Would it be worth it getting Dragon Boxes?
I'm honestly debating if I should get the Dragon Boxes. I can't read Japanese so it'd be basically like watching a silent film. (Unless there are english subtitles though I doubt there are)
Would it be worth getting the Dragon Boxes even though I can't speak or read Japanese, or should I opt for the "Remastered" Box Sets, even though the colors are messed up and the picture is cropped but it's in a language I understand.
Another reason I'm slightly siding to Remastered as they're 30 bucks compared to the $700 (estimated) that Dragon Box Volume 1 is.

O_O I doubt the Dragon Box is $700...It's your call. The Dragon Box is a great collection. Full picture. But it does not have subtitles, and is fully in Japanese. I personally have all the single released DVDs of the series from FUNimation and I'm getting the Remastered series simply because...that's the new big DBZ thing here in the US of Dragon Ball, so that's what I'm getting. It's the future of the US series.
Well it depends on "what are you going to to with the dvds?"
- only watch and enjoy?
- try to re-remaster it?
- make some amv's?
- something else...
if you want only to watch and enjoy the show, the Funi's remastered boxets in widescreen are enough. if you want to make some amv's, i recommend the dragonbox dvds.

Watch and enjoy, I don't like AMVs and I can't remaster anything to save my life.RVE wrote:Well it depends on "what are you going to to with the dvds?"

Eh, there's always learning Japanese. It's fun, and if you like anime or video games it's extremely worth while.Tamagon wrote:I'm honestly debating if I should get the Dragon Boxes. Depends. Are you the type that can watch something on YouTube and be happy with the quality, or would you rather get the best possible picture quality? If it's the former, go with FUNi. The latter, go with Toei.Would it be worth getting the Dragon Boxes even though I can't speak or read Japanese, or should I opt for the "Remastered" Box Sets, even though the colors are messed up and the picture is cropped but it's in a language I understand.
Eh, true. Back when I bought the DragonBoxes in 2003-2006, the argument was a little different. FUNimation's run of DBZ clocked in at about $2619.75 (I think?), whereas the Toei DragonBoxes for Z were about $2000.00 (or less, if you preordered). These days, it all comes down to whether you want to import, and if you even care about picture quality. The sales of FUNi's sets suggest that most people don'tAnother reason I'm slightly siding to Remastered as they're 30 bucks compared to the $700 (estimated) that Dragon Box Volume 1 is.

The Dragon Boxes are a complete rip-off anyway you cut it. Why the hell would you fork over 800 to 1600 bucks for a TV series?

How could you like a show so much that'd you spend 1600 bucks on a boxset for it?MajinVejitaXV wrote:Because you like DragonBall, apparentlyjjgp1112 wrote:The Dragon Boxes are a complete rip-off anyway you cut it. Why the hell would you fork over 800 to 1600 bucks for a TV series?
FUNimation's prices for Z were far worse anyway, and even then you never got the full series consistently.

Why would you spend over 100 bucks on a TV show set in the first place? With the single releases, if you bought them when they first came out and progressively added to your DVD collection, it'd make more sense than looking like a complete lifeless geek by spending 1600 bucks on a show. Think about it: when a DVD comes out, spend $25, get money within the couple-of-month wait, and then by the next DVD. While it's still spending $2600 bucks, it's a lot easier than buying them at once.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Because, back in 2003, it was a better prospect than spending $2600 on individual releases for itjjgp1112 wrote:How could you like a show so much that'd you spend 1600 bucks on a boxset for it?

Yeah, FUNimation had $15.00 (NOW) per individual DVD which had 3 episodes on it, 4 at the most if you were lucky. Then they got box-sets which would still cost you a pretty penny. However, after getting those, it's nice to get a newer version for much less. $30 for 30 episodes is awesome. If you were to buy individual DVDs, it would be $150 for 30 episodes. Anyway, since I have all of the individual DVDs, I'm not going to get the Dragon Box. Same show, except shows a fraction tiny bit more, that you don't even notice. Other than that, I can get Dragon Box quality, just turn the Sharpness down and if you really are THAT big about it, turn the tint up...or down...whatever gets you closer to pinkish. I am still going to get all of the "Remastered" because it's just another version of the show, something brand new. New more blue-oriented colors, smooth non-grainy film...although the lines disappear sometimes (Damn FUNimation lol still, I guess it's the breaks) and if you're a fan of the Japanese score (I'm not, but there are those out there), you can have the Japanese music with the US voice dubbing. The Widescreen looks practically the same as it did with overscan on a 4:3 TV, so if you saw the whole series on a regular 4:3 TV, you should not notice the difference (except the bottom, the top is the same), and it has some extra video on the sided so if you saw the series on a 4:3 TV, you even see more than you did before. It's well worth it to get this. However, if you want picture quality, no doubt Dragon Box or individual DVDs are the way to go, but if you want the show that you love for a lot less money than you'd be chipping away any other way, then the Remastered is for you.
By the way, somebody exadurated when they compared FUNimation's DVDs to video quality of Youtube. The individual DVDs are the same except sharpness and tint, which you can adjust on your TV, and the re-release has stunning picture quality (when the lines don't disappear).

Or, you could be a beast and spend it all at once, like Corey didjjgp1112 wrote:Why would you spend over 100 bucks on a TV show set in the first place? Actually just a couple of weeks ago I went crazy with my money. I wanted to have the original DVDs because I was on the fence about the "Remastered" version and finally decided to get both. So I got what I was missing from the series practically at the same time. Ebay is awesome. I got the Ultimate Uncut series, Frieza Saga, Cell Games, Majin Buu Saga (the 7 DVDs of it that come before the Fusion Saga), and the Great Saiyaman Saga. All were brand new factory sealed except the Frieza Saga, but couldn't expect it to be new. The others were basically sold by a store that had many of them. Soon as I bought, he put another up, so that means he had a bunch of them laying around. So now I'll have both versions

You won't have uncut, 4:3 versions of episodes 28-67. >>TheGreatness25 wrote:Actually just a couple of weeks ago I went crazy with my money. Look, I could go on about how someone would have spent over $3200 and still not have all of DragonBall/Z/GT in a consistent format if they bought all the FUNi discs since 2000, about how FUNimation keeps fucking people and all that jazz, but everything boils down to the fact that we seem to be having a misunderstanding here, so let me just clear it up:jjgp1112 wrote:Blah blah blah, why spend money, blah blah blah, $25 at a time, blah blah blah...
I'm a dork who makes good money for his age, and I have a huge penis. I know this might be hard for you, but it's simply something we all have to live with. It's not easy for me either, but I do the best I can.
