yet he contributed to the plot way more than tien.
Tenshinhan's lack of contributions wasn't due to uselessness. It was because Tenshinhan stayed out of the way. He's a very solitary (with the exception of his best friend) person.

Here's one, the person taking or given credit for "starting" the over 9000 meme doesn't deserve any credit whatsoever. That phrase was popular in the fandom well before memes became a thing.

Memes became a thing in like 2005, they're just infintely more widespread and popular now.

I suppose it make sense why tien took the backseat.Who was the person that created over 9000 meme.

Memes are as old as communication, they just weren't referred to as such until fairly recently.

I was told the meme could be traced to a particular person. I call bullshit on that one. It's more likely someone just took credit for it and it stuck, but it wasn't too long after the Ocean dub episode aired that people kept bringing up that moment. It sticks out, so it's not a surprise that it would become an internet meme. The only real difference between now and the late 90s is how ubiquitous the internet has become.

There was indeed a YouTube video that led to the meme's meteoric rise to fame. Prior to that it was something only known to people who watched DBZ, not something the general populace could recognize.

Tenshinhan hasn't done shit for anybody. He's a pretty useless character outside of the 22nd tournament, and I guess 23rd.

C'mon, him kikoho-ing Cell into the ground was what allowed 18 to escape, and it would've been effective had it not been for, well, you know, Vegeta...

I'm not sure what brought it on either, but I think that Mike said it best a while back -- something about an ebb and flow in the appreciation/popularity of a particular arc every so often. The Boo arc has been in this flow the past year or so (appearing at or near the top of many rankings), while at that very same time the Cell arc is put down way more often than not when it used to be received a bit better by the consensus a few years back (it's a conspiracy I tell ya!). Also, more people seem to have taken more an appreciation with the original Red Ribbon arc in recent times than I had seen in past years.

My theory/assumption regarding the Boo arcs more recent positive reception, is that Super has had more look at the Boo arc from a somewhat different perspective. When there's something else to compare the Boo arc with, little touches about things such as characterization and impactful sound effects that hadn't been as noticed before are made more visible/audible. Many are appreciating more the attention to detail in previous arcs (and better general execution of action, tension, and comedy with Boo) when stacking it up with the current series, amongst a variety of other reasons.
My theory is somewhat similar, but it's a little more on the cynical side. I think people saw the more child-friendly, frivolous tone of Super and went "You know what? The Buu arc wasn't so bad , after all."

Vegeta and his ego have f*cked up a LOT of otherwise easily-dealt-with things in the series...

And again, I call BS on this. It was known within the fandom and as the net grew, DBZ (anime in general) grew, so did that phrase. It reminds me of this scene from Friends

Phoebe: Ooh, Atlantic City! Oh, that's a great plan! Who's plan was that?
Joey: Mine!
Ross: Wait! It was my plan.
Joey: Nooo, I said we needed a new plan.
Ross: And, I came up with Atlantic City.
Joey: Which, is the new plan!

The point was never to deal with it easily, otherwise they wouldn't have let Dr. Gero finish the cyborgs to begin with.

Also because as far as the original dialogue goes, Freeza was a matter of Vegeta`s pride for having been submissive to him for years, not necessarily because he actually cared that much about his planet.

But it's not like Vegeta murdered people against his will.

Agreed. His beef with Freeza was more a power dinamic than anything else. He wasn`t a better person, he just wanted to be the one on his seat.

I don't think people forget who Vegeta was, but given that he becomes a protagonist (not the same thing as a hero) and he goes through a redemption arc, it can be easy to see Vegeta as a victim and want to see him get revenge.

Haven't been on this for a while. Is saying Jiren is an awful character an unpopular opinion? Because he is.

Not really. A lot of fans think his personality is too dry in the anime. The manga fleshes out his characterization much more from the get-go.

At this point, he is barely a character, he is just an obstacle. That could change eventually but, yeah, right now that isn't an unpopular opinion at all.

Ultimate Gohan at the beginning never worked for me. The theme of Dragon Ball is training and Gohan just sitting there and Old Kai just dances around him really undermines it
