There was such an excellent post from another thread about this. I want to share it here because it absolutely nails it.

Goku fights for the sake of fighting, he can overcome his sense of self by emptying his mind which is why he was able to attain UI while Vegeta failed."
Why could Goku achieve UI but Vegeta couldn't?

That nonsense about Goku overcoming his senses by emptying his mind has nothing to do with his motivation for fighting, and it's plain wrong because Goku achieved UI by breaking through his shell, not by emptying his mind.
Besides, your argument fails anyway, because Goku also fights for the sake of others when things get bad enough like the current situation. He even said in 128 that for the sake of his friends and the trust they gave him he can't afford to lose now. Vegeta doesn't only fight to protect, that motivation is only relevant most in this TOP when everything is on the line so his main objective is the protect. Putting that aside, generally Vegeta fights and trains to push himself and to be the ultimate number one just like Goku, he said it multiple times in Super.
