Dragonball Live-Action Film Casts Jamie Chung as Chi Chi
posted on 2007-12-06 05:24 EST
Korean-American actress appeared in The Real World, TV guest roles

The Hollywood Reporter entertainment industry newspaper reports that actress Jamie Chung has signed onto the live-action Dragonball film as the main character Goku's love interest, Chi Chi. Jamie Chung is best known for her appearance on MTV's The Real World, the prototype for many of today's so-called reality television series. In addition to guest television roles, She will also star in the title role in Samurai Girl, a pilot for a possible television series on America's ABC Family network. (This project is based on Carrie Asai's Samurai Girl novels and is unrelated to Reiji Saiga and Sora Inoue's Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School manga.)

The Dragonball movie is based on Akira Toriyama's hit fighting manga that was published in Shueisha's Shonen Jump magazines in both Japan and North America. Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, The Invisible, Lost television series) has already been cast as Goku, and James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Spike, Smallville's Braniac) will play his nemesis, Piccolo. Director James Wong (Final Destination, X-Files television series, The One) and producer Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) started principal photography of the film for Twentieth Century Fox last month. The movie is scheduled to open on August 15, 2008.

Thank you to Daniel Zelter for the news tip.

Well to be honest, high school hasn't been stated. The chud.com synopsis says only that Goku is a "student" and considered unpopular and uncool. It was just my own assumption that they mean a student [in high school], because at none of the colleges I've attened have I really seen people being truly picked on and called "unpopular and uncool." I'm not saying that doesn't happen at all in college, I'm just saying it happens on a much smaller scale then it does in high school. At least, in my own personal experience.

I was honestly nervous about the Transformers movie because there was a glimmer of hope for that one. It turned out really bad however and kinda got me down.

But with Dragon Ball I don't really feel the same way. I mean regardless of how this movie is going to turn out I'm actually excited about it. My ticket is already bought, so to speak.

I feel this way because there is no hope for this film. None. There's just way to much stuff in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z for a 2 hour American film to give an accurate portrayel of Toriyama's work. Whether or not the film is "funny hokey bad" or just plain god awful "Uwe Boll" bad I'll probably enjoy it.

There's nothing to be disappointed about here because we all know that a live action Dragon Ball film in America never had a snowflakes chance in HFIL.

Well look at it this way: it's not that bad of a situation. I'd say it has a chance of being a good film, but I am almost certain that it's not going to be worth anything to Toriyama purists. Look at films such as Star Wars and the Matrix - both of which have crazy story premises and even more demanding special effects but both have turned out to be massive franchises and box office successes.

Even the television series "Heroes" and the X-Men movies seem to give a glimmer of hope as to what is attainable in this day and age. These directors aren't idiots so obviously they are going to have to change a few things to make it work as a live action film. I'm putting money on the fact that this will be Dragonball - just not as we know it :P

I've got to agree with Orochi on this one. Even if this movie is the biggest piece of shit in the world, I'm going to feel compelled to go see it regardless. I mean, it's DBZ, I grew up with it. That's why you've gotta go see this with an open mind. It could turn out like the Halloween remake, a lot of people loved it and hold it right next to the original (like me), and a lot of people say it destroyed the series. It's all up to the individual.

In otherwords, blast it after you see it.

MTV talked to singer Mario who sang the #1 hit song, "Let Me Love You," about his role in an upcoming movie. That movie is Dragon Ball.

Question: Are you working on any upcoming movies?

Mario: I’ve got a project that’s pending but it’s top secret so I can’t really talk about it.

Question: Oh, come on. Can you give us a hint?

Mario: I can say this … it has something to do with dragons and the last letter of the alphabet and there’s a lot of fans out there.

Question: Dragon Ball Z?

Mario: I’m not saying nothin’!
That made me cry.
If things continue like this we're probably going to have 50 cent play nappa.
Mario's actually not that bad. He was in the hit movie "Step Up." It's not one of my personal favorites, but regardless it was a popular movie. And most importantly, Mario wasn't a terrible actor. I'm just sayin that if he'll be in the movie, at least it won't be his first movie.

I thought it was his first movie, my apologies.

You have an attitude like that and yet claim you're going to enjoy it?

Sure I'll enjoy it.

I was worried about Transformers because it had the potential to be incredible. Dragon Ball has no such potential it is completely and utterly doomed no matter what. So there's nothing for me to be worried about because when there is no chance for success there's no point in being disappointed.

What I can't wait to see is what portions of Dragon Ball they're going to grab at random and try to mix together to form some hideous hodgepodge of a film that lasts for 2 hours. I actually think I may laugh myself to death.

So granted, I'm being a bit of a negative nancy about the situation but come on.... contemporary high school Goku? This I gotta see.

Well, at least Chi-Chi's actress looks the part (I'm STILL iffy about the guy they picked for Goku. >_> ) I don't know how well she can act though as I've never seen whatever she was in.
On hiatus.

Le gasp! I finally agree on a casting choice! Chi Chi looks fairly good.

I would've liked to have seen Zhang Ziyi play the part of Chi Chi. She's gorgeous and a very good actress.

Agreed. However, a quick YouTube search reveals that she doesn't speak English very well.

I know Vegeta wont be a part of this movie, but if the whole thing does get franchised, who do you think would be good at playing his role?

I say the only guy that comes to mind is Milo Ventimiglia

Lol I know the vast majority of people here are males so I am waiting for a few to say Milo is just way too gay or smt like that, but seriously, his parts have been sort of the bad boy but good within type on tv, and then supernatural powers in Heroes. Sigh, unfortunatly I dont think he'd ever really accept. He's beyond someethinglike DBZ at this point. he is so perfect for the role tho, the eyes and the frame, (1.75 mt, against Chatwins 1.80). Who do you think would be good for this part?
