I'm sure this has brought up before, but here goes.
I have seen many a screenshot of the Dragonball Z movies in a widescreen format, yet all the FUNimation releases and Pioneer and so forth so on are in standard format.
Now before I like got all "grr need widescreen" I realized that there is no disclaimer on these releases about being formatted to fit the screen. And while I know these aren't big time releases one would expect that.
So I guess my question is, were these films' frames actually extended from the Japanese theatrical releases with a method similar to what they did in Terminator 2, or were they actually truthfully pan and scanned?
It would pain me to learn that all these "uncut" DVDs I own have lost a lot of the picture, but I guess it isn't too bad since the transfer never bugged me before.
STILL if there is more to these movies I'd like to know.

Look at DaizEX's rumor section. He covers this there. In a nutshell, you actually get MORE picture on the American releases. In Japan, they more or less slapped big black bars on the picture, covering what was behind them.Mugenmidget wrote:I'm sure this has brought up before, but here goes.

Ah I can't believe I missed that after what was a thorough *aka click what I wanted* examination of the site on my part.B-kun wrote:Look at DaizEX's rumor section. He covers this there. ANYWAYS, it seems they have chosen the method that Batman Beyond, Terminator 2, and Air Force One has utilized.
I'm glad because this makes the film enjoyable in both ratios, because while it may have been intended for another you won't lose out on the more square television.
Thanks for your help!

Unless you have a widescreen TV, as is becoming increasingly common over here.Mugenmidget wrote:I'm glad because this makes the film enjoyable in both ratios, because while it may have been intended for another you won't lose out on the more square television.
Not that it bothers me. I tend to watch most TV in widescreen anyway, even on a 4:3. Once you've gotten used to 16:9, the old TV format seems horribly squashed.
