Funimationn Now app and Dragonball movies
Hey guys! I downloaded funimation's app on ps4 and I was wondering if the dragonball movies were better quality than the dvds they released? If so I may watch em later.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

The story goes that the movies (or at least a portion of them) use Dragon Box footage. I cannot confirm or deny this, but I guess it would be super obvious upon viewing. I do know that for the later part of Z, they have the Dragon Box footage as well (though you have to select to watch the Japanese version or else you're subjected to the season Blu-ray footage).

Are the movies back in the app? They were removed a couple of months ago for "licensing reasons".

I just checked and the original dragonball movies are on there. You gotta be a subscriber to watch them though.jpranevich wrote:Are the movies back in the app? They were removed a couple of months ago for "licensing reasons".

At least in my region, only the four "OG" Dragon Ball films are on there. I just confirmed that DBZ movies are still unavailable.

It is true that the Z series uses Dragon Box footage for "Season 9" if you watch in Japanese, but that doesn't apply to the movies.
The OG DB movies use a HD master Funimation created several years ago. Unfortunately, movie 2's transfer was serverely borked, so you're better off with the original DVD single from 2005, but the other three are astounding. It's a very nice 4:3 transfer that's in HD. It's a real beauty.samuraix123 wrote:Hey guys! I downloaded funimation's app on ps4 and I was wondering if the dragonball movies were better quality than the dvds they released? The Z movies use Funi's HD masters, I believe, and... Actually, those are pretty good masters. Colours are more saturated than they should be, and the grain reduction is a bit too strong, but the detail level is very high, the visuals are very clear and sharp, and because these movies were produced to be seen in widescreen anyway(Well... In Z movies 1 and 2's case, it's more a case of they were framed to work in both, but 3 onwards was intended primarily for widescreen), it's all good.
And as an added bonus, unlike the Blu-Rays of these movies, if you're watching in Japanese, the Japanese title cards and such are used.
So, the FuniNow masters of the movies are A-OK, and aside from DB movie 2, better than the DVDs(Unless the DVD of movie 2 you mean is the newer one, which likely came in a boxset that includes Funi's 2009 redub of movie 1. In that case, the DVD is the same master as the FuniNow one, but downscaled to DVD resolution).
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.
