Your Top 3 Super Moments of 2017 (Sub and Dub)

Post by mecha3000 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 12:11 pm

Now, that we have had a constant stream of DB Super episodes from 2017 - What are your favorite and most memorable moments from all of these episodes? Just thought of posting this in the absence of any new Super episodes (both dub and sub) for this weekend. Your top three can include both the sub and dub if you don't mind spoilers as this year was the English dub's debut (other dubs are welcome). Feel free not to include the dub if you want, just wanted to be inclusive of it. Mine consist of:

SUB

1. #17 - This dude has been badass ever since he first debuted in Super. I've always wondered why he never continued to appear after the Cell Arc. Then, he made his awesome Super debut with his fight against Goku. The use of #17's energy barrier has also been a highlight and has separated him from the other U7 characters. It's also brought spotlight to a new useful ability in the DB universe that only androids seem to utilize. It's almost like #17 uses his barrier in the same way Goku and the others can manipulate their ki, which I find unique and interesting. Both Piccolo and Vegeta had their respective times in the franchise to prove their worth as heroes after their villainous appearances (from the Saiyan Arc to Buu Arc), but #17 never got that. Now with Super - #17 is becoming a breakout character (appearing as the 3rd character on merchandise featuring SSB Goku and Vegeta in Japan) similar to those two and I love it. Would love to see him become a mainstay to represent androids in the same way Piccolo represents Namekians, but I doubt it will happen.

2. Ultra Instinct - Sure to be many fans' favorite moment, I gotta' include this one. Seeing Goku unlock this new transformation/ability was a historic event for DB fans across the world. To be honest, I don't really care for God or Blue transformations because it's not really clear what's special about them other than allowing Goku to fight a god. And let's be honest, Blue has pretty much become what Frieza said, "Super Saiyan with blue hair dye" in terms of being the Super Saiyan that modern kid DB fans in Japan associate with. But Ultra Instinct changed the game and for the first time, made fans feel like they did when Goku when Super Saiyan for the first time back on Namek. In that way, Ultra Instinct has now created a new iconic moment for the DB franchise and it feels earned because it was built up.

3. Anilaza - Alright, formerly this spot was occupied by Barry Kahn (I know, right?) but even though I love Barry Khan's inclusion in Super as a nod to Z: There's no one character who has truly reminded me of Super's awesome callbacks like Anilaza. His appearance resembling Hatchiyack and being able to create portals like Janemba? He's like a love letter to many of the movie and OVA villains, which just screams awesomeness. He also forced the U7 team to team up for the first time all at once, which is awesome. His appearance also coincided with TFS' Hatchiyack special, which is further awesome.

ENGLISH DUB

1. Episode 28 (Champa Arc Begins!) - Remember when we all dreaded the retelling arcs of Super in the dub because we knew what they were like from the sub. Well, just like the original episodes - Getting to the Champa Arc was like a dream come true and a promise of new stories to be told and new characters to get English voice actors in the future.

2. Bulma's Sister - Even if for just a brief moment - It was funny to hear Tights get a dub voice and seeing how she's pretty much Bulma's opposite in voice and in character. It makes for a classic Super moment that brings me back to that particular episode.

3. Cabba and Hit's Debut - Yeah, my list doesn't include SSBK because I wasn't really looking forward to it all that much and never even got to watch the episode. Hearing Cabba officially brought a dub voice outside of XV2 was classic and it's nice to see another Saiyan character given new dub voices by Funimation's newer voice actors (hyped for Kale and Caulifla's dub voices that we'll probably hear in XV3). Same can be said for Hit. Many fans thought Hit would be voiced by Aaron Roberts and worried, but Matthew Mercer came in and brought the badass hitman a new voice, introducing a new breakout DB character for dub-only fans.

Yours? Also, here's to hoping 2018 brings us many more classic moments with new Super episodes (if it goes beyond the ToP Arc) and may you guys not be as overly descriptive as me.

EDIT: May not get a response, but should I just make this an overall favorite moments instead of just three?

