Is it true that Toriyama hated working on Dragonball?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Akira Toiryama doesn't own DB/Z, Toei does. And I don't know. I'd say that the Cell Saga was the best...and I liked the Majin Buu saga because it had a good story, just so much stuff going on. I'm glad we got an older Gohan, and got Goten and Trunks, and Vegeta's new desire to help Earth and even Goku.

By the way, if the series ended at Frieza, I would hate Gohan forever lol Hated him up until he fought with Cell. Then in the Majin Buu saga, I liked him. Of course I will always like Goku and Vegeta more, but I guess Gohan's become my third favorite. You don't get it, I hated Gohan until the Cell Saga. I saw him as a useless character. All he ever did was get in trouble and screw people over. He had "great hidden power" and he never used it, all he did was piss himself, cry, fight with his powers for like 15 seconds, and that's it. If it would've ended at Frieza, we would've never seen his powers unlocked.

It's not like it ever felt like an entire new planet though. Just one new setting for battles. The Cell arc got several of those, if you go there. ^^;
That's your personal experience, though. For me, planet Namek was refreshing and new. There were also a lot of new things, like new alien races, lots of strong warriors, and a dragonball chase that led to the birth of the Legendary Super Saiyan.
The Namek part was simply awesome, and I was excited all the time.
Plus, that was the last time we saw Krillin in action, actually defeating enemies, throwing a kienzan at 2nd form Freeza.
That's my personal opinion though.

Technically, wouldn't Shueisha "own" DragonBall since they published it originally?

Copyright notices for the series always seem to go "Bird Studios / Shuueisha / Toei Animation / Fuji TV" (not necessarily in that order).

Cell saga was probably the best. Buu was pretty good, too, and had awesome transformations (Fusion, SSJ3, "Mystic")
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!
Cold World (Fanfic)

The Saiyan/Freeza arc was the best. The series went downhill fast after SSJ Goku vs Freeza.

I agree. Although there was an upswing in Buu saga, you could feel the loss of enthusiasm from Akira Toriyama's side.

I'm going to have to agree with the Saiyan/Freeza arcs being my personal favs. The sense of urgency and fear and desperation were the strongest there, and it really made it fun to read. Watching Nappa singlehandedly tear apart the heroes, or Recoom crush Vegeta, Kuririn, and Gohan, or Freeza stomp on Vegeta and Piccolo's best efforts, then Goku comes in to save the day. Theres just this big feeling of relief there that always gets my blood pumping.

That's what I said in my post, he seemed to have no ideas for developing the villain other than the heroes being idiots. Buu didn't even really outsmart them, or outfight them, to beat each one.

Like, say, SSj3 Gotenks failing to wipe out buu because buu got lucky and they ran out of time. And then Buu doesn't kill Goku and Gohan because...they got lucky and ran out of time. When your major plot points come about not by the characters' actions but random luck, that's lazy writing.

:( Sad, there was a lot of potential in the Buu enemies...

This is true.
Dragonball is Toriyama's creation but it's copyrights notices are for the companies you named.

Then again, "Bird Studios" basically is Toriyama. ^^;
