What's wrong with the FUNi grunting?

I came across that scene yesterday too... didn't care for it. Actually didn't care for the whole scene when I first saw it (ending with the narrator saying something like "A power-packed punch from a suped-up Super Saiyan?!?").

To be perfectly honest with you, my comment had the first recording in mind. I don't like Sabat's acting much better now (well, actually his acting is better but his voice and yelling still piss me off) so I didn't bother to watch that scene in english on the S3 set. So I can't really comment on that scene.

I wonder if they will do any re-dubbing with S4 though. It seems like most of that work, aside from narration, is coming from Chris and Sonny. But they had pretty much sunk into their roles by then. There's not much difference IMHO between Cell Saga Krillin and redub Krillin. Piccolo was the same, just over-exaggerated. Vegeta's pretty much the same deal. "Wannabe Drummond" was gone and we had the voice that he's used since. He just tended to overplay it back then. I think the Sabat voice most in need of a redub is Yamcha. He did not know how to handle him then. He did much better in Dragon Ball. But the S3 set had the old cheesy voice inflection and dialogue, so I wouldn't bet on that.

Yep, and if I'm not mistaken it's commonplace knowledge that Pioneer (later to be known as Geneon) was vying for the license, hence their working with FUNimation for the distribution rights so they wouldn't completely lose out.

Feh, too bad Gen was related to someone at Toei. Just think, if he'd been a normal schmuck with a fledgling company, none of this would have happened.

It's better that this way I think. Besides, the ones who were fans before the US dub, you should know a lot of us aren't old men and were kids at the time DB premiered over here.

Watch who you're calling "old" son. I'm only 23. I was around 9 or 10 or so when I first got into the series (whenever the hell it was that the late Cell games/early Buu saga was airing in Japan).

I'm turning 23 in a few days and I have to say, right now I feel old. :P I think I got into DBZ when I was 11 or 12, when it was running at like 6:30 in the morning on WB/UPN.

You're both younger than me then, though I do feel old at 25. When "Curse of the Blood Rubies" premiered, I was 12 going on 13 and about to start 7th grade.

Saw the "watched before US premiere" and assumed you to be about 35.

Yeah whoa, watch it. I watched before FUNi, cuz I watched the dub of the Pilaf Saga that aired. So while not in the same boat as these "old men," I do parallel them chronologically. And I'm 24. And I was a kid when it first aired. I don't remember the year, but either in late elementary or middle school.

Bad dubs have been going since... well since anime has been brought to the States. Usually even fans of them can admit their shortcomings. For some reason, a lot of people like to act like the DBZ dub is the true version of the show. Fans defend what I would call "bad dub #XX" in a long list of sub par dubbing efforts. Even many otaku will switch from a "fuck the Naruto/One Piece/Card Captor Sakura/etc dubs" rant to a "DBZ is so lame" rant, and when pressed reveal that the majority of their exposure to Dragon ball came from afternoon Toonami.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

When you say "Bad dub" it can vary on how. For example, Speed Racer might be considered bad due to the lip-sync not matching, but since it was more popular here than in Japan it isn't badmouthed. jAlso I felt it made the show funny and wouldn't want to see a new dub where the lip-sync matched, or the Japanese.

You know, it's whoever likes it. Kids are the target audience, and I don't think kids hate the dub, they just watch it to enjoy it, not sitting there analyzing it and comparing it to the Japanese version. I always liked the dub until I saw the Japanese version and thought that it was so much cooler and talked crap about the dub. Then I simply grew out of it and I enjoy the dubbing. I think I started liking the voices around the time I got my first DVD set a few years back. They sound better on DVD than on TV. I like that the music is more exciting than the Japanese version. I just learned to roll with it. I look at it as two separate Animes, one Japanese, one American. No biggie.

I basically see it as two different entities as well (goes to show how far they strayed from the original :? ), but, I would rather have a good dub that's true to the original.

I wouldn't. What would be the point of that? I guess I can see your point, but when you've seen it in Japanese so many times (which most did seeing as they didn't get through the whole series till a few years ago), do you really want to watch the same show translated? It didn't stray THAT far from the original, just the music really. Most of the time they say the same thing in different words. But hey, what do you expect? I'll give FUNimation credit, they did something unique. They weren't lazy. It would be a lot easier for them to take the original music and not compose their own and it would be a lot easier for them to just read off the translated script instead of having not only a translated script, but writing an all new script themselves. And their script matches the lip syncing very well, so I give them props.

Well, the whole concept of ki was thrown out the window, attack names were sometimes replaced with nonesense, jokes were toned down for kids, etc. So I wouldn't call the translation that great...plus let's not forget mistakes like Dr. Gero being the mastermind behind the Red Ribbon Army and General Tao....

Mercenary in the DB dub, when he appears in Z they refer to him as General.

They don't make that many "mistakes". The jokes aren't toned down really. I mean most people wouldn't get the Japanese jokes. Sometimes, it's actually better, sometimes it's not. I personally like nearly all transformation scenes more from FUNimation. Like Gohan turning Ultimate or Mystic whatever you wanna call it. The Japanese version had...well...clown music playing and his high pitched squeek was so annoying. But the FUNimation music mixed with Kyle Herbert's deep voice made it good.

Right because the more synthesized rock music you play and the louder and more ear shattering constipated yells you make measure how awesome the scene is M I RITE? Oh and they don't make that many mistakes...hm...riiiiiight so did you know Goku's father is a brilliant scientist and all of Frieza's crew was really Bardocks? Starblazers. Robotech (actually that's pretty decent on its own merit, but thoroughly shanks Macross). Bubblegum Crisis. Sailor Moon. Ronin Warriors. Voltron was cheesed up and toned down, with a Robotech-ish merge with an unrelated show. Those are just a couple off the top of my head. It isnt even an insult on fandom. Liking or disliking something often isn't a measure of quality. I love Ronin Warriors, but its still a bastardization of Samurai Troopers ("hipped-up" dialogue, script and name changes, serious content edits- not the worst dub ever overall but still cut down as was the norm in those days). Oh god, how can I forget Teknoman. Fuckin' Teknoman. I liked Teknoman a lot... until I saw Tekkaman Blade.