I'm only listing the subs since I haven't seen all the dub episodes yet

1) Goku reviving Roshi - Just seeing Goku and Krillin cry made me very sad and emotional. I've never felt this way since Goku sacrificed himself in the Cell saga.

2) 17 and 18 - Definitely my favorite sibling duo in this franchise. I already liked them in Z, but Super made me adore them. 17 defeating Kakunsa and his help against Aniraza were all very memorable and cool moments, as for 18, her fight against Giant Ribrianne was super awesome, and one of my favorite elimination scenes in this tournament. I'm super happy Super brought these characters back and made them relevant again.

3) Ultra Instinct - I don't think I need to explain this one.
Gowasu's number 1 fan.

Interesting picks so far, some of them are moments I wouldn't even have considered like the Pan episode. Originally, I just meant the 2017 episodes of Super but it doesn't matter. Your picks can basically be seen as representing your current favorite episodes of Super OVERALL - as of 2017. Besides, I debated to make this 2015-2017 favorites or just 2017 so it doesn't matter.

Anyway, just a quick update: I've changed my original pick of Barry Kahn to -

But yeah, I'd like to hear more thoughts if anyone's interested!

Roshi in the TOP mainly chapter 105 it was epic, it was so DB, also Roshi moments with Vegeta in 107 were great

The last fight between Goku, Vegeta and Trunks against Zamasu and Black, seeing Vegeta stomping Black and then seeing them overwhelmed by Zamasu was a great moment

The fight against Anilaza, finally seeing them working as a team following Gohan lead, without the need of having Goku and Vegeta in the spotlight, also it was a great moment for 17, a huge comeback in the series

Honorable mentions to: Goku vs Jiren, Gohan and Piccolo vs Saonel and Pilina, 17 vs Goku, Buu vs Basil and Goku and Hit against Dypso and the PT

3. Goku vs Krillin on the rooftop.

Dub

1. Goku and Piccolo looking after Pan.

2. Muten Roshi's sacrifice scene
3. Episode 94 & 95 because this is the best Freeza writing ever

1. Krillin's recruitment episode in general. Gets a win over Gohan using his smarts, manages to use his abilities in a cunning way, showcases a new move(which is sadly never showcased in the actual ToP) and has some nice character moments between Krillin, Goku, Gohan and 18. Managed to convince everyone he'd last longer than he did.

2. Roshi's sacrifice episode in the ToP. Touching, made Roshi look very impressive, we got some rather nice character moments of Goku and Krillin crying over their master and Roshi surpassed all expectations.

3. Bergamo calling Goku out. Never before have I rooted for the antagonist so hard than in this fight. Impressively managed to sway half of the forum that Goku was the villain here.

Special shoutouts to Buu Vs. Basil, 17's return and Frieza's triumphant return. These were also excellent, I just have a human bias.

1. Episodes 109/110. It lived up to my expectations and then some. Really fun overall.

2. Muten Roshi's great moments. Other than the controversial episode 89, Roshi has been great. I'm so happy they did one of my favorite characters justice.

3. Freeza. I can't believe they pulled this off so well. I was first pissed off when I learned he was coming back, but the more I thought about it, the more potential I saw with him returning. And boy did they execute this one pretty much perfectly.
Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.

I haven't seen much from the dub yet but the sub :

Goku vs Jiren.

Goku blasting Kefla out of the ring.

U7 vs U3's Hatchyack looking thing.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Haven't been following the dub, but as for subbed:

#3) Zen Exhibition Match- Basil vs Buu

This fight was such good fun. I loved seeing Fat Buu in action however briefly it was. Hopefully our favourite pink tub gets some more action in the future, although I highly doubt it

#2) 109/110

The night the special aired was such a mess. Crunchyroll, VRV, and Funimation all crashed and didn't come back up till hours later. But it was so worth. The testing of power, the spirit bomb struggle, the awakening of Ultra Instinct and the fight against Jiren was superb. If the show going forward gets this much love, then I'm very excited for the future of Super (though let's finally get past the end of Z, guys!)

