to find the place himself, and we ran around and asked people around the registration table. And finally, we found it. w00t!
Yay, I finally said hi to you guys, and you were really nice and cool. (Not that I didn't think that already, but I'm very shy.) This was the first con where I lived there, and I got used to grabbing random people for games of Werewolf. (I spent more time playing Werewolf than doing everything else I did at the con, including sleeping. The Werewolf people are my new family. <3)
The panel was really good and I agree with DaemonCorps that it was about time. I don't have much of the manga, so you pretty much taught you everything about the manga releases in an hour. This made me happy.
I LOVED the Manga in AMVs panel. I'm so happy I skipped eating and went there.
Too bad all the cool things were going on at the same time, otherwise you would have filled the room faster. I think the MMV panel was one of the cooler things, though.

COSPLAYER ALERT! Willo and Sophie as the Jinzouningen. (Click image for full version.)
There was also a Future Trunks running around Saturday night, but I was too tired to overcome shyness and ask him for a photo. D:

There was maybe ten people at the panel, and not all at the same time. Probably because the panel was in a bad place (took me fifteen minutes to find it), and MangaNEXT is a really small con, probably less than 800 people (although I suck at estimations, I was there all weekend).Tanooki Kuribo wrote:Yea, Iam a bit confused about that... One of the things that made me not renew my subscription to Shonen Jump was their advertising. Slightly different from the kind you're talking about, but it's still really annoying and in your face.
It's those damned annoying writings on the bottom of EVERY PAGE that tells you to buy the graphic novels in every single Jump issue. The first few times it was funny cause it wasn't on every page. Now it's like "HEY! LIKE THIS? GO BUY IT IN GRAPHIC NOVEL FORMAT!" Turn the page. "DID YOU NOT READ WHAT WE SAID?! BUY THE GN, DAMMIT!"

Agreed-- I hate those stupid ads. Shonen Jump used to be decent-- now I'm only getting it for YuYu Hakusho and One Piece, since they took Shaman King and DBZ out. I'll probably end my subscription in the near future when YYH is done.
As for the podcast episode, I loved it. I'm someone who got into the series through the manga so this was awesome to hear ^_^ As for the crap Z graphic novels that pain everyone, I just cross out the offensive translations and write in what it's supposed to be (Majin Buu, Mr. Satan, etc.). It makes it a little better, at least.

To answer Meri's question about filler in the redundantly redundant ani-manga of the series...it looks like they just skip over it. I flipped through either the first or the second book the other day at the bookstore, and Goku's journey through Snake Way is pretty much the way it is in the original manga. Meaning no HELL, no Princess Snake, and no Gregory. Which is pretty funny, actually, since this little cricket just suddenly appears out of nowhere with no explanation.
As far as name changes in the English version goes...didn't Vegeta's Saibamen get called something else in the English version?

Ugh...yes! I think they were called "Cultivars" or something like that..? That change made absolutely no sense.
Wasn't "saibamen" a play on something? I thought they just essentially translated it.SonEric84 wrote:Ugh...yes! I think they were called "Cultivars" or something like that..? That change made absolutely no sense.

Hmm, I dunno. But calling them cultivars after hearing saibamen in the series was just kind of stupid in my opinion.
The saibai in サイバイマン comes from the same word which means "cultivation; culture; raising; growing; growth." Saibai suru means "to cultivate."SSj Kaboom wrote:Wasn't "saibamen" a play on something? I thought they just essentially translated it.
So Viz wasn't off the mark in naming those little green men. ^^ ..."Cultivars" just sounds kind of funky, and it's another example of one of those odd translations/quirks from the early DB manga days..
