A brief look at the English Filipino DBZ dub

Post by NeverRamza » Wed Nov 21, 2007 2:04 am

I've been asked about my rare tapes on these forums a few times and so with my new camera, I'd like to share some of them with you. Basically, before the Funimation DBZ dub, there was another English dub that's hardly talked about on the net. It is the Filipino English dub. I decided to bust out the VHS tape and finally give the rest of the internet a chance to hear what some of the voices sounded like in this previous dub.

Yes, I'm using a handheld cam and holding it to the television screen. I know it's low quality and I purposely didn't use a tripod or anything like that just to reinforce the idea that this wasn't being posted as any sort of alternative to a commercial version. Plus, the episode I show is pretty bad anyway, and really not one anyone would watch out of order.

This is all done with the intention of being educational and to enlighten everyone that there was indeed an English dub that predates Funimation's. Also, as an added bonus, you get to hear myself rambling throughout the entire thing when no one's talking.

Part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IkmSu28aaKA
Part 3: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2mMvQKU0tiE

Let me know what you guys think 8)

I won't be posting any full episodes or anything like that. Again, this is just to show off that this dub does indeed exist.

Huh. Nappa sounded like how I'd expect dub-Vegeta to sound, while Vegeta's voice was smooth; like he was just some random guy. o_O;

Ah well, I learned stuff.
On hiatus.

I have a brief memory of someone telling me that they made it somewhere into the Namek/Freeza arc but that's about all I know.

Mhm, but Meri has samples from the Trunks arc on her page though it's from the Tagalog dub. So, does this mean that there're one English and one Tagalog dub for DBZ for the Philipinnes?

Maybe it's me, but I'd rather watch the episode than hear commentary over it.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Whoa I really didn't know that the Philippines had a English dub of dragonball.
Do you know how long did the dub had the original Japanese music ?
To me vegeta and nappa voices really doesn't fit well but the and other characters voices are kinda normal.

If you want to watch the episode for the sake of enjoyment, buy the DVD.

Hmm...I was in the Philippines this past June, and I couldn't find it there. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, but I did a fairly thorough run of the Mall of Asia (huge, huge mall, one of the biggest in the world) and still didn't see anything. If anyone knows where to get it, it'd make me happy.

I was looking for Pokemon in Tagalog (it would be a good way to better learn my parents language), as well, with no luck. I caught it on tv, and the voices and everything fit perfect!
