Discussion specifically regarding the "refreshed" TV version of DBZ created in Japan for its 20th anniversary, including individual threads for each episode.
I suspect some wires might've gotten crossed somewhere, because I'm not sure how this qualifies as an "expansion" of the block, unless they mean they're going to actually air something at 4AM and just aren't saying what yet.

Son Goku wrote:We're at the point now where most of the block is pulling in ratings comparable to or worse than what One Piece got.
And like One Piece, most (or all) of the block is old content that everyone's seen. Why would anyone take time out of their weekend to rewatch something they've seen and maybe own on home video, especially so late at night ?
This worked years ago when TV was the only way to see these shows but now we're able to see them the minute they air in Japan so if they want to survive then they'll need to find a way to get new content and air it subbed the same week it airs in Japan.
Dragon Ball Super, One Piece, Boruto, My hero academia and Black clover are among the popular shows that if mixed with old ones would give them a huge boost in ratings if aired the same week they air in Japan.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
Supposedly airing content that requires subtitles kills ratings even harder than just airing old stuff that everyone's already seen before, so I wouldn't expect that to ever happen.
Best hope would probably be to get broadcast rights to some of Funimation's simuldubs so they're only a few weeks/a month behind the Japanese airing, instead of years. Even there, though, simuldubs are kind of the big selling point for Funimation's own streaming service, so I imagine TV broadcast rights wouldn't be cheap.
sintzu wrote:Why would anyone take time out of their weekend to rewatch something they've seen and maybe own on home video, especially so late at night ?
Well, if we're strictly speaking about home video, that only really applies to DBZ Kai, Shippuden, and Outlaw Star. The rest of the block is either shows whose dubs are being heard for the first time or (in the case of Attack on Titan season 2) just not yet on BD/DVD. Unfortunately yeah, the appeal of a brand new dub doesn't seem to be enough anymore.
And like Theophrastus said, airing subtitled content is out of the question. There's a reason why only specialty channels like Turner Classic Movies air subtitled content, it's ratings suicide for most networks.

Toonami is already dying so they might as well try it.
Jason DeMarco said that Toonami is not going anywhere and they have stuff plan for the next five years. I think the re-tellings of BOG and ROF may have turn people off from watching Super. I hope the Future Trunks saga next year will bring in higher ratings.
Hellspawn28 wrote:Jason DeMarco said that Toonami is not going anywhere and they have stuff plan for the next five years.
They probably do but if the ratings don't improve then chances are they won't last that long. I hope they find some way to get things back on track cause the better they do the better anime does in the west.

One thing to remember, and I always forget to bring it up, is that Toonami almost always has 3 or 4 shows on the Top 25, this might not seem so with the numbers of Total Viewers but its doing well enough to have that honor.

FUNi are simuldubbing most shows a season anyway so that isn't even a problem (They are dubbing 14 shows with more to announced for fall anime season!), but as far as I am aware only Space Dandy and AoT S2 simuldubs have made it on Toonami (and the former even aired before Japan!).

Dimension W was another Funi simuldub that premiered on Toonami, likely because it was the first (only?) anime that Funimation was on the production committee for and they wanted to get maximum exposure through a TV airing.

That's...a really weird bump for Naruto Shippuden compared to last week. People specifically tuned in to see the conclusion of a three-part filler arc, and then changed the channel once it was done.
