Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budou-den / The True Martial Arts Legend

Post by Gyt Kaliba » Fri Dec 28, 2007 4:47 pm

I was just reading up on some old DBZ games we never got here in America, when I found this.

http://www.kanzentai.com/guide/video_ga ... aturn.html

The second one from the bottom looks a lot like Ultimate Battle 22 for the Playstation. Is one a port of the other, or do they just look extraordinarily similar?

Shin Butoden was for the Sega Saturn. It basically just used UB22's sprites as far as the characters are concerned but the game returned to the old fashion Super Butoden game play.

Is apparently also the best of the 32-Bit, aside from "Legends", games.

It's actually Butoden, not Budoden.

And it has this awesome Mr. Satan Mode, where you make Satan interfere with a match with stuff like banana peels and a gun to rig the fight. I think the story of it had something to do with the money he owed 18.

As you can see, gameplay is a lot smoother than the slow-and-janky-as-fuck Ultimate Battle 22.

Unfortunately, I don't have time at the moment to sift through YouTube to find any more decent videos. Typing "Shin Butoden" comes up with almost nothing but MUGEN videos.

I thought it was Butoden, but I just typed it up how kanzentai had it on their site. I assumed them right rather than myself, cuz they seem like a fairly good site from what I've seen.

So it's more or less a Super Butoden game with UB22 graphics?

Yup that sounds just about right, only the special KI attacks are in Butoden fashion too and not those weak little fireballs you saw in UB22.

I think it's an ok game, much better than UB22, but not as good as Hyper Dimension or Super Butoden 2-3.

Mr. Satan mode is awesome however.

I just played this game ten minutes ago, and ... I can't say I've ever felt so completely handycapped at a fighting game. Of course, I haven't read the faq/movelist that I have in like five years...
... Is there a practice mode? I only have one Saturn handle and just want to test stuff. :(

Yes but the topic title is clearly the title on the website for the first set of pictures.

LOL, I honestly haven't played the game, and probably won't if they never do a Collections game here in the US (with a bunch of old, never-seen-in-America games on it). I just found it while cruising around kanzentai and thought it looked very similar to UB22.

Saying it's better than UB22 isn't saying much though. Sagas is better than UB22.

... I like UB22. XD. And I'm totally not saying that because I got the region1 version for Christmas and made my thumb bleed after only two hours of playing.
(I'll also say that when a visually impaired person points out how bad the graphics are, the graphics probably really suck.. Such is the case for UB22).

Shin Butoden loads much faster, seems to do better character-distinguishing stuff with character select and cutscenes, and plays much faster than UB22. The supers are in the super butoden style (though honestly, I think the sound quality in Shin Butoden 2 and 3 is better... which makes me sad... :( ). And it's got a bunch of crazy background effects ALA Hyper Dimention. And as I got my ass royally handed to me, I can't say anything else other than despite how similar the controls are to UB22, I still haven't pulled off any specials... :(

(Meep, I just noticed Kaliba's spacial proximity to me...)

Shin Butoden can be an awesome game if you're patient enough to learn the controls, which are a little trickier than in Ultimate Battle 22. I love the game. I've owned it for a few years now. And although I haven't spent much time on it recently, I've already played it enough (when I first got it) to know how awesome the game is. It's not the best 2D Dragon Ball fighter out there. But it is definitely up there with the best of the best: DBZ 2 Super Battle, Idainaru Goku Densetsu, Hyper Dimension and Super Butoden 2.
