Re: Kanzenshuu Members Favorite Series.
1. Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z 1986-1996 - I am one those who views DB & DBZ as one Series, which its technical is, since the Manga original is just one series. So i would consider this to be the original Anime Series. Its a very faithfull adaption of its Manga couterpart with added content inbetween, and the bigger alterations from its source material aren´t that much. Its also the series I was introduced to Dragon Ball, back when I was 4 years old, when the first Episode of DB was broadcasted in Germany in 1999. It enhanced Toriyamas manga story greatly, and there are also many fillerstories I like. It later gets too dragged out but that only really becomes a problem from the midsection onwards. Nostalgia is certainly not its only strengh, the probably best thing about Toriyamas original story is how it changes over time, not just the series itself with its themes and content but also its characters change and grow with the passing of each storyarc. How the older characters are used later one is another story but atleast most of them got more screentime and better showings in filler content of this Anime Version. Not all filler content is that good, and the Manga might have the better pacing especially in later parts of the story but there are also parts in the Manga that were lacking something and which the Anime version impproved upon, so both have their benefits and shortcommings. It also has a great soundtrack by Shunsuke Kikuchi who composed many memorable tracks from the beginning to the end. I also prefer the original version of the Z portion to Kai, which I will tell you more about below. I would recommed this original series the way it was made as a starting point for newcormers with all its strenghs and weaknesses.
2. Dragon Ball Super 2015-ongoing - DB Super has its problems but also its good stuff. It has nice slice of life Episodes but can´t really compare to the storytelling of the original series. It gives some non Saiyan fighters good moments but still milkes out the Saiyajins & their transformations too much. Its original stories have good ideas but aren´t always executed that well. Also the powerscaling isen´t always clear and some "bullshit" powerups could get some better explanations or even any at all. Also some characters could be handlet better (like Buu in Universe 6 Tournament, Tenshinhan in the Tournament of Power or Yamcha & Chiatzu who are excluded from fights). But its actually really nice that someone like Muten Roshi did return to the fighting team and can even do something against an enemy like Frost. That shows how much potential Super has to make the Humans useful fighters again, but it sadly dosen´t use it always. Still i do like DB Super for the good stuff it has done and time will tell if it will improove upon its shortcommings. The soundtrack Norihito Sumitomo is good but can´t really compare to Kikuchi. Its also a shame that Chala-head-chala is the only old track that got remixed.
3. Dragon Ball GT 1996-1997 - GT is the Series I should rewatch some time to form a better opinion of it. I watched and recorded it on VHS back in 2006 when it was broadcasted in Germany, but I never really rewatched it in its entirety as far as i remember. I did rewatch some parts of it in the Internet but not the whole thing. It was fine by me back then, but i did got to know its bad reputation later in the Internet but also saw people who didn´t found it that bad. Also the German Dub i recorded is incomplete and misses many scenes and even whole episodes thanks to the grazy censorship RTL II Animes had at the time. I will one day buy the UK DVD boxes and watch the whole Series that way. What I can still say about it now is, that it had some good ideas who could benefit from better execution and that it might have better storytelling than DB Super, but that it also could use the character that aren´t Goku better. And the fact that guys like Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha just have cameo apparences is nothing but wasted potential. Its soundtrack by Akihito Tokunaga is also good but its again a shame that none of Kikuchis music got remixed in his style.
4. Dragon Ball Kai 2009-2011 + Dragon Ball Kai the Final chapters 2014-2015 - I only have seen parts of DB Kai and i have no intention to watch it. I cannot judge it properly as its own thing because of this, but as an remaster it really is a disapointment. Its idea of a filler reduced version in not bad on paper, but it turned out to be only a milking out of the Z era. And as someone who considers DB & DBZ as one series, which the Manga original undenyable is, there is no excuse for leaving out the pre Z stuff out of this "faithfull to Manga" version of the Anime. And the fact that it was cancled in 2011 and only continued in 2014 because of Torikos failling (if i´m right) really calls cashgrab in my eyes. That Kikuchis soundtrack was kicket out completly and replaced by a complete different soundtrack by Kenji Yamamoto, lacking any of the original themes was pretty much the biggest middlefinger Kai had to offer. Just imagine if a Final Fantasy game would have been remade with a complete different score, that would create a shitstorm. The later Kikuchi replacement score brought atleast some pieces back, but it were only the ones from the Z era and not even from all packages. And when Kai TFC rolled around, Kikuchis work was again replaced and this time by Suitomo, which music i can tolerate in Super and the new Movies but not here. So Kai dosen´t have a cohesive Soundtrack, you either have two different scores for the two portions of this incomplete remaster or you have a limited amount of the original bgm with the wrong placement in the first portion and the different soundtrack in the second one. If you compare that to the original DB & DBZ which had a cohesive soundtrack over its entirety that grows over time but also used some older pieces later, just shows what Kai lacks. Its true that Kai improoves upon the pacing of the Z part, but if that is be the only reason to do such an remaster than it would have been enough to just recut the Frieza, Cell and Buu Arcs. A filler reduced marathon mode in a potential Bluray realese could achieve the same thing, and would left the original score untouched. Even though I didn´t saw Dragon Ball Recut, the recuts IAmTheMilkMan makes practically are what DB Kai should have been and are/will be the better product in my eyes. Dragon Ball Kai was the opportunity to reunite DB & DBZ back into one series, what a real faithfull adaption should be. But they fucked it up and just rehashed the popular parts of the series. So in that case DB Kai is just a remaster with incomplete story and non cohesive soundtrack, and whats the point of a new Version where you have to watch a big chunk of the old version to view the full story? My only recommendation would be for Z only fans but they might complain that it dosen´t have Faulconners soundtrack.

Re: Kanzenshuu Members Favorite Series.
Right now it's a toss between Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Super as my favourite. Love the adventure aspect of DB and seeing Goku who he becomes and DBS is just pure pure fun the characters and their interactions absolutely nailed on.
Z is absolute slog to sit through at times like super sloggy. Kai 1.0 is better but then Buu Kai is total disaster as it keeps the basis of the terrible Z adaptation of Buu arc of the Manga as well retaining a lot of filler and inconsistent remastering process.
GT I just don't like period, bottom line it's just boring and then attempts at a "deep and emotional" ending that doesn't work and not fitting for DB at all.

I don't like the cropping, but the series does move considerably better than Z even with more filler than I'd like.Buu Kai is total disaster as it keeps the basis of the terrible Z adaptation of Buu arc of the Manga as well retaining a lot of filler and inconsistent remastering process.
My favorite DB series is the original DB.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

It's a shame that the Majin Boo arc isn't part of the original Kai series but rather it was brought up on its own, as its own series which in comparison to Kai Saiyan-Cell arc, it's nowhere near as good but it's watchable.
If anyone's wondering why Super is at the bottom of the barrel, I honestly never liked the show although I enjoyed the Dr. Slump crossover episode.

The soundtrack is subjectively terrible though some people like it and the green tint has been discussed heavily as well. I can't stand the original product itself but with some tweaks (green tint fix + Kikuchi music) here and there by fans, it's actually pretty good. As for the cropping, I'm not really upset about it since it's done in a way that we didn't lose much detail whereas FUNimation croppings are downright horrendous.coola wrote:Final Chapters is absolute worst Modern Dragon Ball series so far, 16:9, ugly yellow tint, worse soundtrack, and barely anything cut from Z version of Buu Saga.

Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.
