Freeware credit maker for avi, divx,&vob files
Is there a freeware editing software out there I can use to add credits to the end of clips in .avi, .divx, or .vob format and save the new file in the same format?

MPEG Video Wizard might work for you. I've never tried it myself, but I've heard good things about it.
VOB's are MPEG, MPEG-2 to be exact.
How about using your best friend and mine, Google
Oops, my bad. Though to be honest trialware is you're gonna get. Developers like to make money off of things that they work hard one, but meh.I also asked for Freeware not trialware.

If vob files are Mpeg-2 files, Then Why can't I play the mpeg-2 videos I use to watch on WinMediaPlayer??
I have Power DVD player so why don't they automatically show up as PowerDVD files or even vob??
I was able to play mpeg-2 files before I had PowerDVD. That came with the DVD burner I bought to replace the DVD-rom drive in my old PC.

They actually will play if you change the filenames to "(name).mpg"The-EDSEL wrote:If vob files are Mpeg-2 files, Then Why can't I play the mpeg-2 videos I use to watch on WinMediaPlayer??
Because I don't believe DVD player are just straight-up .VOB file players. They work through menus and cataloging systems on the DVD itself.I have Power DVD player so why don't they automatically show up as PowerDVD files or even vob??

That is that file name.
On this PC with xp-pro I don't see the file extension anymore. The old one did show them. (but that was xp-home)
I type it in but it does not show
each of the mpeg-2 videos now only show an icon with MPEG letters
My vob files do show up as MPEG files but the actual Mpeg files show up as Movie Clips only.
Would it help to go through 'Properties-plays with' & change to Power-DVD from WinMedia?

Open up an explorer window, open the tools menu, and click "File Options." Under the "View" tab, make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked.The-EDSEL wrote:That is that file name.

That's about as much help as I think I'm capable of being, sorry.

To get the file extensions just open up My Documents and go to Tools. Under Tools select Folder Options and from there hit the View tab. You should get something like this:The-EDSEL wrote:That is that file name.

That would work actually. It's how I configured PowerDVD on my computer. Do you have just the VOB files, or is it a full DVD that's on your HDD? If it's just the VOB's then rename them to MPG like Kaboom said. If you have the entire DVD (IFO's and BUP's and all that jazz) just follow this:The-EDSEL wrote:each of the mpeg-2 videos now only show an icon with MPEG letters

Find your VIDEO_TS folder and hit OK, your DVD should play as it does on a set-top DVD player.

Ok, Thanks for the one bit of help. I can now read the file extension for all files on both H-D's.
The Video clips that no longer play in WinMedia are .mp2 extension.
WinMedia is updated through at least v11.
I have No problem with the .vob files. They play fine in PowerDVD.
I don't need to change their name or Extension.
I did not create the .vob files, only downloaded them so I only have the .vob portion of the file collection.
All I wanted was a simple to use editor like WinMovieMaker that can not only Import .avi, .divx or .vob files, but save in the same file format. Preferably automatically saving in the original files format.
Please take into account, that I am still an Extreme Beginner with ALL things Personal Computer.
I don't mean to sound unfriendly or such. I just don't know enough to be able to do or ask for what I need or can use.
I was linked to jahshaka from another forum, but don't think I could save the download file as a '.tar.gz' file
I think my 'Alzip' will open the .tar, but have no idea what to even think about the .gz extra extension.
I was also given a sample copy of VideoEditMgic, but again am not sure about it as I have never heard of it before

I'm not familiar with any of the programs that you have listed, sorry. And I've never come across a .GZ file.
So no help from me there. Only thing I can tell you is that MP2 usually indicates an audio file, obviously similar to MP3. How about changing the extension of the MP2 files to M2V or even MPG? Maybe if you do they will once again play in WinMedia.
Sorry I haven't been much help.

You can't *add* something to a video file and then save it out to the exact same format without re-compressing it in some way. Sure, you could save an XviD to an XviD, but you're still going to have to re-compress it since you'll have added credits to the end. It just inherently does not work the way you think it does. If you just wanted to snip a portion of a clip out, then you would be able to do a "Direct Stream Copy" and not change anything about the makeup of the file, but you would not be able to add anything to it this way.
You're simply going to have to make some type of credits in whatever graphics/video program you choose, and then stitch them to the end that way, re-saving/re-compressing the whole thing out again in the end.

Remember here, I am an EXTREME Beginner with all of this.
I am sorry but I have little idea what you are trying to say.
Are you saying that there is No editing software that will save in the same format I import from?
Or do youthink I am trying to save the edited file as the original (replacing the original)??
WinMovieMaker does just what I am asking only in wmv format. I can clip a segment out, or take a clip & add end credits & save .
All I need is one that lets me import almost any video format,(but especially avi, divx, or vob) make my credits, then save in the Same format as the original imported file.
I thought I at least had been clear on that part.
If there is no such known editor, then just say so.
As for compression, isn't that the file format??
