You're not trying to say people who buy the sets are aren't good/real fans are you? I'm not sure what you were implying by that comment. But you're way too smart of a guy to make lame childish comments like "You're not as good of a fan as me because you buy this product that isn't up to my standard". Hopefully I am just interpriting what you said incorrectly.
Yes, you're off the mark. Like, my point is in Canada and you're looking at Iraq
My point was, to be more precise, people were accusing me of "caring too much" or saying they didn't care because it was just a cartoon. I countered with the fact that we all belong to a DragonBall fan forum, hence we all care obviously. I said "differing levels" because...well, we
do care on differing levels. I don't mean in a superior/inferior way, just...different.
Make more sense? Jeez, had I known this was gonna become a powderkeg I wouldn't have posted it

How did this become another, Season Set Justification/vs Dragonbox thread again?
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Fandom is split like a brick at a Karate tournament right now because of them. They were bound to come up in a thread about the fandom's community.

I buy the season sets because:
1. It's the show I love, on DVD
2. It's affordable
3. I was one of those idiots who bought all the episodes on VHS when I was 13
4. Although the DVNR or whatever makes the picture "smoothed" it doesn't bother me all that much, except when it gets ridiculous (not that often).
5. The cropping is stupid, but whatever, so Cui's head got cropped in one scene for 2 seconds, I don't care.
Really, I just don't mind. I understand the problems but I know my one voice won't change it. And yes, I am the type of person who would buy the dragonboxes even though I only understand like 2% of japanese just because I love the show that much, but I can't fathom spending 600+ per box, well, not at movie theater manager pay.

Am I a little...err, preturbed by people buying the sets at all? Yes, I am honestly.
Why does it bother you that I'm buying them at all? I'd like the show on DVD and I don't know Japanese. So what should I be doing instead?

I thought I was pretty blatant about this, but very well:
They're horrible sets. Take away the cost, and what do you have that's honestly worthy of praise? The half-hearted half-redub? The sometimes-missing Japanese score? I guarantee if this was being released for a standard pricing point ($99 a set? More?), we wouldn't even have a conflict because people wouldn't be buying them in nearly the quanitity they are now. The only reason they sold is because they are cheap. And to be honest, if that's the only reason to buy something, there's plenty of cheaper routes to obtaining the series.
As for the alternative, and this would admittedly take the vast majority of people who buy DragonBall products, it would be to reject the sets and demand a better product. FUNimation themselves admitted they would do a better job if it was demanded...but it wasn't, so they didn't. That's admittedly beyond the scope of what even this community could do, so I'm not blaming people here. I'm venting about the DragonBall fanbase in general. If you take offense to it, then you must think something I said applies to you, which honestly isn't my fault.

I definitely wish people would have taken more of a stand and not just accepted these sets because they're cheap. That's a terrible reason and I think the saying "you get what you pay for" applies well here. It's cheap, because it's half-assed in a lot of ways. If they HAD to do wide-screen, there should have been a full-screen option as well, if they were going to do the dub with the Japanese music, they should have included ALL of the tracks, and finally, if they were going to redub, they should have done all of it instead of just some lines here and there. Like I said though, I understand why people would buy it and even I didn't have much of a choice when it came to collecting the first 3 seasons "uncut", I just wish it were done a lot better.

I had no problems with the Season One set I bought. I think the new dub has been great and I'm looking forward to getting seasons 2 and 3.
As I said earlier I would not have noticed the cropping if I had not been told about it.
I really do wonder why nobody mentioned Cha La Head Cha La being left out the English/JP bgm audio track. Thats the only thing that pissed me off with this set. But If I can learn to live with Love and Marriage taken off Married with Children sets. I can deal with this.

I'm surprised, my girlfriend definitely picked up on it quickly even though she never saw the episodes before that set. She actually pointed out most of the stuff that was cut out of the frame before I did.
And the Cha-La omission was pointed out with Season 1, as was the fact that they used the same copy of the end credits each time (Raditz lives on forever...or at least his credit from episode 1 does

). If they haven't fixed it still...then they're very lazy.

Raditz is gone from the credits after his death. Each episode only list the characters who appeared in it.
I should probaley note I have never really seen these episodes before. I got into the show during Androids/Cell. So I read the Saiyan Saga in the comics first. The cropping maybe more noticeable once I get to season four.

In terms of the fandom....I can't really say anything. The only real exposure I've had to the fandom has been through this website, and most people here seem to be insanely cool.
So far, I've managed to buy most of the Z movies and singles and all of GT for around £3 each on eBay. I've also bought all of DB and the TV specials courtesy of Madman. Price certainly isn't a problem, as I'm willing to wait until the last few that I need crop up on eBay.
As for the season sets. I haven't bought any of them, and most likely never will. However, I'm certainly not going to call anyone who buys them an idiot.
It's just frustrating that we'll never see season 1/2 in fullscreen because people are buying them.
Think of how many people on here supported FUNI by buying their releases over the years and helped them grow into the company they are today. Releasing the season sets in widescreen was like a big 'fuck you' to all those people who are now left with an incomplete collection. At the very least, FUNI owes it to those fans to release at least seasons 1 & 2 in fullscreen.

Oh, ok, good. Sorry to make a false accusation like that.

It's like I said before. We're getting a product worth what we're paying for. Consdering we lose 20% of the picture and we have those foaming at the mouth instances, I'd say $30-$35 is a good price.

Wide screen or not i don't really care but when people just rant about how stupid it is, I frankly don't care what people think. As long as I can watch the show without any edits I am happy. Dragon Ball fandom is dropping in numbers I am the only person out of my friends that still has interest in the show, people have their own opinion.

But if you think about it wide-screen is an edit because that's not the original aspect ratio.

Well I'm sure what he means by "un-edited" is more along the lines of "uncensored", with no digital edited to the drawings, etc.
But I always love reading everyones smartass attitudes on this forum so I won't say anymore.

People, it could be worse. They could have re-animated it themselves. Stop complaining, especially those of you that have those better Japanese releases. It doesn't matter to you, because you have your precious "perfect" Dragon Box sets. Me? I'm playing the waiting game, but watching this is getting annoying.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
