Lack of shipping?
Don't know if it is due to the series being over by the time it was released in the US or not, but I noticed that there seems to be no shipping in the DB/DBZ fandom. Does anyone now if there was anywhen the series was originally released in Japan or not? Just noticed, and thought I'd ask you guys' thoughts.

I don't want to answer the wrong question/sound stupid for answering the wrong question....do you mean shipping as in fans pairing certain characters together?
There's still plenty of that over on DeviantArt.
(I don't visit FF.net anymore other than to review a friend's fic, sorry ^_^; )
Yes, it was fairly huge on ff.net "back in the day". I've read stuff supporting both canon pairings (I was a big Goku/Chi-Chi fan way back when; one of the best stories I ever read on ff.net was one of those) and non-canon pairings. There's a term for it actually but I forget what it's called..."Odd Couples" I think.
Or do you mean shipping as in mailing things?

Ah, thank goodness; I didn't wanna answer the wrong question and sound air-headed for doing so. ^_^;

I think it's because you don't really have that many love triangles and such to begin with in the actual series; Yamcha/Bulma/Vegeta is about as close as you get. So for the most part you get the actual canon couples; the ones with a few vague hints in the canon (the one in my avatar; Tenshinhan/Lunch, and a couple others), and the completely out there ones (Goku/Vegeta, Gohan/Piccolo).
Trunks & Goten forever
Did you say Gohan/Piccolo?
I'm going to go stick my head in a vat of bleach now...
Umm, Shipping isn't inherently part of the style of stories that Toriyama writes...... Dr. Slump, NMZ, and everything in between... I still notice a relative lack of shipping. DBZ just mutated into a monster action story unexpectedly, but it's still a Toriyama work.

Most likely it's due to the fact that it's been 20 years since it's ended... or begun... or something...
Plus, there isn't really a lot of girls to match most guys up and I think an average amount of people wouldn't like yaoi. A majority of yaoi fans are female (from the amount I know <.< >.>) and a shonen series isn't going to attract that many female fans.
Well that's my two pence anyway.

Two of the most popular shonen titles right now, Bleach and Naruto, have quite a large female following, and both series' yaoi communities are very strong. By contrast, the DB fandom is pretty much male-dominated, and forgive me my assumptions, guys just aren't into shipping to the (rather extreme) extent that girls are.
Then we have fanstuff like doujinshi that depict the various couples in the series, from the canon/mainstream ones (Vegeta/Bulma, Goku/Chi Chi) to the fanon/esoteric ones (Goku/Piccolo, Goku/Vegeta, Tenshinhan/Lunch.) Shipping exists in the Dragon Ball fandom and yaoi is fairly popular, but they don't exactly make headlines over here.

Ship-wars are scary, and I don't wish them upon any fandom. I'm glad Dragon Ball is, for the most part, removed from that aspect of fandom. There is some Vegeta/Bulma vs. Yamcha/Bulma, but I think that's about it.Super Sonic wrote:Know about the shipping in those two series. Especially the debate over whether Naruto should end up with Sakura or Hinata. Know Pokemon has quite a few shippers in its fandom too.

Yeah, good thing Toriyama gave us the official consenus on THAT one.kinoko wrote:There is some Vegeta/Bulma vs. Yamcha/Bulma, but I think that's about it.
On topic, there are very few shippable possibilities in DragonBall, and I agree that that's a good thing.

Lol, I don't know about today, but as recent as a year or so ago there was a relatively huge inner-ship-battle at DA. (Though I'm not at liberty to discuss details; you'd need a 3rd party for that)
Relative madness a couple years ago but everyone seems to get along now. :3
I love seeing how different people's reactions are here VS DA and the other dbz forum I visit. It's really interesting.

Oh man, really??? ><;;; dA is generally more in-tune with the shipping world, isn't it? It scares me over there, too. I don't know much about stuff that goes on at deviantArt, but the shipping community (in general) is pretty intense on Live Journal. Coming here is very refreshing. ^^

There were clubs accounts created during that battle.
Like actual "This character is this" "this character is that" "this character is not either because they don't like that other character at all" clubs.
This was all back during 2005 or so.
Most of the clubs are now defunct. One or two are still running.
People left DA, left the fandom, one person was banned for a year and just returned recently, all that stuff during that period of time.
I tend to think I'm more easy-going about things nowadays than back then. Things used to be crazy.
I don't really use Live Journal and I've only visited it...under 5 times?
I blog on DA so I don't have any seperate site like that.
Everyone's pretty friendly on DA now. The anomosity that used to be present is gone.
On hiatus.
