Didn't they, in the FUNi anime, or Viz manga, remove Mr. Popo's red lips? I know one of them did.

EDIT -

It was the Viz manga, heh.

With Popo, knew some guys who got mad about his appearance and guys say that's why they prefer Mr. Sabat's voice for him over the Japanese. With Jynx, every Black person I know, myself included thought that lady was smoking crack.

This article gives a good explanation of it: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3151905

It's in response to a blog post about a video game, but it goes into a more general explanation of use of racial caricatures in Japan. I think it applies to Mr. Popo very well.

It's not like he's portrayed in some bad light. Now if we had a cartoon with a Mr. Popo type character who ran around blowing things up, then I'd understand. But Mr. Popo is far from a bad character.
Because in the USA, people find reason to be offended by ANYTHING and then yell as loudly as possible about it.
To be honest, I never heard of anyone protesting anything in Dragon Ball/Z/GT, so that could just be me, but I never even heard of that.

Sorta off topic but I always thought that some of Funimation's voices coupled with Toriyama's art style somewhat added fuel to some fires about racial stereotypes. Remember dub Namu? I was recently watching the 21st Budokai in Japanese and then I tried watching it dubbed again but then I heard Namu's voice and it sounded like some stereotypical Indian. That and after hearing it in Japanese his dub voice pretty much striped him down into a bad Indian caricature rather than a noble fighter IMO. I don't know about anybody else but I for one was offended more about Namu's dub voice coupled with his looks in the dub than I ever was at Mr. Popo in either Japanese or English.

On the topic. There are black characters in the Dragonball universe, none of them look like Mr. Popo. Toriyama's art style doesn't depict reality either. Last I checked White people/Japanese/whatever gray-race everybody is in Dragonball, don't look like Toriyama's characters. I, at least, don't see any reason to be offended, and I'm Black myself. Everybody else can think what they want but I don't see it at all.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.
