Chi-Chi Has A Drinking Problem (Character Song Discussion)

Post by Suupaa Gohan 2 » Thu Nov 22, 2007 4:59 pm

Okay so, I consider myself as having amassed a good sized DB song collection over the past like...eight years or so (though when I say 'amassed' I don't mean I have them all now; I lost quite a few of the rarer tracks from sites that don't exist anymore when my old computer crashed in '03). But every year I end up stumbling on a site that has a few new ones I've never heard before, and this year is no exception.

Two of the songs I happened to find this year were I-Ke-Na-I URARA MAJIKKU and Kokoro Kara Nureta Futari, both duets sung by Nozawa Masako (Chibi Gohan) and Shou Mayumi (Chi-Chi; original VA). I uh...

Well I didn't find any official translations or even romanized lyrics to either, which is common of rarer tracks, but when I first listened to the first minute or so of Kokoro Kara Nureta Futari I could already kinda get the premise - Chi-Chi is wasted off her ass and drags poor little Gohan up on stage with her to sing karaoke. Uh...wow. And Gohan sure doesn't sound very happy about it, either (though Chibi Gohan freak I am I find this absolutely adorable), considering all his initial protesting and just...the lackluster and totally embarassed voice in which he's singing along with Mommy Drunkenstein.

Thing is...this isn't the only song along the same lines.

I-Ke-Na-I URARA MAJIKKU doesn't seem to be taking place in public like the former, because from what I gather it's probably after dinner or something, and Gohan is talking about studying...but there's Chi-Chi again, and it's obvious by her voice that she's once again drunk off her ass - and at HOME no less. For shame. And so she makes Gohan get...I think she's talking about a cassette tape or something, whatever, that has the song she's going to sing, and then they sing. Gohan doesn't sound nearly as 'guhhh...' as he does in Kokoro Kara Nureta Futari, but still...what the Hell is with this?!

I always thought Gokou was the bad parental influence with his never-being-around-ness and his always-dragging-his-son-into-life-risking-battles-ness and whatnot, but apparently when he's not around...Chi-Chi is drinking. And when you consider that Shou Mayumi does the voice of Chi-Chi in both of these songs, and she stopped voicing Chi-Chi in like, mid-Freeza Saga or something (don't count on me for an exact statement on that though), Gohan's in his younger years for both of these songs. I mean...apparently Chi-Chi has a serious drinking problem that's never addressed in the series. It certainly explains her violent tendancies, though, if you ask me, moreso than the fact that she's a former martial artist.

So I was randomly thinking about the sides of the characters we see in these songs that we don't see in the series. Like, Vegeta-Sama no Oryouri no Jigoku? To me this song brings to mind the Vegeta we'd see if Movie #9 were to be considered canon; the way Vegeta behaves after Gokou dies, and whatnot...maybe this becomes one of his hobbies to pass the time? Maybe he even goes on to...b-become a master chef...? It's just...so...uh...

Well there are quite a few character songs that display sides of characters the beat-em-up style of DBZ just never gets around to showing. So I thought it may be an...interesting...discussion topic. If this isn't the typical type of post for the Music forum, forgive me; I figured since the basis for my topic is the music, even if it's more of a 'general discussion' type of topic, this was the most appropriate place.

So, discuss!! :D

Well as for Chi-Chi I think drunk is the only way she would be that ridiculous. She's usually mild mannered so it would be insanely out of character for her just to bust into song sober.

I definitely thought she sounded drunk on the Kokoro Kara Nureta Futari song, but not really on Urara Magic. In that one, I thought she was just excited because she bought a karaoke machine so they could sing at home. It's funny how in both of the songs she starts screaming at Gohan for the lyrics he's singing, acting as if he's saying those things to her, when she's the one who forced him to sing in the first place.

Vegeta's Cooking Hell has always fascinated me. It's like, where did this idea even come from? "Hey, let's just have Vegeta randomly making okonomiyaki and singing about it, because, uh, it's awesome!" (random side note: Vegeta vs. Irok Wok Jan....who's the bigger asshole? LOL) The very idea of Vegeta cooking inspired me to make a random fan-comic involving that concept a few years back. But I still have no idea why they even thought to make a song like that. Still, it's one of my favorite DBZ songs.

I find the "song" with Piccolo's freaking out to Gohan's whistling to be hilarious, especially near the end where he loses his fucking mind and starts watching the pretty birdies....Piyoyo! Piyoyo!

I also think Krillin's songs are pretty fun (his "I want to get married Mambo" and "Asa hiru yoru kimi boku"). Cute and peppy, fun to sing along to.

I find Kaiou's dumb pun "songs" to be quite annoying, though. They're always so groan-inducingly bad, and then he has this stupid wheezing, sputtering laugh that sounds so much worse than it ever did in the series (at least, I didn't have to listen to it for three minutes at a time in the show).

But, yeah, I mostly enjoy the character songs from Dragonball, along with all the other songs (I have the four Complete Song Collections and listen to them quite frequently).

Does Tien sing at all in any of the song collections?

No Tenshinhan doesn't sing in any of them I'm afraid.

As for the songs sung by Chi-Chi, like Sailorspazz I never really took her to be crazy-drunk when I first heard "Kokoro Kara Nureta Futari", just a little tipsy at most combined with being over-enthusiastic and Gohan embarassed more than anything. :? And the one at home, certainly not drunk there in my opinion. As to the comment about Chi-Chi having to be drunk to be that silly, I also disagree with. She did the vocal parts in the song "Mama wa Shiawase Inotte 'ru", quite a silly song and she definitely wasn't drunk there. Let's also not forget that episode towards the end of the Buu saga where they had the party and she got up and danced. She was much older there and still knew how to let loose.

That scene was filler so it doesn't count! /fanboynerdvoice

I was more or less joking.

I got the song books from the hit collection CDs, if you'd like the lyrics.
