Not sure if this is true, but I heard that in the manga of Dragon Ball when Tien went to fight King Piccolo he really decided at the last minute NOT to use the Mafuba and instead chose to fight Piccolo head on?? Of course in the anime they have him use the Mafuba but Drum (was he even in the manga?) interferes with it letting Piccolo step back and blast the rice cooker he was supposed to be trapped in.

Yes, that's true, sort of. Tenshinhan didn't use it in the manga because he noticed the Denshi Jar was cracked. But he does fight Drum, until Gokuu shows up to save him.doppleganger wrote:Not sure if this is true, but I heard that in the manga of Dragon Ball when Tenshinhan went to fight King Piccolo he really decided at the last minute NOT to use the Mafuba and instead chose to fight Piccolo head on?? I thought that was kind of stupid for the anime to change that, really, since Tenshinhan should have died if he successfully used Mafuuba, the way Kamesennin did.

Exactly. The Lecherous Muten Roshi wrote:Having Trunks save the day like that makes him seem more like the hero he is now, and emphasizes how the Future World is safe now that Trunks is around.

No, no...I was agreeing with you. I know how the internet can confuse people, just because the context of only text. It's happen to me before in a certain thread many times actually.
No, you said it sucked, I was only saying it was more than just sucky, it was god-awful, disgusting, sickening, horrific, and ect. lol. Man, I seriously hated that part, it was ridiculous.
Yeah, so Tenshinhan used the mafuba on Drum, which...makes no sense at all. Silly anime.

Actually, having Tenshinhan use the Mafuba against Drum* was one of my favorite changes made in the anime, aside from the inconsistency in Tenshinhan not dieing after using it. The way they did it in the anime just seemed more satisfying to me, I guess. It just seemed so pointless to go through the whole subplot of Tenshinhan learning the Mafuba, only to have him unable to use it at the last minute for a really stupid reason. I mean, didn’t he check the jar before heading off? He didn’t bring a spare? And after finding this out, he decides to fight Piccolo anyway, knowing full well that he can’t win? Why not just run away, get a new jar, then come back? This must be why Tenshinhan ended up getting relegated to such a minor role. He’s clearly too stupid to save the world.
*Technically, Tenshinhan used the Mafuba to trap Piccolo, but Drum jumped in the way. Then Piccolo zapped the jar to pieces before Drum could be trapped.

I have to agree with everyone on Kuririn's first death. Fantastic in the anime. Mind you, the manga version is OK, but I positively LOVE that dead-silent multi-shot of everyone's faces as they stare at Kuririn before he goes off to retrieve Goku's Nyoibo and DragonBall.
Of course, there's a part in the episode after that, where Goku becomes furious and asks Bulma if she has the Dragon Radar. Then, he rushes past her, snatching the Radar from her on the way. Now, here, in the anime, Bulma watches Goku as he takes the Radar... but there's a nuance in the manga that I really liked: Bulma isn't even paying attention when Goku takes the Radar - she's staring off into space despairingly in the midst of her tears. I really think the anime should have presented it that way... but I digress. This is supposed to be about what the anime does RIGHT.
But going back to that first episode, there's an earlier scene where Goku and Tenshinhan are lying in the street from their great fall that ends the Tournament. Goku rouses himself from the ground and sees Kuririn standing there smiling, and then the rest of the Tournament spectators crowd around him and Tenshinhan, and raise them up on their shoulders, the two competitors shake hands with the crowd cheering that that was the greatest fight they've ever seen, and Roshi telepathically tells Tenshinhan "Welcome to the good side... this is how it feels." Throw in the fact that they use the gorgeous music from the end of the first DragonBall movie ("Legend of Shen Long", known as "Curse of the Blood Rubies" on this side of the pond), and I was bawling like a baby. The manga, on the other hand, cuts straight from the announcement of Tenshinhan's win to the group standing around wondering what to do next.
Not going to mention my own thoughts on the Fake Namek episodes...

Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I really wish people would stop saying the words "fake Namek." It is forcing me to recall it. This seriously disrupts my calm and makes it hard for me to objectively praise anything filler-related.
I will second most of Kunzait's initial post. After reading the topic title I was actually going to say most of that (analysis of Vegeta's actions and everything) but now it would just be redundant.
So how about...
The Bardock Special as a whole.
And I do agree on Gohan's death/Trunks' transformation. It had more emotional impact, and gives Trunks more of an excuse to have been so ineffective beforehand. Unfortunately, due to anime Future Trunks having more trouble with SSJ than the main timeline's, this also sparked all kinds of fan-theories on the potency of SSJ seed (that I could have done without).
I disagree on the Goku vs Kid Buu fight (but agree on the Majin Vegeta fight). Granted, Goku's first run at Buu was a cool scene. I just think it makes far more sense in the manga. Goku rocking Buu at SSJ2, his two depowerments, Vegeta attacking Buu without transforming... meh.
You know what was cool though? Vegeta's first fight with Zarbon in the anime. I also like the beginning of Z. I first saw it back in the Saban days. Then I see it in Japanese and they had cut out the whole thing with Gohan. Personally I thought that was cute, had a bit of the lighthearted feel that gave the first series its charm, and was a good introduction to Goku's son. He is pretty integral to the rest of the series, after all. Then I read it in the manga, and it was like black and white "Arrival."
Another one I like is that Dodoria kills Cargo in the anime. It flows with the scene better. Dodoria's tasked with killing all of them, he takes out the smalles kid to emphasize what prick he is, and then he moves in for the rest. In the manga, it is just so random when Freeza does it. I'll agree with what was said earlier- the space orphans served as a much better intro into Freeza's evil than his randomly firing a ki blast.

