Cussing and Swearing

Post by Izlude » Sat Jun 12, 2004 6:00 pm

Okay my question, in the original DragonBall series (manga+anime) is there really supposed to be a lot of use of naughty language, and is it ever so extreme to the point of the F word being used, that is if the japanese even have a word for it in their language. I remember back in the days of the old DBZ fansubs Goku would say fuck this get offuva my planet and Vegeta would say oh shit on you and fucking die, blah blah blah.

Are all the naughty words in the old fan-translations there to just make it look cool and our translations from Viz's manga and Funi's subs are much more accurate, or is the DB world originally just full of potty mouths, and professonial translators just dont wanna take the liberty of putting language like that into a cartoon? I personally cant imagine the characters in the DB series going as far has saying ass really, maybe with a shit one in a grand while.

I can garuantee you with the fact that Steve Simmons did the translations for Funi, their subs are more accurate. More accurate a lot of times than the VIZ manga in my opinion. I suspect you were watching fansubs done by AnimeLabs, that group was notorious for throwing in as many ridiculous colourful phrases as possible it seemed. Best one still being Vegita calling Gero I believe a "Candy-assed faggot".
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Yup that is the one! Good ol Anime Labs :) I believe they did a fansub of Rurouni Kenshin and added in tons of fucks to it too :)

I guess its good Funi has a great translator for the subtitle script then, cuz I heard some people at another forum which shall remain nameless complaining a bit at the lack of use of all the "cool dirty language"

Well then they're uninformed, clueless idiots I'm afraid. And Kenshin swearing? That's hilarious!! XD We're talking about a guy that's so polite he adds "lady" and "sir" to everybody's name! That's just too rich! XD

In the episode he battles Saitou in Anime Labs fansub, when Okubo comes in Kenshin speaks and the subs read - "No fucking way"

Then when he fights Aoshi, he tells him to cut the shit and wake up or something.... i cant really remember, it was many years ago ^^

The cream of the crop, just above or perhaps just under 'Candyass Faggot' is 'Fuck you, you blew up my fucking house, you fuck', or whatever exaggerated sentence he said in movie 13's fansub. :-P
"Chrysanthemums will wither together with its leaves, lying beside the fiery eyes soaked with blood. Even then, your sublime status will never be shaken, even if only half of your limbs will remain. To increase the fascination within the drama, should the search for a new partner begin? If so, then head to the east. You will definitely meet the one who is waiting for you."

In the sub I saw for #13, Vegeta said:
"You fucking bastard! How dare you destroy my house!"
Or something like that.

Is it really necessary to say "fuck" all the time though? While it may be the strongest swear word, do they really have to throw it in left right and center? I've heard that they never say fuck in the Japanise version, so the fan sub isn't exactly being accurate using it.

I know Caracal, I was making fun of the line, not excepting it. 'Cream of the crop' as in cream of the idiot crop.

Of course it isn't. It's being "cool". And being cool is much more important than being correct.

Although: "'fuck' is the strongest swear word"? Not where I come from, m'lado.

Yes in movie 12 Pikuhan did have to swear, but it was more like "bastard", "hell", and "damn".

Oh? I was under the impression it was the strongest swear word in the world.

Caracal, he's being sarcastic about cool being more important than correct. Unless you're using reverse sarcasm, which text sucks at getting across. :-P

I think fuck is one of the worst, but cunt is in my opinion the end all be all... especially depending on who you say it to. Go ahead, next time your GF/wife/whatever makes you REEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAALLY mad, try saying it. Silence will fall, and time will STAND STILL, as you can actually see and feel the evil emanating from her body as she stands silent, simply staring. Feel yourself shrink... because you are about to be crushed.

What led up to that incident? I haven't most of the movies as only a few have been released over here and Kazaa eats my computer

Yeah, if the word cunt is said in films it usually guarantees them and 18 certificate.

Well, interestingly enough, this scene takes place in the danish manga (and probably the german one too).

Chapter 486, as Super Buu is flying towards Mr. Satan, and is about to hit him.

Mr. Satan: ... Wha- Uh...what? He's gone! Ha ha! He was frightened of Mr. Satan! That spineless wuss! (or something along those lines. These expressions aren't always easy to translate) Ha Ha Ha!! *notices Super Buu is floating above him*
Mr Satan: Aah! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!!
Super Buu: ... ... Sa... ta... n... *flies away*
Mr. Satan: Buu is... ...my friend!

Ah, the Animelabs translation of movie #13 was my very first fansub. The memories....

The scene in movei 13 where Vegeta screams "fuck" is kinda near the end. The complete Hildegarn had just appeared and, in the process, destroyed Capsule Corp. This caused a very upset Vegeta to appear, try to fight Hildegarn, and get promptly beat shitless.