Real quick, honourable mentions:
-Goku vs Bergamo in the Zen Exhibition Match
-17 owning Kakunsa
-Hit vs Jiren
-Kefla's elimination
-U7 vs Aniraza

And finally

#1) Roshi

Roshi was always my favourite old school Dragonball character. The wise sage, the dirty perv, I love the old codger. When I first heard he was gonna be on the team, I expected him to be fodderized.

Then we got the end of EP 105

This was the emotional sendoff I didn't know I wanted. His character progression this arc has been fantastic, and that moment and his lines are all something I hold dear (especially as a future educator myself)

So here's to 2017, and as we move into 2018

May we all move well, learn well, play well, eat well and rest well. May we enjoy our lives merrily and to the fullest.

The Kame style is with you!

I did not watch much of the Dub, so with what I watched here are my Favorite Dubbed moments 1st;

1.) Goku and Vegeta Training with Whis!

I always enjoyed the moments when the characters train and get stronger, but this one felt much different. It was training on a whole other level to show just how much different of a level the gods of DB are compared to the mortals of their universes. It was as much of an eye opener as I think fans felt when they the show went from Orignal Dragon Ball to the Z era showing just how much more powerful the Universe was to Earth.

The Training was also very unique and funny, gave the sense of no matter how far Goku and Vegeta had come before they had so much farther to go. Also the training included chores and making Beerus's bed, very humbling IMO for the characters to show how far they are willing to go to get better.