To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.
TheJoo87 mentioned it earlier, but I believe it bears repeating. In my opinion, the best filler episode EVER was the drivers license episode. Yeah, it ended in a cheesy, predictable, American-Superhero fashion (saving children in a schoolbus or something along those lines), but the very notion of Goku and Piccolo trying to get their drivers' linceses is genius. Vegeta, at some point, also got his license, as he is seen driving Bra around in GT. That would have made the episode even better: having Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo attempting quite unsuccessfully to get their licenses. I know Vegeta was in space at the time, but I still feel it would have been a really funny episode. Either way, no inclusion in the manga because it is, after all, merely filler, but quality filler all the same.

As amusing as that ep is, I have a problem with filler's inconsistent representation of everyone's power. On the one hand, Goku is constantly portrayed as being more badass than he should be (and that's saying a lot), and characters later in the series and in GT seem to like rushing an opponent without transforming. There are also numerous skirmishes where characters fare ok against enemies who can handle them easily within the main story.xzero wrote:TheJoo87 mentioned it earlier, but I believe it bears repeating. Then you get things like the driving episode. The bus scene at the end really shouldn't have taken characters like Goku and Piccolo more than 10 seconds to resolve. And that's a generous 10 seconds. Another example is the #18/Yamcha/Muten/Videl/Chi-Chi vs T-Rex scene in the Buu Saga. That scenario progressing past the 5 second mark was all kinds of unnecessary.

Haha, yeah, after five minutes of doing nothing, doesn't Yamcha then realize..."Hey! I'm super-powerful!" as he makes a energy ball the size of a golf ball and throws it at the t-rex exploding it instantly...WAIT, I think that was the big fish part. Either way, it's the same thing. Goku caught huge fish all the time, as a kid. Yet none of them could.Onikage725 wrote: Another example is the #18/Yamcha/Muten/Videl/Chi-Chi vs T-Rex scene in the Buu Saga. Haha that had to be the fish part. The T-Rex was slain when Muten farted in its face. I believe there was also a moment of intense drama when Bulma's aircar is destroyed. Considering that 18, Yamcha, and Videl can fly and Chi-Chi and Muten could survive the fall if it came to it... I was certainly feeling the danger.Drunken Master wrote:Haha, yeah, after five minutes of doing nothing, doesn't Yamcha then realize..."Hey! *ahem*
Back on topic though, I thought the filler in the 23rd Budokai fights were good, just little things that made the fights longer. They didn't look bad like the Freeza saga counterparts.

I don't like :
+ In the, "Cell Games Saga" Goku is fighting Cell for around 3 episodes and we get a glimpse of how strong Goku is. As they fight, we see Cell struggling against Goku when Goku's power level isn't nearly as powerful as Cell's.
+ Remember that Gohan is at least 1,000,000 or so more powerful then Goku. So then why is it that when Gohan fights Cell, his "fight" seems much more weaker then the one between Goku and Cell? Its bs, man, it makes Gohan look weaker then Goku. =[
+ I just recently bought the Dragonball Z Manga Volumes 17 and 18 and I enjoyed the pages where Gohan says to himself "That's odd that can't be my dad's full strength," during Goku's power up at Korin's tower and "Why is everyone impressed?" lines in the manga. In the anime, I never seemed to notice those lines that made Gohan seem more stronger then Goku. (Although I have to admit I have never seen the Japanese version, I am simply basing this on the Dub.)
+ I just hated that scene of the anime. The fight between Goku and Cell was extended so that it would appeal more to the fans, but honestly I would've liked it more if they had spent more of their budget on the Super Saiya-jin Gohan 2 fight with Cell. Doesn't anyone feel that the anime version of this scene made Goku seem stronger then Gohan (before Gohan transformed into Super Saiya-jin 2)?
But thats just me

He is weaker. He has the fighting spirit of a wet noodle soaked in water until it barely resembles a noodle. A pebble is tougher than Gohan, because you could conceivably trip on a rock and stub your toe, while Gohan would yield like so much melted pudding. Vanilla pudding. Because he's too pansy-ass to have a strong flavor if he was pudding. Pure water has more flavor than hypothetical Gohan-pudding.RockerJeri wrote:Remember that Gohan is at least 1,000,000 or so more powerful then Goku. .... I think I lost where I was going there.
