Although at the same time, the guy's about 50. He certainly isn't an old man.
Pat Morita would've been an awesome Roshi. Unfortunately he passed away some time ago.
(Personally, the stupid fighting in this topic is making me want this movie even less, but best not to go that route).
EDIT: As for this Chow Yun Fat fellow, I oughta watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon again. It's been a few years since I've last watched it.

If he were still alive and in better health, I wonder if he would have done a movie like this. It's certainly possible.
And yeah, casting-wise it would've been perfect.

I agree with Xyex. Honestly, this thread would be a lot better if people would stop recycling the same "points" (read: baseless conjecture) over and over again. It seems everyone's restated their opinion at least thirteen times, and in multiple paragraphs each. There are some interesting standpoints present on both sides of this topic, but rather than maintaining a reasonably polite, intelligent debate, we're just going around in a circle of "I'm for the movie, and angry" "I'm against the movie, and angry," "Both of you guys shut up I can't take this anymore!". The good stuff, the stuff I actually care about reading, is getting lost in the sea of it all. Right now Kaboom and MisterFlashdude probably have the most of my attention, because they're some of the few actually making sound arguments.
Not really a fan of restriction, but maybe a thread with stricter guidelines would do better in place of the generic and prone-to-decay nature of this one (not that the OP wasn't a valid discussion, but this is shaping up to be the opposite).

I'm "anyone in general" and I don't appreciate you acting like I was making a big issue out of it. I stated a preference. That's it. You don't have to turn it into a fucking crime.
Exactly what I have in mind whenever somebody takes a stab at those who state their preference, in regards to the cast of this film.
*edit*
This just in! According to 'The Hollywood Reporter', Chow Yun Fat will be Master Roshi for the upcoming Dragonball film. Woot! Finally, something to look foreward to.
Nice way to try and turn it around. I brought the idea of more Asians in a Dragonball movie into the conversation, you said that people who were talking about it were making a "big deal" out of it, I call you out on that because I wasn't, and you try to make it look like I'm the asshole for it? What are you? A beggar from
Assassin's Creed?
You've made it a bigger deal than it is by simply trying to act as if you're somehow superior for not caring. I would've simply let the comment die if it weren't for you.
Thanks for making me out to be what looks like a self-racist asshole. I hope it helps you sleep at night.
Anywho, whoever gave me the title for "Forbidden Kingdom", thanks! I saw the trailer and read the premise. Looks like an interesting take on JttW.
As for this Dragonball movie, I'll be back in this thread (or whatever Dragonball movie thread exists) when there's a trailer and we have all new things to bitch about.

Kingpin is white in all the comic books, but in the Daredevil movie, he was African American. Guess what. No one threw a fit.
I did!
If Goku is just starting school in the movie, it ... urm... might work with his character with less potential for error?
I would be interested to know if anything we have has changed after James Wong's 'revising' of the script.

Well, I don't think Miyauchi was much older than that when he started playing Kamesennin.
Sedorna wrote:landoku wrote:No they already started filming in the mexico set. They move to the durango set on jan 2nd. There is also gonna be a set in L.A.
Forgive any ignorance I might have, but I thought the Durango was a part of Mexico, so the Durango set *was* the Mexico set. Kinda like the L.A. set is also the United States of America set.
Durango is also a city in Colorado (and possibly other places), but I do believe the filming's taking place in Durango, Mexico.
Yes, Durango, Mexico is where they'll be filming in January. But they appear to be filming in another part of Mexico at the moment. Probably Mexico City, which was previously mentioned as another shooting location for a few things they couldn't do in Durango.

Kids, kids, calm down.
Chow-Yung Fat is probably the best casting choice I've seen yet. I've gotta agree with the sentiment about a the big Kame-Sennin vs. Piccolo Daimao fight from the original arc ABSOLUTELY needing to be in there. They mention in that "character profile" article from forever ago that he eventually sacrifices his life to save his student, so I'd say it makes sense.

I'm hoping Chow Yun Fat can pull off both sides of Roshi's character. The wise martial arts mentor, and the lecher. I really hope they don't leave all the perverted things out. The idea of Chow Yun Fat being a dirty old man is kinda funny. Anyway, this is definitely the best bit of news on the film I've ever received and hell, I am actually sorta excited.

Oh, thanks for clarifying that for me! So, I guess this means that Goku probably does have brown hair.

There's a big difference between voicing a character in a cartoon and playing a character in a movie. As FUNimation will tell you, young people voice old characters all the time (not that it ever sounds that great though).
Even so, this is probably a good casting choice overall. Casting an older man might not've been the best idea anyway, especially if they want this to be a long-lasting franchise. The last thing you need is a character having to be recast in a sequel down the line because one of your cast members died of old age (which even happened with Roshi's original voice actor in Japan, come to think of it).

Um..I wasn't trying to make anybody look like an asshole or anything by bringing up that comment of yours. I was simply saying that I agreed with it, nothing else. So, what is with the big fit you just threw there?
On topic; it'll be interesting to see how Chow Yun Fat plays Roshi.

I think he can. He mostly plays serious roles, but he was pretty funny in Bulletproof Monk.
As someone who's impossible to please in reference to this movie, I approve. *thumbs up*

According to Hollywood Reporter. Chow Yun-Fat will be playing the role of Master Roshi in the upcoming Dragon Ball film. He will be one of maybe 2 or 3 asians in a mostly white film based on a mostly asian (and some animal) anime/manga series.
While HR has the scoop on this tidbit, I have even more info to share with you. I have heard from my sources that Chow's role will be a small part, almost a cameo it will be so short. Chow is currently hard at work filming what is being called "a top secret Honk Kong film that will revive the action genre". And I guarantee it isn't DB they are speaking of.
This source also claims that Roshi will most likely die in the film, as Chow didn't seem interested in doing sequels.
Chow has also lined up a Stranglehold feature film with legendary director John Woo, and is also planning a new film with even more legendary Yuen Woo Ping. It is speculated that he will be working on Yuen's "The Hands of Shang Chi", bu not in the title role.
Stay tuned for more on this as we get it!

I don't understand how Roshi's part could be small, that wouldn't make any sense.

Maybe it just means he doesn't show up til halfway through the movie.
On hiatus.