Also seeing Vegeta get Stronger 1st then Goku was a Nice change of pace!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now My Favorite Sub - Moments, In Order, Favorite 1st!
1.) ALL of Episode 118!
I cannot Begin to say how Important and Good of an episode this was for Me Personally! I have not for a longtime seen such a turnaround in story and how I viewed a series then I did when I saw this eposide. The whole of the episode was a moment.
After the Major Disappointment that was Episode 117, 118 Took EVERYTHING I had always felt was good about Universe 2 and just took it to the Hilltop and Gangbusters! I not happy with Super at all after 117, but 118 did a total turnaround with me, it was like a Pheonix Resurrection level of amazing!
The episode showed The Unity of U2 and their Universe, the Fact they where Broadcasting the Fight to their people was Weirdly Headdcannon of Mine weeks before, that was weird LOL! Also it Gave context to Why IMO U2 and Brianne where shown always positive and show-like in their presentation, it was for their people and the responsibility to keep U2's faith alive with them, gave it much needed context and justified so much of their characters IMO! ;)
Brianne being the Goddess and Champion of an Entire Universe Blew my mind, never seen someone in DB be on an Level This important outside of the Gods and it was My Favorite Girl! Every Line Brianne Said was Golden, Inspiriting and Poetic. The final battle of the last 3 fighters of U2 was out of left field and memorable, Toei knows how to make you remember and showing a form of emotion and unity that symbolized the strength of U2. Finally the Farewell was one of the BEST Death scenes I have seen in a longtime, it crystallized U2 story arc IMO very well. :clap:
This episode also made me a more MAJOR fan of U6 and the Namekians and the lengths their people would go to surive was inspiring!
2.) Episode 102!
Again another Full episode, not all moments but enough. I was not certain about Brianne or U2 and waited until this episode to see if I would become a fan of them or not. It develieved and the fight with 17 and Kakunsa was one of the Best of the ToP, it raised the bar IMO for the ToP! All the showings of the Maidens powers where enjoyable, become a fan right their and then.
3.) Episdoe 91 ~ Brianne's Intro!
Honestly while I was beginning to watch Super finally cause the ToP arc was interesting, nothing was hooked with me to it. Then when Brianne was intro-ed and she did her Sailor Moon Transformation, 20 years of waiting for a magical girl in DB had finally come true for me! Again I waited until 102 to justify if they live up to my expectations, but still this moment change DB FOREVER for me! :thumbup:
3) Hit & Goku vs Dyspo & Kunshi
2) Ultra Instinct Goku vs Jiren
1) Goku's point blank Kamehameha on Kefla
There were so many fantastic moments in this arc that it was hard to pick, but Goku's Kamehameha on Kefla was so incredible that I've watched it over and over and over from the point where Ultimate Battle kicks in. It just never gets old, everything about it is perfect. Literally the best Kamehameha in the entire franchise, and Super rarely, if ever, has any "best in the franchise" moments. 116 has become my favorite episode of Super as a result.
As for the dub, I can't say there's many moments that stand out for me simply because I've already seen the episodes that are being dubbed, but when something stands out it stands out, and Schemmel's "TIMES TEN" is easily the most amazing line ever recorded in English, and one of the most amazing lines ever spoken out of any language period.
Those three moments were definitely my picks for Dragon ball on the subtitle version. But, the dub doesn't have those big moments besides the Kaioken times 10 moment. So, those are my picks for 2017.
• Zeno and Future Zeno playing that destroy-the-planets game. - It reminded me a lot of DC's highest entity, The Presence, for some reason.
• Vegeta transforming into Super Saiyan God. - It's just something that I have been waiting for quite some time.
• Every Caulifla's Super Saiyan 2 transformation.
As I can't pick just three moments, here are the honorable mentions: Kafla's Super Saiyan 2 transformation; Cabba's Super Saiyan 2 transformation; Goku and Vegeta performing Final Kamehameha; Universe 9 getting erased; Gohan's transformation from base up until Ultimate during his training with Piccolo; Goku vs Gohan.
I think that's all.
3. Fusion Zamasu: Before the Future Trunks arc took a steep nosedive in the last two episodes, Fusion Zamasu was awesome. Cool attacks, a total maniac, and completely stomped the protagonists.
2. Kioken: Every scene Goku uses Kioken is awesome, I'm glad they brought it back. The technique's re-introduction to the series was a great one for sure.
1. Kefla's elimination: The finale sequence where Kefla loses her shit and tries to hit Goku at all costs was really amazing. Wonderfully animated and my second favorite Kamehameha in the entire franchise.
I love these a lot too!
I think for me, it'd be:
1. Episode 88 - Piccolo vs. Gohan, simply because it made both of these characters, who'd been getting pounded by the writing staff and Toriyama since the end of the Buu saga, actually look good, very good actually. And beyond that, it was an amazing moment for the two characters. It was honestly superbly written, how Piccolo called out Gohan for not having a warrior's heart and how it gave Gohan the motivation he needed to get stronger to protect his family from erasure. I do not think that episode could be written any better, but I'm still afraid that we won't see it in the manga, even though it was also good for establishing the characters to a relevant tier of power.
2. That moment in episode 90 when Gohan and Piccolo walked into the restaurant all stoic and badass and challenged Goku and Tien. My hype for that fight was at an all time high. The fight itself didn't satisfy due to how Tien got utterly clowned and Piccolo did nothing, but I still remember the anticipation and my joy at the return to relevance for some of my favorite characters (too bad I was only dreaming in regards to Tien)
3. My third choice is a bit obscure, but when Goku fought Bergamo the first time and went SSB. I thoroughly enjoyed how Sidra, Rou, and many of the gods freaked out. The music score that played was perfect and I just thought, "We made it folks!" I also like how Goku was briefly the scumbag of this mini-arc. It's the most fun and interesting thing they've done with Goku's character in a loooong time so I was totally on board. I was disappointed that they kinda dropped that angle.
Honorable mention goes to the erasure of Universe 9. There's nothing like the first erasure and this one was comically terrifying. I think Rou's "ZENO-SAMA!!!" sold the desperation for me all the way and I really wanted more grimness following the tone shift at the end of the episode, but alas, Super didn't capitalize on that opportunity.
Hey CJStriker! This is what solidified me as a fan of the fireballs as well, as I liked the idea of seeing a poweful magical girl in the DB-verse, but was skeptical of it. I honestly wanted Kakunsa to stay in longer along with Vikal, but I'm a fan of 17 too so I was kind of glad he got the elimination in such an epic way. Very tough fight to root for. I liked that each Fireball fought with a unique style. Rozie is one of my favorite characters in the ToP for the Yacchina fist alone. It's awesome and hilarious! DADADADADADADADA!
