Episode #0104 (25 November 2007)

Episode #0104! VegettoEX, Meri, and Julian discuss the big news from the week (live-action movie and Atari news just never stops!). Later on, Jeff and Andrew pop in to review the remastered version of the Chinese live-action movie, "Dragon Ball Ultimate Edition"! How should this movie be enjoyed? The end of November's releases and a fun little e-mail round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the fantascarino *one-hundred-four* episodes, now.

With all the news of the upcoming American live-action adaptation of the DragonBall franchise, it only makes sense to take a look at the recent re-release of the original live-action movie...! Actually, I take that back. Maybe it wasn't a very good idea. I'm still in pain today.

Downloading right now, but I have a question for anyone who's seen both versions. Which one would you recommend, you know, for a time that I feel slightly masochistic.

EDIT: Dear Lord, I never imagined that one would have to get that wasted in order to enjoy that movie.

Not the funniest ever, but certainly one of the most amusing. I beg to wonder what else will bring about another drunken episode in the future.

Oh, I know you guys mentioned it once in another episode, but will you be going to NYAnimeFest?

Not exactly much in the episode content-wise, but at least you guys've finally answered the question: Will DB fans enjoy the live action Chinese movie?

Would you mind putting up a clip of your favorite worst scene in the movie? Though judging from the slight slur in some of your guys' voices, I'm sure you won't remember it :P.

EDIT: Pretty interesting e-mail, too. It reminds me of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes sending mail to himself from the past.

And I'm guessing that was Jeff's beautiful singing voice at the end of the episode? Was he even aware that he was being recorded  ?

The funny part is that after watching that movie, the hang over will probably be refreshing.

Every once in a while, the bunch of us need an episode like this... no days upon days of prep-work, no unnecessary research, etc. Sit back, relax, watch a dumb movie, and attempt to review it without going insane.

I know that Tanooki Kuribo already posted a bunch of images, but here are some of my choice favorites that nearly drove me up a wall with absurdness-yet-awesomeness:

One thing I forgot to mention is that the re-release is NTSC all-regions; there's no encryption on it. Import away, ye foreigners! The video quality is a drastic improvement upon the old release, but you're missing out on the sock puppets and cartoon bats in the new one :P.

It's a stupid 4chan meme. I figured it would be a funny/silly thing to pull on you since you meantioned in a previous episode not understand 4chan and it's culture (or Internet culture in general).

And I love pulling inside jokes on people on the "outside."

I missed the bug eyed Roshi and the turtle head Roshi cause by that point I decided to just skim through the movie. This is actually the first time seeing it. Why would Roshi's walking stick have a cobra on it? He's not the cobra hermit damnit!

I remember that I was being forced by my friends into watching this movie during my early years in Taiwan. Being a retarded 7-year old non-Dragon Ball believer at the time, I thought the movie was terrific. I haven't had the chance to watch the movie as an adult yet, but after listening to the podcast, I'm backing down, even from the new special effect version. Screw this, I might just get wasted with some friends so we can all hallucinate (word usage?) up our own special effects during the movie. Funny podcast.

I am planning on purchasing the film. But I suppose before I do so I need to buy an ass-load of alcohol. Due to your remarks in the podcast, I think they need to put a warning label on the DVD. Something like:

Note: For the best viewing experience, get really, really drunk.

I think something like this will let future viewers know what must be done if they are to have a good time with the film.

My suggestion (as what has been mentioned several times before) is not to take this movie seriously. If you are not drinking heavily, well just do not expect a good movie on all fronts since it is very mediocre and absurdist film. Think of the movie as a ethnic blend of the live action Double Dragon and maybe a really crappy martial arts flick (scraping the bottom of the barrel here with maybe one of the really shoddy "see the wire" Shaw Brothers flicks). I am probably giving the film too much credit...but as you pointed out when it feels like a surreal mix of several elements (Journey to the West, Dragonball first flick, and I guess Ranma 1/2 music)...you tend to get a blended movie. I am hopeful in one aspect that maybe the American Dragonball film will be at least palatable to the fans (even if not living up to expectations)...and not puke worthy. But hopefully if not, then well I guess the one thing that we can all get out of it will be that there will be another drunken podcast in the far flung future.

I have never seen this movie. Is that an actual screenshot from the new edition? I find it hard to beleive that it would blend in well with the rest of the footage.
